How much padding does it have on the front and back of the bag, would it survive a hard knock if anything came into contact form either side, i dont know if i should buy this or the hardshell type bag they also sell.

No issues with typical accessories pressing against the laptop. There is obviously a limit to what you can put in here but it’s been working well for me.

My first observation, Tomtoc does make some nice ones that top load as well
