Will Smith was an excellent Ali in the film and Ali was excellent in real life. That line both deliver -- Ali's words verbatim -- is sadly still true, the whites that called out Ali for not going to Vietnam were draft dodgers themselves, escaping with family money to Europe instead of serving (like Trump, for instance), which alone was hypocrisy enough. But here they were telling Ali to go fight, "while they wouldn't fight for [him] here at home." Powerful point and so tragically still the case, when whites scorn protestors against police brutality and turn a blind eye to even the clearest cut cases of racial treatment or when they refuse to condemn the white supremacists in Charlottesville or show up to cheer the kind of appalling rhetoric Trump spews at his rallies. Thank god for Ali and people like him, because he said and did what needed to be said and done, and then some. I wish it had made more of a difference. But maybe there's still time... who knows.

I remember reading somewhere that during the filming of "Ali", The Champ appeared on set when Smith was in the ring. On seeing Ali, Smith went into a rant, Ali-style - "Who's that bum over there - don't he know I'm the greatest of all times?" - hilarious stuff like that. On hearing this, Ali turned to his entourage and asked - "Man - was I really that crazy?" Wasn't he something special? Always able to come up with a killer last word! RIP, Champ - I miss you.

To have the honor to "play the role" of ALI, the movie before he was very sick. Please don't curse, there no cause for it. I'm just a conversing like most people.....talking to Will.
Muhammad was already suffering heavily and I know this because I'm from louisville and met him about a year before ali came out...
Yes, he was suffering, No disagreements, but he wasn't wheelchair bound and was not nearly as sick as he was this year. He and Will had a good time on the set although he was suffering and taking meds and had his nurses and wife with him. I'm a few miles few Louisville now. It's beautiful. But I'm going to end the conversation because all I was saying is I'm sure Will is very sad, but proud to have been CHOSEN TO PLAY THE ROLE OF ALI IN THE MOVIE. THAT'S ALL. MAY YOUR DAY BE PEACEFUL, FILLED WITH LOVE AND SMILES.
I thought Will did a perfect job capturing Ali out of the ring in the movie but not a good job portraying Ali in the ring.

Will Smith did a horrible job in the role of Ali. He just couldn't capture Ali's essence in the sense that Jamie Fox did with Ray Charles. However, I feel that Smith was outstanding in The Pursuit of Happiness.
You have to realise that Will Smith played that part exactly the way the director told him too. The director tells the actors how to act in each scene. You can't blame Will Smith. I for one think he done a great job with what he was given.
I don't know what movie you all were watching but I think Will Smith did a tremendous job portraying Muhammad Ali in this film. So much in fact that I thought I was watching Ali himself.
The mannerisms, the way he talked, and the gesticulations Will smith had in this movie were spot on to Ali's. A great film that shares the story of an even greater man.
