Mason Williams was the musical director of the Smothers Brothers show. Another great instrumental “A Taste of Honey “ by Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass

I loved Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass when I was young. I had "The Lonely Bull" which, iirc, was their first album. I suspect I first saw them on some US variety show like the Smothers Brothers who I knew because my sister owned their "Live at the Purple Onion" album. For those who don't know them, the Smothers Brothers were a comedy folk music duo who infamously ran afoul of, I want to say, CBS censors for a variety of reasons including to their opposition to the Vietnam War.

I saw Mason Williams a couple of times on the Smothers Brothers TV show. He sang another hit on the show, "Cinderella Rockefella", which is more of a nostalgic, corny song.

I was 7 years old. Mom was driving me to the Dairy Queen.
Mom had a 1964 Chevy Malibu SS convertible, and the top was down.
The radio station was KXOK-AM 630.
I heard this song, and fell in love with it.
It’s still in my top 5 favorite songs - and I’m 61 years old now.

This one is a joy to play on the guitar!! It's not the most difficult tune out there, but Tommy Emmanuel does an insane ramped-up-to-eleven version. Very epic and virtually unmatched, in it's fingerstyle guitar skills.

Love Mason Williams! That was the great thing about the 1960s and '70s-you never knew what you were going to hear on Top 40 radio. One minute you were listening to Motown; the next it was bubble gum pop; the next it was Southern rock; the next it was...this!
PS Mason Williams played "Silent Night" (which was originally composed for guitar in 1818) at my church one Christmas Eve. I was lucky to be in the church choir at the time and was only a few feet away. Magical!

The year this came out is of note, 1968...that year and the next couple of years after in pop music was infused almost universally with brass backings either in part or throughout the tracks. Rock tracks, pop tunes, even R&B had a brass bit or two accenting the piece. This had, obviously , a symphonic or orchestra backing but the brass fills tells me it is of that late 60s very early 70s time period, almost like a time stamp. This was a monster pop hit out of nowhere at that time and by an unknown artist-a real stroke of lightning for this guy. He never really matched it after that. I loved it then, still love it today. Thanks for stepping back for another good one. I don't think without those brass crescendos it becomes QUITE as big of a hit, but that's my speculation.

Hey Justin ~ Anyone who played the guitar in the late '60s and '70s HAD to know how to play this song. It was one of those "must haves" in your playing repertoire. I was completely enthralled with it when it first came out. It's such a beautiful and very flowing song. I remember working on this in '71 at the age of 12 when I finally got the sheet music for it. It's not a difficult piece, though like any music, it takes some practice to get it down. Check out the rest of that album. I think you'll like it. =)

Classic song - it was a big hit in its day. The album doesn't have any potential hits other than this one. It's more a collection of short sketchy songs. One of them, "Long Time Blues", is interesting in that the Beatles might have used a bit of it for "Maxwell's Silver Hammer". The album cover shows a book Mason published in 1967 called Bus. It doesn't have any pages, but instead is a poster folded out to the size of a Greyhound bus.

It was a big hit on the "mature" radio stations. It was a movie soundtrack sort of thing. It was basically something your parents listened to if they liked music, but still sort of square. It's better than Ray Conniff, Trini Lopez, 50 guitars, and some of the folky non-rock sort of thing, but sort of in the same genre, but still not as hip as Al Hirt's Java, or the surf stylings of the Ventures from the previous decade. Lots of people liked to play it on the guitar cuz it sounds more complex than it really is. A number of high school jazz bands would play it. The rest of the album -- no one pays any attention to it, but that's not uncommon for that era. Mason Williams was more or less a musical arranger, which is why this has a Hawaii 5-0 esque TV show sound to it. Harold Battiste, also an arranger for the wrecking crew would have layered a more "funky" or "jazz" element to it. It's a style thing. If you like the Hawaii 5-0 theme song, then you'd like Classical Gas. For me, it doesn't hold as much over time, yet it's a nice piece of music. In the timeframe of Classical Gas there was a "rediscovery" of earlier forms of music in popular music. The ragtime classic for the movie The Sting, which is essentially Scott Joplin's The Entertainer was released in 1970 is the perfect example along with a number of other takes and outright steals of classical music and folk music. (Eric Carmen's All by Myself and Simon and Garfunkel's Scarborough Fair are examples of outright thievery). In cultural US, Renaissance Fairs were popping up and rustic home decor was as well with mid-century modern going out of style.
Wrecking Crew had a lot of great artists. If you get to see the movie "Wrecking Crew" which was made by Tommy Tedesco's son Denny, do it. It's a window into corporate music of the 60s and 70s, and Capitol's dominance in the music field in that era. That doesn't mean that those musicians weren't great. They were. My favorite scene is Tommy Tedesco playing the same piece music over and over in a response to corporate asking for music that gives different ethnic "feel." The best takeaway from the movie for me personally was that "ah-a" moment when I finally figured out the connection between Glenn Campbell and Allen Toussaint (It's not in the movie -- I always wondered how Toussaint's unrecorded song "Southern Nights" ended up with Glenn Campbell -- I realized that because of the number of New Orleans musicians, and Harold Battiste were part of the stable of Capitol's essential musicians -- Plas Johnson, Earl Palmer, Dr. John, and others -- and Toussaint's success with Yes We Can Can with the Pointer Sisters allowed for that connection to be had with Glenn as a member of the crew. )

Watching your videos make me realize over and over again just how fortunate I was to have had all this diverse music be a part of my life. This song came out when I was 12 and I instantly took to it. Classical Gas came in at #43 in the Billboard top 100 songs of 1968 so I think it's safe to say it was a huge hit and it deserved it. BTW, there is this song from a guy who was in another band from the 60s, you might have heard of him, Pete Townsend, you should hear his song "Give Blood" from the White City album, you'll be happy you did... This tune was introduced to the world on the Smothers Brothers comedy show. It featured a montage of famous artworks flashing on the screen. It was one of the first music videos ever. It was an immediate hit. Many years ago I attended a "star party", an event where amateur astronomers spend several days and night observing the sky. I set up my telescope next to a guy named Ed who happened to be best friends with Mason Williams. Ed was a retired audio engineer who once worked in Muscle Shoals. Although he and Williams were friends, I don't think he did any engineering on Classical Gas. He said this tune was a filler piece. Williams had some blank space at the end of his latest recording. His manager wanted to fill the space. Mason had no new material though. His manager asked what he was doing for practice. Mason played the guitar part of the tune, telling his manager it was a ditty he composed to practice his classical technique. So, the tune was really an afterthought but it became William's biggest hit. It is a standout piece for Williams. The rest of his music is completely different.

This is always a good listen. Great guitar work with just the right amount of orchestration. I've watched people try to play this on guitar and fumble. I'm not a guitarist so I can't say for sure but it looks difficult. Great way to start off the day.

Mason also did a few sketches with the Smothers Brothers, perhaps written by Steve Martin or Rob Reiner. Our own americanized Bonzo Dog Band comic/musician. The 60's look better today than I remember them.

Another big instrumental from this same year is the theme to "Hawaii Five-O" - the opening of the original TV show was epic with the song synced up with Jack Lord's turn to the camera at the top of the Ilikai hotel in Honolulu. The Ventures had a hit single with the tune.

I have always really liked this song. It used to be played on the radio a lot. Classical Gas is not that difficult to play, if you're comfortable with fingerstyle picking. I figured out how to play it years ago. I did not know that the Wrecking Crew was on this. Interesting. I don't know if the rest of The Mason Williams Phonograph Record sounds like this, as I have never heard it. But years ago my girlfriend bought a Mason Williams album called Them Poems, and it is a cool record, and sounds nothing like Classical Gas. It is a collection of poems/songs done without musical accompaniment, just Mason Williams sort of rapping these short poems. We used to listen to it quite a bit and laugh cuz it's very funny. It is very cool if you like that sort of thing. It's like old time country/hillbilly sort of delivery. The poems all have names like Them Hog Liver Likers, Them Banjo Pickers, Them Beaver Cleavers. I believe Them Hog Liver Likers is on Spotify. You should check it out JP. It's a different side of Mason Williams.

Well this song by Mason has been a favourite across 3 generations of my family . We could say that it’s timeless .
Now symphonic / orchestral arrangements are not new in popular music and particularly prog .
So , without banging on too much , can I just say :
    Howard Werth and AUDIENCE -
Album :- The House on the Hill
Track :- Raviole where Howard takes the lead playing classical guitar ( as he does on all their tunes ) , with the London Symphony Orchestra . Another classically flavoured instrumental of great quality and an unexpected gem 👍

Nice enough little ditty, though it's lost some of it's impact on me having heard it about a trillion times... A very popular tune, and it's been covered by everyone and his dog, Including our Rick.

This was my favorite song for a long time, and the album was among mostly prog albums. While I listened to the other songs, none were as stand-out gorgeous as this American answer to Rodrigo...also worth reviewing along with Satie's stout Gnossiennes. There are some fun videos of Mason performing. Mr. Emmanuel also does a great version, as I recoil. One thing I have surmised over life is this: Those Williamses sure play a damn good guitar.

I've always liked this instrumental. I think it may have even been one of the few 45s I purchased way back in the day. It's just a cool little piece. Back in the AM radio days, I think the station I listened to would play this as filler until the news broadcast came in at the top of the hour.

I see it charted in UK in 68. I missed it then, but picked it up from a mate in the early 70s, and played it a lot. It was just a one hit single.I didn't know there was an album around. Great little instrumental, there were quite a few around at that time, quite a few from TV shows. Most of them were pretty good a guy called Johnny Pearson produced a lot of the UK ones. Great call.

That was a quality tune and all of sudden it made me realise that British guitarist Gordon Giltrap probably must have heard it and used it as an inspiration for his string of 70s album because they pretty much do the same thing, but arranged a little bit tighter / smoother, as Mason Williams does here. On Classical Gas the arrangement is basically based on what Mason Williams is playing, so the strings and the brass pretty much following his lead. Giltrap and his team did that a lot as well but did it, IMHO, a bit more sophisticated. Just check out this track from his Perilous Journey album (BTW, that has an ace rhythm section with John G. Perry on bass and Simon Philips on drums) th-cam.com/video/jkW0X62WPgA/w-d-xo.html

Justin picks another classic! Great choice - but I think I can trump you on that. Back in the mid-70s there was a brilliant guitarist here in the UK, who never got the respect he deserved, although he carved out a respectable career for himself. But one track in particular was his piece de resistance, and it towered over anything else he did subsequently - no matter what else he did that was brilliant, he could never equal the sparkle and fizz of the playing on this track.
So now, JP, I urge you, as a sequel if you like to Clsssical Gas, to check out another track in very much the same vein. The name is Gordon Giltrap, and the song is Heartsong. Again, it may have a certain ring of familiarity about it, as it was for several years used as the theme tune for a UK BBC travelogue programme called Holiday (followed by the number of the year, e.g. Hoilday 76, etc. - although you may well not have got that one over there).

Mason Williams premiered "Classical Gas" in 1968 on "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour", but it was accompanied by This Movie - 3000 years of Art in 3 minutes:
    th-cam.com/video/viyufRQKlto/w-d-xo.html
This appeared a 2nd time on The Smothers Brothers, It was a Smash Hit! He then formed it Live in other Shows. There is a video of him, with cutout musicians, where his is also playing (?) the other instruments.
The Original video has since been reconstructed with Fresh images of most of those artworks, and some slight alterations, here:
    th-cam.com/video/qOgjsuxTDx8/w-d-xo.html
The Music was not only a Hit, but the Movie itself inspired others to do similar things visually, I myself was recently inspired. See my "Two Hundred 2024 Memes in 40 seconds" - a visual rollercoaster.

Tommy Emmanuel, Australian, shows absurb guitar skills - a must to react. My other favorite guitar/songwriting/vocalist artist of the century is Chris Rea....can never under plug his greatness. I remember Clasical Gas was used in Cheaper By The Dozen (2003) and The Dish, a totally brilliant Australian Movie starring Sam Neil based on the Australian Satellite Dish used to transmit the moon landing pictures. Was also a term used by one fo the great composers who had severe flatulence.

It's got some really silly songs like The Prince's Panties and some quite beautiful songs like Here Am I, Wanderlove and Sunflower which might have the longest whistle intro in musical history. Now you're intrigued, aren't you? 😊

'The Wrecking Crew' is a bit of a misnomer. They did not exist as an entity as such. There exists no team photograph. The term began to be used as a catch-all of the numerous session musicians who at various times and in different combinations happened to appear on quality popular works by various artists.... Listening to this I guess that that's Hal Blaine on drums. Bass by someone else who was associated with the 'Wrecking Crew'. Otherwise, there's strings and brass arranged by Mike Post.
