    In process of doing this...thank you so much for the upload. I encountered a confounding variable; dealership installed ford performance short throw shifter, so there are no clips between the boot and the collar just 3 hex key screws. And I guess while they were messing with the bezel/boot assembly they messed it up (plastic bit that clips are attached to was broken away from the rest of it, pissed me off to see that, I just used IC glue to fix it). I got the boot off fine everything going well. Another problem was no heat gun, and hair drier wasn't doing squat, so I had to hold a lighter up to the heat shrink to get it to shrink. That actually worked fine. Then the auto shop had no 3m window weld, so I bought silicon instead. With a fine nozzle I filled the shift collar housing with a layer of silicon. That's where I am, waiting for the silicon to cure..Pretty fun little weekend project, thanks again.

    One of the more annoying complaints about the car is this shifter rattle. Dealer tried to address the issue with no success. Followed this process and solved the issue. Heat gun is a must and take your time. Thanks for the video! Now if I can just get the trans cooler installed to solve the limp mode issue I'll be golden. Thanks!

    I just followed your reccommendations thank you. One thing I would suggest for all is to get as thin of a and close to shifter size as possible sleeve for it. The first I got made it to thick and I got new from autozone heat shrink pack the large blue worked great as sleeve. The first one was black and to thick. Couldn't put car in reverse and would not recoil. So the most important part here is the sleeve to be thin enough . But happy now no.more noice. Ty for info. Valhalla Ford man

    Dude thank you for this! First result to an annoying problem on my '17. Going to go do this right now. Really appreciate it.
    Follow up: So if you're going to do this, be SURE and use soft-grip vice grips. I didn't need them to get the knob off, but to get it back on and straightened is impossible by hand. I made the mistake of trying vice-grips wrapped in a towel. They tightened it, but fucked up the shift knob. Do not try that. Otherwise this works great.

    • @cmschleich
      @cmschleich 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ian dang, I read your comment, appreciated it, and figured I’d come up with a better jury rig. Nope. Buy those soft pliers. I think the key is the distribute the torque over their whole surface area. I tried with cardboard and microfiber and still messed it up a bit. Luckily I stopped and had your comment in mind.

    • @iancole85
      @iancole85 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it helped a little bit. The serrations on the jaws of a normal vice grip are just too much for the soft leather of the shift knob.

    I've got a 2021 Mach 1 and a couple annoying rattles going on... The first is a more mechanical/metallic rattle that I typically hear only in 1st and 2nd gear that sounds like it's coming from under the front of the car. The other is typically in 2nd to 4th hear and right around 2000 rpm. Wondering if it's the shifter. It sounds like it's more from the dash, but I've tried adding some padding a few places in the main dash trim piece and no dice. Maybe could be one of the metal brackets on one of the vents I spose.
    Not sure if I've run into the shift rattle at this stage, it is the same Tremec as the GT350

    I have a 21 GT. Driving between 28 - 33mph I get noise like a rotating rattle or just a rattle i'm bad at this, I thought it was coming from the shifter but then I opened my center console and the noise got louder and sounds more like it's coming from there. Any ideas ? still makes the noise if I put in neutral at those those speeds. The shifter stills makes other kind of noises because i can touch the part of the shifter where the spring is and i can make the vibrating noise louder or quieter. I'm in new york. Do you have a shop ? Brought it to ford before I realized the noise gets louder with the center console open and of course they didnt hear anything. Any help is appreciated. I'm one of those people that hate noise where it shouldn't be and it's been turning me off to the car, like almost regretting the purchase.

    I just dropped my 2016 GT350 off at the Ford dealer for a noise. I don't know if it's the noise you describe here or not. But I only hear the noise when I'm driving and partially depress the gas pedal. If I put the pedal all the way down or nearly all the way down, the noise goes away. It sounds like rocks in a can to me. Very annoying. And I swear it's coming from the engine bay. What do you think?

  • @cmschleich
    @cmschleich 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just did it. Buy the soft pliers, even if you never use them again. Most jury rigs with a wrench and intermediate material will end up concentrating the torque to a few contact points on the shift knob. It takes a lot of force to get the knob back on all the way. I stopped with my jury rig (wrench, cardboard strip to distribute force, microfiber) before I really messed it up.

    My 19 just started this noise out of no where when shifting from 1-2 at above around 4K. Sounds like a whirring noise. Almost like a top being spun. I just changed the transmission fluid at 9k with amsoil and the noise has pretty much disappeared but I think I can still hear faintly. It only occurred during the shift. There isn’t any noise while in gear and the tranny doesn’t feel bad in any gear.

    Got a used 2017 GT350 2 days ago after owning a 2016 GT. Great car, I’m rather quickly getting overwhelmed with mechanical noises transferring to cabin (transmission noise/vibration, engine vibration into dash). Sitting in passenger seat with wife driving put me over edge. 2nd and 3rd gear driving are ear murder. I will likely do this repair, but mine seems like there’s more noise than just that, do you have any other recommendations/experience about sound deadening areas around the center console and shifter area? Videos are great, clearly a lot of detail put into them. I’m definitely buying a heat gun, if I see an associates link I’ll buy it.

    • @autofanaticcars
      @autofanaticcars  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Schleich hi all links are above, also buy the sound proof mat i show in my other videos for dash rattle, remove the top plastic center console and apply to the underside of the plastic, makes a huge diff in noise reduction. most of the noise is coming from the spring and pull up collar and if your in an area with winter cold temps the noises just get worse this time of year but with some patience you can work through them all.

      forget the pin, drill out the hole, tap it with a 6/32 and use a set screw instead it keeps the spring in better position and less chance of a rattle. if you want to get a pin go visit a local R/C Hobby Shop those style pins are used for the hubs for wheels and gears FYI.
