    Sam had run many a noisy model engine before. One day, while out hunting for a new Hornby engine in Hattons Model Shop, he came across something on one particular dusty shelf. It was a long-forgotten 2-6-2 Small Prairie Tank Engine of the GWR kind. A member of staff approached him from behind.
    "Why isn't the model in a box?" asked Sam curiously. "Surely every model on sale should be packed in one, wouldn't you agree?"
    "I would," answered the gentleman. "This engine did come in a box, but the flimsy cardboard fell apart." Sam wondered if he dared buy an un-boxed model engine, from a good-value-for-money shop. Of course, he'd already fallen for the model hook, line and sinker, yet was undecided as to whether he should have done so. The gentleman offered to let Sam buy the engine for £30. Sam agreed and purchased the engine with the money he had in his wallet. He hoped he wouldn't have any noisy troubles.
    Sam returned home with his model, and retreated into the loft. He removed the thin paper bag from around the engine, and placed his purchase on the track. Now for the moment of truth. He turned the power on and tested for good slow crawl forwards. The engine juddered into life, making an awful grinding noise as Sam moved her in reverse. He had the Small Prairie Tank Engine couple up to a short goods train, and she jerked herself off the rails. Sam put her back on.
    The 2-6-2 tank engine was a fairly good puller, although she suffered too much wheel-slip halfway up Gordon's Hill. Apart from that, she ran round the layout so noisily that poor Sam suffered a terrible earache afterwards. He took the model back to the shop and explained about his troubles with the engine. The gentleman listened sympathetically and happily gave his customer a full refund. Sam returned home still suffering an earache. The pain relented. Talk about the noisiest engine he'd ever had the misfortune to buy. Oh well, no use crying over spilt milk.

    The Gresley V2 is one of my favourite locomotives. I've been fortunate enough to see The Green Arrow up close at Shildon. Great review, great to see the V2 running on your track.

    As always a job well done. I have never owned a Bachmann loco, yes I know hard to believe, but may start paying a little extra for a better build quality as my last few Hornby purchases have been very disappointing. As a gift, I recently received the Hornby Tornado Pullman train set and have constant derailments, other loco's run fine, plus the detailing (what there is) is brittle to say the least. My loyalty to modern Hornby is being tested, but my love for Tri-ang and early Hornby is enduring. Keep the uploads coming Sam.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Caius Martius Thanks very much... I feel exactly the same - every one of my recent Hornby purchases has been disappointing in one way or another: gauging issues, poor build quality, cracks, glue marks, missing detail, broken detail and cheap motors! I'll always love tri-ang models, but just like you, I can't justify buying Hornby locos any more!
      Bachmann are only slightly more expensive, but their quality is FAR superior to Hornby!
      Cheers mate,
      Sam :)

    Nice review, Sam, real photos and brief history. The boiler does remind me of Flying Scotsman. It's great we can celebrate the work of Gresley all these years on.

      +janiceandcliff Thanks a lot Cliff, I agree that they do look very similar to the flying Scotsman (I even once mistook the V2 at York for and A3 hehe) And yeah, I'm sure he'd be glad to know that his work still lives on :)

    This is probably the only 2-6-2 tender locomotive in the UK besides 2-6-2 tank engines or 2-6-2 locomotives in the USA. We don't get a lot of 2-6-2 tender locomotives in the UK.

    Good review Sam . I think 7/10 pretty fair score. The latest versions of V2 have a better chassis, getting rid of the split chassis arrangement and Bachmann are bringing out a new version with a better body. The banjo dome on this version is too flat and not prominent enough. Only issue will be the price when the new model eventually arrives

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Russell Benton Thanks a lot, and I agree, the new model should be fantastic! Yeah, the price may well be an issue - but I suppose you get what you pay for, unlike with Hornby ;)

    I have one of this split frame type which I have fitted a dcc chip. Works fairly well, but no comparison to the later 'hybrid' new chassis same bodywork V2. I'm looking forward to Bachmann's completely new models. You have to just love the V2.
    ps. I love your reviews.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +William Glover Thanks very much for the kind words - the later Bachmann locos are definitely superior, but I still find these split-chassis models to be good smooth runners! I bet you had fun fitting a chip into one though ;)

    • @TheWGLOVER

      +Sam'sTrains It was quite a task, but unlike other split frame locos, I was able to fit the decoder (Hattons) in the loco.

    Great review, and of something interesting : a vintage model, and a good one !
    There is something to do with such nice engines : do modelling with only second-hand engines from the '70s to the '90, for instance. It's also one other of my ideas about modelling trains, I might do something like that someday.
    One idea for you : why not made someday a review of model trains brands gone but not forgotten, like Triang, Mainline, Wrenn, with some iconic engines from those manufacturers as an example of what they have done in the past ?
    It would be not surprising to you if I tell you that I am expecting the new one by Bachmann which would be out in november this year, with an RRP of GBP 220 (no, there is no error from me)...
    Anyway, I'll be there for your next review of a vintage model like this one. Good job done, keep the momentum !

    What if hornby/bachmann use soft flexible rubber for super detail parts of locos that would be much safer than breaking it

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I guess that'd work - though it may be difficult to get such detail into rubber, and I don't know how long it'd last!

    Another lovely video sam, I have a more modern bachmann V2, im currently in the lining out stages as ive repainted it into LNER green as Green Arrow and improved detail with some hornby A3 parts, but as I said lovely video mate, they are lovely locos, directly sized down from the A3s and a true master piece of locomotive design :)

    These can look and run ok but Bachmann split chassis locos are a total gamble. NOS ones, in particular, often break their axle muffs on the very first run. I haven't been able to find replacement parts that really fit; the ones Bachmann sent me were hopelessly loose and the 3D printed ones I tried were very brittle. Best avoided altogether.
