    Your model came out fine! I am building it right now and have only one comments to your build: There is a slight misalignment of that largest decal (I am planning to cut into smaller, more manageable pieces) - it has to go properly around engine intakes on top side of the fuslage. Most likely requiring to cut that decal in the middle and extending it with paint.

    Excellent kit, great job with the decals, digital is always a hard camouflage to replicate. I think just a spray of flat would have given the plane a better finish instead of the glossy decal look but still a very great job well done. Cheers!

    At last I win a first to comment award. Yet again great build well done. For a kit that's probably rushed to production its a lot better than it could of been and all for a good cause

    Just to clarify a few things about this kit from reading the comments:
    -This is not reboxed Italeri. ICM copied the Italeri tooling and made some modifications to it: i.e the missiles and the MiG-29 9.13's fatter spine. Ukraine happens to use the 9.13 variant of the Mig-29. Incidentally, the Italeri kit represents a 9.12 which has a more slender spine.
    -This kit also was not rushed into production because of the war. It was originally released back in 2008 and was re-released under the 'Ghost of Kyiv' boxing during the war

    Nice job, Gary :)
    I got one of these when they finally released (having had it on pre-order for quite some time). Build wise for me it wasn't too bad. Just a bit finnicky, and nearly had a disaster with the instrument panel coming away from the cover after the fuselage halves were fitted together (think the whole tub shifted slightly, somehow). I planned to do mine in a flight configuration, which meant closing up the gear doors, opening the intakes and filling the upper louvres. Luckily I had a spare 1/72 scale X-Wing pilot from a Bandai kit that I remodelled into something appropriate looking. A fair bit of sanding and putty needed to get all the seams right. Did a small amount of modification on the exhaust nozzles (nearly went a bit wrong, oops).
    I'd gotten the Hataka Ukrainian set for it, and I was a bit fortunate I did. The decals were not a fun time for me. I'd been apprehensive since ICM decals in the past had fallen apart on me. These ones didn't fall apart, but they liked to fix themselves instantly, even with loads of water and a gloss coat. The big one crinkles and folded and was pretty much ruined, and I lost half of another at the rear. I had to painstakingly remove them, put them back on the backing paper, and then cut them out as templates for masking sheets, and paint each bit. Luckily the wings and fins didn't have quite the same amount of problem. Colour tones are a little off on the blue grey between the decal and the paint but its passable. After the other markings showed a similar tendency to stick instantly, except one of the numbers that went into the right spot first time and then at some point got bunched up by a thumb (requiring more painting to correct), I gave up on adding any of the tiny decals and just left it with the main markings. It has turned out better than I thought. I didn't actually need any setting solution on the decals as they sucked themselves down into the details. Quite a nice feature but at the same time, I'd prefer something that didn't so easily collapse in on itself and stick immediately.

      @garys_stuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kudos to you for painting the pixel camouflage!!! I didn't have any issues with shifting the decals round - that one over the spine took the best part of 20 minutes to sit to my satisfaction and I'm not sure it's in there 'right' place even now!

      Thanks - the quality of the kit has suffered a little, nothing like their recent OV-10 in 1/48 for example, but I think they are just cracking these out at a pace to bring in income. I'm sure the decals will fit, or can be adapted to, most other 1/72 MiG-29s.

    Great build Gary, and nice to see the digital decals went on so well. How good was the wing to fuselage join? It looked good in the video but was there much clean up and fettling involved?

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was all OK but you do have to make sure you sand the contact face of each surface - being a single part there is a mould line! But otherwise they went on surprisingly well. The only thing I'd go back and change would be the join between the fin and fuselage as there's a gap on my one, but I was in a hurry to get this done to schedule!

    'Little if any correlation' was a diplomatic way of saying, IMHO, naff all. Even upside down or on its side the decal sheet for the cockpit panel doesn't fit. In fact some of the shapes don't even exist.. the blue square top right for instance. Makes you wonder if it's the wrong panel and meant for a different aircraft.

      @garys_stuff  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I think I would. It isn'r crazy difficult - if it were an Airifx kit I'd say skill level 2. The only really tricky things are the decals for the digital camouflage but take your time and keep them wet and they'll go on OK. And use decals setting solution (like Microset or Decalfix) to help them settle in.

    I just got one of these recently, myself. Your tutorial was very informative; especially for camouflage decal application. (Though as I have modeled a few WW1 German aircraft in lozenge fabric decals over the years; this won't be my first rodeo.)
    As an aside, I thought that the cockpits of Soviet Aircraft were painted a pale blue/green, and a dark green was used for the landing gear wheels. Do you know if the Ukrainians repainted these parts during a renovation at some point?
    Thanks for posting this video, and Слава Україні!

    • @garys_stuff

      I believe that it was earlier aircraft that had that kind of faded emerald green interior and that more recent models have grey or black. I just followed ICM's call-outs and assumed they were right as they are Ukrainian!

      So a MiG-29 in pixel camouflage (which exists) is OK, but to add the story behind it and admitting it was made up isn't OK? The story existed, it was a thing of the time, it is instructive in the use of information and disinformation in war. Look at our history and see the rubbish we spouted during WW2 for home consumption, indeed during later conflicts as well. We all create our heroes or embellish the strengths of them from time to time.

    • @mmmmburgerz9442

      The kit is a tribute to the fighting spirit of the Ukrainian military. That’s as real as it gets. The actual military even stated it’s a moral figure. If we came under siege from the Russian empire there no doubt would be myths spreading as well. We can only hope Putin’s lack of common sense and embarrassingly disorganized military loses this war before to spreads further out. I personally would like to build the SU-27 I have in Ukrainian colors or even a tractor dragging a disabled tank out of spite of the Russian conquest.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tonyaughney8945 of course I do. Like so many similar tales. But in war time these things are created and they bring a morale boost to the populace. Or maybe you didn't read my reply to comments above. But MiG-29s in these colours did exist and still do. And they were, and are, flown by very brave pilots. So what vexes you appears to be the context.
      So in what way is a fictionalised character, around whom the service and spirit of all these pilots can be gathered, so wrong? Do you think that everyone on every side in every war tells the truth all the time? Do you think the people whose land has been invaded don't need something to focus their energies and thoughts when they otherwise feel useless to do anything about it?
      At the end of the day, build it or don't build it, I don't care. It's just a plastic kit. But please do me the courtesy of allowing that I might just know as much about these things as you do - maybe even more.
