Great review. Had to use my Generac GP8000 during the passing of Hurricane Eta. Loss power for 11 hours and ran fine with the ac, frig, 2 freezers, ceiling fans,, TV and lighting. Have it plugged into a junction box to main circuit breaker box which is convenient and nice. Also very fuel efficient to.

Hi Hank, these portable units can be a life saver. We went 16 days w/o power after hurricane IKE here in Houston. I had previously purchased an 8500 watt Briggs and Stratton portable from Lowes, had it set up to where I could back feed 220V AC into the house panel, we could run pretty much everything except central A/C . We ran a 20,000 BTU window unit A/C in the master bedroom and were comfortable. I have since installed a 20KW Generac with auto transfer switch that runs on natural gas and love it. Good review and good generator keep up the great work !

We had a really bad freeze last year where I live about 2 years ago. We were without power for 4 or 5 days and then had to deal with rolling blackouts. I have a covered open patio at the back of my house. Can you tell me if this generator would work on a covered patio during freezing weather to provide power to my home? Could you please also tell me more about how the generator would be connected to my home? Would I need a cold weather kit? Would I need to install a connection at my breaker box?
My family had no heat during the freeze we experienced. We resorted to running my car in the garage with the garage door raised a little to warm up. I really want a solution that will provide power if anything like this happens again. I'm disabled and have multiple health problems and a Senior in my home. I really feel like the freeze we experienced could be life threatening and I want to protect my family. I'm not sure if a portable or the whole home generator would be the best solution. I would very much appreciate any help you can give me in finding a solution. My home is about 1400 square feet and all my appliances are electric. I do have a solar system mounted on too of the patio I mentioned at the back of my house. I didn't even have firewood on hand for my fireplace and we had a very difficult time. There was pretty thick ice everywhere outside, the roads weren't driveable, and it was freezing in my home. If we hadn't gotten in and ran the car multiple times to keep warm, I'm honestly not sure we would have gotten through it. We had my dog covered with blankets on his bed in the garage. He wouldn't go when we attempted multiple times to take him out and wound up making a mess in the garage and became very ill. We made sure he had food and water but I felt very bad about it wishing I could do more to care for him. I have a portable heater in the garage but there was no way to use it. He was about 15 to 16 years old when it happened. We managed with the vet's help for him to recover but because he had very weak back legs and some other problems only had him for about a year after all this happened. I definitely don't ever want to be in this kind of situation again. Just awful.

I use non ethanol gas. I just cranked it like 3 days ago and she fired right up. I turn on the fuel from the petcock, crank it up, let it run a few minutes, then turn off fuel flow. The engine stops running once it's "out of gas" so to speak. Ive been really happy with this generator.

Good that u start it but u r better off to put a load on the generator, say a load half of
    rated continuous watts.

By running with a load, it keeps up the residual magnetic field you need to start generating some serious power. Sort of like old car generators, not alternators
which are externally excited by the battery but generators. They have the armature
from which power is taken and spins between two field poles with a slight magnetic field wound with thin magnet wire. a small d.c. voltage is at the commutator and
flows thru field coils allowing the field pole shoes to become quite strong. It is the
same here but reversed. A rotor with a small amt of magnetic field is spun inside the
stator, the rotor is wound with magnet wire and connected to the copper slip rings.
The slightly magnetized rotor makes a low voltage a.c. in an exciter winding in the
st8or core then fed in some cases to an AVR (automatic voltage regulator) or maybe
just a fullwave rectifier then to the brushes. The rotor now becomes highly magnetic
      and develops the 120/240 volts.
Brushless generators (alternators really) are a bit different but not too much.
There is an exciter winding in the stator hooked to a capacitor that can hold a bit
of electricity for a while. The rotor still has a light magnetic field on its poles and
has 2 sets of coils. one coil has a.c. voltage induced in it from the stator's exciter
winding. this a.c. is changed to d.c. by diodes on the rotor and the d.c. goes to a 2nd coil on the rotor, making said rotor more powerful. So that powerful magnetic rotor spins inside the stator.
When there is hardly any load, the stator is slightly magnetic, and not much energy is needed to spin the rotor. Put a heavy load on the generator though, and the
engine slows a bit due to the torque required because all the poles of the stator are
now like powerful magnets trying to grab the rotor.
Voltage is electrical equivalent of speed.
Amps are the electrical equivalent of torque.

If you ever lose the magnetic field you can usually get it back by plugging in an electric motor like a drill and spinning it by hand to charge the coils. Lots of videos how to do that on here.

They do get louder but it’s not earsplitting by any means.

I picked up a powerhorse 7250 watts running gen from Northerntool&equipment.
It got me an the wife thru Irma for ten dys. 16 hrs a day 120/240 volt 30 amps.
. The air filter is very important 4 good efficient running. My 91 Harley 1200 would
not do over 85 mph. I cleaned the air cleaner, went back out an rode, cops got me
for doing 110 over the Bayside bridge. Told him I was on no hurry, bike not running
good so I serviced the air filter, that old S&S teardrop style. he let me go cuz I was
doing bike main. but told me to keep the maint. inside the law. so yeah keep it clean
and never run an engine without the proper air filter.

Had this unit and it constantly caused me problems. The fuel gauge stopped working after a year and Generac only included hardware for one of the two feet needed to keep it level. The automatic/battery starter never worked. Ive had to replace the carburetor, the magneto and fuel filter all within the first few years. I had to disconnect a faulty CO sensor that would shut down the generator as well as a faulty low oil shut-off sensor that would shut down the engine regardless of oil level. Unlike any other generator Ive owned, valve adjustments where required once a year or more or it wouldn't start. And finally, for no apparent reason, the exhaust valve broke off after running for 45 minutes and ruined the head and piston. It was a let-down right out of the box and will certainly be the last Generac I ever spend money on.

If that was a Harbor freight model, they would call it a 10,000 model, since they use the surge rating for a model number. Generac needs to be more dishonest. Adding confusion they have 5 different 8000 versions, way to go marketing department!
