I thought it was stupid and was so frustrated with the series from that point on that I didn’t even remember finishing the first season. In all media I consume, follow a 10-15% rule where I drop stuff if it hasn't gotten good after that around 10% mark. Generally speaking, the groundwork is done by then and the first proper arc is probably happening or almost done. It's long enough to judge the story, the writing and in the case of manga, the art as well. I spent enough time trying to force myself through books that just weren't for me that now I'm really quick to drop things that don't appeal to me immediately.
    Sad to say, One Piece was one of those. I actually somewhat vibed with the first few chapters, but eventually I just had to drop it after volume 10. I'm willing to give it another go at some point later on, but I'm not very hopeful. But man do I feel like I'm missing out.

    • @spacedog644

    When I was in high school, my school had both Naruto and Bleach. I could check out four books at a time, so I decided I would do two of each and see which one I stuck with. I put bleach down in favor of Naruto, and Naruto became my ride or die for the rest of HS. On a similar note, I was trying to get into Attack on titan when the anime first came out. Watched most of season one, and got over it. Now I have the whole manga, have read it all the way through, and will gladly read it again.
    I feel like part of what makes us decide a series is good or not, or when it gets good, is just based on who we are at the time. High school me needed to see Naruto figure himself out and get Sasuke back home; Adult me can see all the real world parallels and ideals in Attack on Titan. /Both series are good/, they just hit different at different times, ya'know?

    The reason why these manga are all over the place with arcs, not including Berserk that had its own set of problems, is they are Shonen Jump manga and they are subject to the whims of surveys. If you read Bakuman, done by the same pair as Deathnote, they explain in full detail.

    This is me with the Gintama anime. I've struggled over 10 years to get into it but always drop it a few episodes in. Stores never sold the manga around here so I have no idea how it compares at the start.

    • @spacedog644
      @spacedog644  ปีที่แล้ว

      Gintama’s my favorite anime but I get how people could struggle with it. The humor doesn’t find its footing until around episode 25 after the main cast is introduced, and the story doesn’t get going until episode 60-ish with the first serious arc, so if you’re not liking it at the beginning I don’t know if it’s worth watching all those episodes to see if you’d maybe like it later.

      Gintama is the kind of series that just isn’t for some people. It’s a series I dropped early on the first time I watched it and grew to like more as I got older.
      Anyone watching I think should skip to episode 3 since the first two episodes throw too much at you and it could put you off. On my second watch though I found the series to be good right from the start despite not taking to it the first time.

    Here’s what happens. Shonen Jump is written for little kids in grade school. It’s like asking what are your favorite Lunchables are.
    And anyone who says a super longass series is good all the way through, 99% chance they are lying and their tongue is purple or green from the koolaid they drank. Mangaka are humans. They are creative. They get into ruts and unlike writing novels like say JK Rowling, they don’t get to take breaks. Many famous mangaka have this issue, including Miura, where they get tired of working in the same thing. But leaving a selling title is a huge deal in manga. So you’ll see some less famous mini series by these guys but then they go right back to doing Berserk and struggling with it. This is especially true with Shonen Jump and their surveys.
    The only ones that are great/maintain quality throughout are often seinen series. For example Lone Wolf And Cub is a masterwork throughout and reads like the mangakas had EVERYTHING plotted out like Watchmen and simply executed immaculately.

    • @spacedog644
      @spacedog644  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it’s hard to maintain anything resembling a consistent level of quality when you have to come out with a new chapter every week for several years.

    What a manga collection, so many good manga on there, and yes, it's 2023 and people should read/watch Katekyo Hitman Reborn. I liked the earlier parts too, I understood that it was a build up part of the story where they introduces all the core members of the series, and it was fun. People just need to have a little bit more patience.
    One Piece is also good for me from the very beginning. I don't like people who say "it gets good at point x, y, z", because if you don't like it from the beginning, it's probably not for you at the moment.
    You forgot to talk about Gintama, it's another series where a lot of fans couldn't really get into it because of the comedic nature of the series. It took about 55 episodes in the anime to get to the first "serious" arc of Gintama. Whether it's fair or not, the serious arcs I think are the ones that leave lasting impressions on most fans, compared to the episodic ones, even though the serious arcs aren't just what Gintama is all about.

    Everytime I read a comment about black clover, these said it's the "shonen ever", "way better than the Big3, Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia etc", and becomes good later. I tried it, watched 52 episodes and nothing happened, it didn't have 1 memorable moment, good fight. Usually if a series not good, I just drop it. But because black clover was way too overhyped, became a huge disappointment and makes me hate it. First I thought the problem is me, but after I dropped it, I started Bleach and it not was just good, it made me remember why I love anime, what I felt when I first watched anime, it had everything what I love in anime. Sometimes recommending and overhyping a series makes the opposite effect in the end.
