  • This film was made up of several short video clips from various CF promotional and safety VHS tape videos that my friend had collected while working briefly at CF. Most of the clips were very short and nearly all of them were used to make this film. I had to transfer those videos onto my computer and then try to make something out of them. Anyway for those who had worked at CF, or fans like me who just wanted to see some images of the Red, White, and Green running again here you go.
    Music:
    Artist: Vincent Bernay
    Song: Road Trip
    PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL IF YOU LEAVE ANY COMMENTS OR I WILL REMOVE THEM. Thanks.
    NOTE, IF THE VIDEO IS LOCKING UP, you can try hovering your mouse over the video, select the setting icon (machine gear), select quality, and try 1080p if you aren't already there. It may make it play through, thanks.

    CORN FLAKES! My earliest memories are of my grandfather driving these. Sometimes he would stop in our town and meet us for lunch and I would get to sit in the drivers seat as he would press the accelerator down with his hand. That beast was loud and for sure was a "shaker" He drove out of Richfield, Ohio. His last route was the Indy turn. He retired in 1979. He passed in 2010. He adopted me in 1971. I was raised by him and he is easily the greatest man I have ever known. 10-4 Cautious Coyote. You are forever in my memories Gramps!

    When I started at CF in 1984 at the age of 24, I was the youngest guy in our 7-man barn by at least 10 years. I really wish I would have had the foresight to get a picture of the 7 of us when I was a rookie. It would be a cherished possession to this day.

    Worked for CF for 25 years in Great Falls Mt. Starting 1975. We used to cross dock Canadian freight here. 6 linehaul drivers would make 2 trips to the Canadian border at Sweetgrass Montana everyday. The best job I ever had. Worked for Yellow after CF shutdown until I retired in 2014.

    I grew up around consolidated freight way!! My grandfather had 35 years of service. He retired back in 1994. I have so much CF collectible stuff it’s unbelievable. I even have a sign from a pup trailer. I’ve been driving myself for 18 years now. I run the roads for Saia motor freight. My grandfather had an excellent retirement from consolidated freightways! He passed away in 2012. I used to ride around the yard in a CF truck with him as a little boy. Im very fortunate to have a lot of memories from him and his days at CF!

    I rode in one of these old freight Shaker’s as my grandfather called them! I have ALL of his CF stuff still to this day! Huge CF signs jackets hats gloves pins you name it! Thats what 35 years will get you! He Retired back in 1994. And got to enjoy 18 years of retirement before passing away! I’ve been driving 18 years myself now! I drive for SAIA. It’s a Great job! I followed him in his footsteps! He always told me get your CDL keep it clean and you’ll always have a job! I remember riding around the CF yard in the old school conventional! Keep trucking!!! I know I still am!!!

      Must have been cool trucking back then. So the doubles and triples were for linehaul. You guys didn't use 40,45,48 or 53s back then for city work or exclusively pups?

    • @JethroScarecrow
      @JethroScarecrow 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@invnine5140 We would use whatever was needed, but the longest trailers we had in the CF fleet at the end were 48 footers. We all drove single pups, double pups or the 48 footers. Can't believe it's been 19 years since they ran the company into the ground. What a shame.

    I remember seeing CF trucks everywhere as a kid in the mid-nineties. I always called them "toothpaste trucks"; their logo looked a little like the Colgate-Palmolive "CP" logo to me, and the red and green stripes looked like Aquafresh 😂. I never knew they went out of business as I was only 14 and didn't pay attention to such things at the time, but I did realize once a number of years later that I hadn't seen any toothpaste trucks in awhile. By the time I learned what happened, CF was long gone.

    My dad drove for a smaller truck line, Knaus Trucklines, that was absorbed by CF in the late 50s. He drove sleepers out of Kansas City mainly to the west coast and east on a run that was called "around the horn" - KC to Indianapolis to Chicago, back to KC. The Freightliners were cramped and slow. They weren't air conditioned at first. Mom told me later that when dispatch called him in the middle of the night for a west coast run he would go into the bathroom and throw up. We kids were blissfully unaware of that as we enjoyed the comfortable middle-class life Dad provided. Still Dad loved driving and I loved the stories he and the other drivers would tell when I went down to the terminal with him, or we gathered for a cookout.

Best group of people to work with , after they went under , went to yellow ( yrc ) , then retired with abf , couldn't believe after working for those other companys, c.f. went under, they had more freight ,and better people than any of the others . Great times at C.F. !!!!!

    I told several CF drivers at the San Bernardino rail yard (X16) the week CF closed down, to get their butts over here at Roadway. Most drivers chuckled and said CF will outlast Big R, wasn't too many days later over at CF Mira Loma the news broke. Roadway picked up quite a few CF drivers, GREAT drivers and many became good friends.

    • @HerbertAtkinson
      @HerbertAtkinson ปีที่แล้ว

      And now? Yellow/yrc that bought out roadway, new pen, Holland as others now they are bankrupt, it's CF all over again & I wouldn't of wanted to be surprised as them who worked at CF & Yellow/yrc don't have a job anymore, many had lost out on their pensions their jobs under the new contract back in 2009 loosing the golden 80 & out replaced by retiring age of 65 regardless of years person has in had to wait till 65 to retire & taking 15% cut in wages was a disaster waiting to happen... later on not long back another contract came up that guys would get back some of their wages a whole dollar? Lol... & now the company is a goner like cf, goes to show that NO job is guaranteed union or not if company wants to pull the plug they will do it & NO UNION is going to stop it from happening..

    Superb job on the video Steven. Hard to believe we're coming up on 16 years since they pulled the plug on us. Still stunned at the way it went down.
    My favorite part of the vid is at the 3:30 mark when CF One pulls onto the lot behind an escort vehicle. I was fortunate enough to drive that rig in the early to mid-90's when it came to our terminal.
    I'd also like to compliment your choice of music to accompany the video. Couldn't imagine a better tune to view this by. Thanks for taking the time to put this together for us.

      Thank you for the comments. I know when putting this together I was sort of trying to coordinate the video clips with the music as best as possible (didn't always work). Also thought it would be nice to see scenes of trucks driving down the road as opposed to just still images (not that there is anything wrong with that). I'm just lucky that a friend of mine snagged a bunch of old CF VHS tapes back then before they were thrown away, and that he let me borrow them to make this.

    Great video, Steven! Where did you get all these classic CF film clips from? Canadian Freightways was still using this same CF logo when I drove my semi through Calgary, Alberta, Canada, about 5 years ago with my former carrier Con-way Truckload--which itself was, ironically, an offshoot of Consolidated Freightways.
    Off course, Con-way no longer exists, as it was gobbled up by XPO Logistics, which later spun off Con-way's truckload division to the Canadian mega carrier Transforce. Transforce renamed this American truckload acquisition as CFI, apparently in homage to the truckload company's pre-Con-Way days. (Years ago when Con-way decided to augment its LTL business with a truckload operation, it searched for and found an established truckload carrier to buy by the name of Contract Freighters, Inc., or CFI for short.)
    Boy am I glad that I got away from all that mergers and acquisitions mess, and now work for Shaffer Trucking. Life is much better here.

      Hi Tom. A good friend of mine had collected about half a dozen safety, promotional, and year-end CF VHS tapes from his short time driving with CF. I basically had to upload it onto my computer (and using all tapes) pick out all the short little clips of trucks that were within those films. Then try to arrange them in some sort of order that hopefully would be interesting. I had tried to sync the images with the song as really most clips weren't any longer than the beat of the song anyways. I basically exhausted all the available clips to make this film. So enjoy what's there....as there isn't much else.

      Wedge Brakes SUCKED !!! I drove for CF's little brother, Conway, for 9 years. I was told " Wedge Brakes are stronger than S - Cam, with two cylinders & actuators ( wedges ) per brake assembly. " Yea - and they could only be 1/16th inch out of adjustment before being red tagged at a scale inspection !!! Also, wedge brakes had to be completely disassembled and all parts cleaned before LEGAL reassembly, but few mechanics did that - just slap in new shoes and It's HAPPY TRAILS. Another problem with wedge brakes : If you blew an inside tire at speed, the flailing rubber was certain to take out the air lines on at least one cylinder, if not both. They you're " AN Inroute Breakdown. Terrific...

    Just out of curiosity, why did they go bankrupt in the first place? Was it because of the union or was it because their customers weren’t paying the bills?

      Labor costs, maintenance and fuel costs of a huge fleet, deregulation, changing customer needs, and mismanagement all go into that stew.

      Both were large companies, however which was bigger I can't really say for certain. Keep in mind both companies covered several decades of operation, and as far as where they ranked for any given year I'm sure fluctuated some. I suspect somewhere there is a historical record that ranked LTL trucking companies over the years. Thanks for watching.
