Because it is, now it's just a contest of who can make Dana White more money and finding/feeding the next Connor Mcgregor wannabe that never reaches his ankles because there will never be a superstar like him again. It's not about who is the best of the best anymore.
Chael’s popularity doesn’t have cult like roots though I bet was their final point. He got his fans while fighting under big promotions in big fights specifically that Silva fight he popped for. But only a few fights before he didn’t have the trash talk gimmick. If you go back he was still saying in interviews how scared he was and was super cordial in build ups. He wasn’t popular when Maia triangled him and by the time he left he fought for a ufc belt 3x. By then he was marketed. Contrast that with like someone who I’m sure they’ll rank as #1 or up there in Nick Diaz. Was popular before and after he slept Lawler. Only compounded when he went to lesser promotions but ppl followed and watched him hit a gogo on gomi. He’s not my cup of tea but I get it
Going from a nobody with the reputation of being a quitter, to quite possibly the most universally beloved man on the roster is an insane transformation. I hope he manages to get another title run one day, cause that 11 fight win streak was the stuff of legend.
I watched back in the hayday of jose aldo. He was always very underappreciated and overshadowed by silva and barao. I didnt notice him start getting his due mainstream respect until he was old and at BW
Tank was what we expected fighters to be when MMA was first entering into sports. We know now that guys like that don't usually make it that far, but that was the avatar of what everyone thought the best fighters would be.
Man, Bas was one of the reasons I became a hardcore fan after years of just kinda watching cards whenever I could catch them. I remember going through the entire Rutten and Ranallo podcast library, even episodes older than when I'd started religiously keeping up with the sport, just because I loved their dynamic so much. I'll never understand how not one of the big promotions have him around as an analyst or commentator. He's easily one of the most charismatic and well-spoken guys in the business.
I think a lot of the popularity for Bas is his personality, he always had a ton of fun commentating, he seems to be a genuine guy that everyone likes, and he's extremely intelligent when it comes to the tactical aspect of fighting.
No Tony Ferguson? No Cowboy Cerrone? No Royce Gracie or Ken Shamrock? No Tank Abbott? No Anderson Silva? Fedor and Khabib? And NO GSP??? The fans would march thru the gates of Hell for these fighters.
The cult part leads me to believe most prominent champions weren't going to be on here, but yeah many would still be considered cult heroes in general.
Bas Rutten was a legend before the internet. I remember hearing/talking about him in gyms in London. Legends that had left the comfort of their European homes to train hard, in the wide world.
For me it will always be Andrei Arlovski. I somehow was watching some mma at someone’s house not really caring and then he walked out with his fang mouthpiece and I’ve been watching/following mma ever since.
The opposite of something being _cult_ is being mainstream. It makes it difficult to believe someone has a cult following if they have had a hugely popular TV show.
Something that I really like about Patty is that his dedication is underrated. Yeah his hype might be deserved or not deserved, but regardless of it, he always seems to improve and learn , He learned to be a little more humble after the Gordon fight, but is destruction of Tony and Bobby Show that he is massively improved
Love that you boys gave NBK some love. He was seriously so underrated. The guy was so close to dethroning GSP with that head kick. Such a savage in his prime. Great list all around
21:16 so the pro wrestling fans might get it, but to everyone else they'll only know Minoru Suzuki from Pancrase. He's had a CRAZY late career run since about 2016 in New Japan Pro Wrestling, NOAH and even in the US where people like to call him "Murder Grandpa". Thing about Suzuki is to put his toughness and fearlessness in perspective, lots of people talk about him fighting Prime Bas Ruten. That's how legendary the reputation of Bas is... he's used to validate the legendary reputation of ANOTHER guy.
Really shocked that Forrest Griffin or Tony Ferguson didn't make this list, but it's also really tough to list just 10. I also would had the Diaz Bros. share one spot
Robert Whittaker not being on here is crazy. He was a complete Dark Horse who garnered his reputation and hype completely from test by fire. Bobby Knuckles is from the fans, almost all his hype is organically built.
13:32 No if you're gonna have Chuck Liddell on this list then he is #1 by default. He was the first major superstar of the UFC. Took the UFC itself from a cult following to being a respected sport in the U.S. Most fighters today still have him as their all time favorite fighter
Been a minute since I had to dislike a video on this channel. But not having Tony on here is nuts truly especially when you have Paddy on. Paddy has had a massive fan following from day one. Tony grinded for it. Charles grinded for it. Paddy always had it
Can i ask you to make video of top 10 or 20 iconic statements. Like Khabib said ,,Dana, let's fight your chichen'' or when Chimaev said I kill everybody. It would be a great video with a lot of energy. Thanks!
Oliveira’s run to the title and reign reignited my love for this sport. The dude is just an inspiration.
Too bad he’s not even good enough to beat Arman LMAO
Do Bronx's style taught me meaning of ART in Martial arts.
Lol you didnt watch the fight and you are a casual, if that fight was 5 rounds Do bronx wins every time😂@machoboys8884
@@machoboys8884Weak ass troll attempt.
@@machoboys8884 You're talking as if Arman is some scrub
Not having Tony Ferguson on this list is a CRIME
But having paddy the baddy instead, feels like british bias to me.

@@keegsmusic5746British channel who’d of thought
Yet, Paddy is on the list... People hating you isn't being a cult hero and Paddy was popular with the Northern English.
Big Ferguson fan
MMA used to have such a deep culture and lore. Now it all feels commercial and soulless
Exactly like the nfl.. they try hard to wow everyone with patrick mahomes.. while he is clearly being pushed and assisted by the league..
👏🏾🧠💯🎯👍🏾
Because it is, now it's just a contest of who can make Dana White more money and finding/feeding the next Connor Mcgregor wannabe that never reaches his ankles because there will never be a superstar like him again. It's not about who is the best of the best anymore.
TO ME IT HAS…& I JUST STARTED WATCHING THIS YEAR
Idk about all. There's definitely a large commercial version of it tho, especially compareitively
Andy wang following was legendary
Warrior
@@brennenspice6098 You just don't stand & bang with Andy Wang! He's a warrior
“Andy Wang !? That guy was a real warrior!”-Muhammed Ali
The wang banger needs his own episode
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
no mention of the Gangster from West Linn, Oregon??? this list is Bogus.
Undefeated and undisputed
I'm sad I was hoping for this
Talked about Chael. We figured, he had 0 followers until suddenly he had millions. These guys always had fans ever through the early or unseen periods
Tbf you can't class as chael as cult following when he's a living legend and a icon.
Chael’s popularity doesn’t have cult like roots though I bet was their final point. He got his fans while fighting under big promotions in big fights specifically that Silva fight he popped for. Crazy to think Charlie Olives was ever a slow build up to where he is now. I love how wild this sport can get when it comes to these fighters.
Going from a nobody with the reputation of being a quitter, to quite possibly the most universally beloved man on the roster is an insane transformation.
I hope he manages to get another title run one day, cause that 11 fight win streak was the stuff of legend.
Agreed 💯
Sakuraba still has a cult like following.
I was really expecting to see Saku on here, I just left a similar comment.
@@1chaka well Saku was a legit star in Japan
I find the lack of tony ferguson on this list absolutely criminal
I see Bas Rutten, I click.
Because you're in his cult lol
Paddy did not deserve a spot on this list over guys like tony ferguson, forest griffin, or Jose aldo among probably a dozen other better choices😂
I watched back in the hayday of jose aldo. He was always very underappreciated and overshadowed by silva and barao. I didnt notice him start getting his due mainstream respect until he was old and at BW
He definitely has more of a cult following.
Tank Abbott has to be on this list. His specialty discipline was “Pit Fighting”. When I first saw this, I was like WTF!
No shit
He doesn’t have the fan base. The only people who liked him were drunks, 30 years ago
@@jimlahey3919 Well that can be said with Bas Rutten 30 years ago too. Tank Abbott was a Pro wrestling star as well.
Tank was what we expected fighters to be when MMA was first entering into sports. We know now that guys like that don't usually make it that far, but that was the avatar of what everyone thought the best fighters would be.
@@xftbllplyr2091 Bas actually has a likeable personality. I really don't know anyone who likes/liked Tank Abbott.
Man, Bas was one of the reasons I became a hardcore fan after years of just kinda watching cards whenever I could catch them. CRAZY HOW EVERYBODY IS ON DIDDY AND VIRTUALLY “NO ONE” IS REPORTING CONOR BEING CONVICTED OF RAPE
True colours always show eventually
New fans have no clue about Bas Rutten 😒

They don't even know who the Iceman is
Bas is the man..

Me- Carlos Condit better be on here
1:23
Me- 😮😮😮
Definitely appreciated the NBK love!
So glad to see Condit get a shoutout, probably my favorite fighter of all time. Just an assassin in his prime
Figured Don Frye or Dan Severn would be honorable mentions.
Dan The Beast Severn 100%! The first real wrestler who showed the world what really works!
They’re legends nothing cult about them
7:40 "How exactly did a drug cheat become a cult hero among fans?"
You say that like it's impossible to do. Jon Jones managed it.
Jones certainty didn't
Spitting that real here
Bas Rutten is the shit!!!
my list:
fedor
cro-cop
wanderlei silva
anderson silva
sakuraba
big nog
norifumi "kid" yamamoto
nick diaz
bas rutten
chris cyborg
Who tf is cheering for cyborg?
Man I miss the Cro Cop days.
Not too bad ..
Tank is near the top for me though..
Fedor is in his own class in my book.

Bas Rutten was a legend before the internet. I remember hearing/talking about him in gyms in London. Legends that had left the comfort of their European homes to train hard, in the wide world.
Bas taught me how to defend myself in a 3v1 bar fight... BING BANG.
MMA On Point, you keep me going ❤
Paddy is lame af

The fact dana didnt give him a retirement ceremony was pathetic. Dude been around for decades.

Great review video
The word “fan” is the root word of “fanatic”…
6:30 The look on his face along with the sound effect and narration.. That was a damn good edit fellas. Well done!! 👏🏻💯
This was my fav vid from yall in a while.
You are an absolute casual for not mentioning Tony Ferguson and Chael Sonnen. They are the definition of this topic.
DAMN right
Yeah very surprised tony wasn’t on here
Chael doesn't fit the definition of cult following
Paddy is a bellend. Absolute insult to all the list
Great video!
josh barnetts wrestling career cannot be understated when it comes to building up his cult following
the warmaster is a LEGEND
Very debatable but I like the effort. Respect guys
Max Holloway and Tony gotta be on the list
I never drank the McNugget Kool-Aid
Guess I'm the one dude looking for Cub Swanson on this list
Hate paddy and barnett, probably would switch those 2 with Uncle Chael and Max Holloway
I think Chris Leben deserves a spot on this list. But other than that, y'all did great as usual!
Loved it!
Love that you included 22:53

Love the list, but Randy Couture should have made the cut.

Jose Aldo… Anderson Silva??
