Two of my heroes and as much as I love Sam’s arguments style and choice of words without always agreeing to him .. it was Brian who stole the show this evening with his gargantuan understanding of physics and philosophy and his gifted ability to express arguments in such a coherent way.. There's Brian "Say only nice stuff" Greene arguing for his way to convince people... and there's Sam "Show them they're idiots" Harris arguing for calling a spade a spade. I'm with Sam. I wish Sam would have asked Brian, "How come I don't see you fighting to keep creationism out of the classroom?" I'm losing respect for Brian. I think scientists should be on the front lines fighting against superstition, i.e. religion. But Brian just sits in his house selling books and ignoring his duty to educate people in pure science - which is clearly NOT congruous with religion.

Amazing conversation. No surprise; I love both these guys. But I have to also commend the audience questions at the end, which i usually skip, b/c I usually find them insufferable (either people just wanting to fan-gush, or show off their knowledge by asking questions they’re not sincerely seeking answers to). Audience brought the A-game on this one!
I found most of them interesting, as well as the answers. One in particular that to stands out for me in the end is the one on eating animals. Both the question and answer were thought-provoking and conducive to moving the conversation forward. I’ve listened to many arguments and exchanges on the topic, and this brought something entirely new. So thank you!

I can no longer stand watching the question period in these gatherings. The questioners seem to think they have to explain their own theory before they can ask something. Would it not be easier to have the audience email or tweet their questions, have someone curate them before question period, and then have them read off by the presenters so the audio is intelligible? The act of writing a very long question may cut down on the audience prefaces, and the audio problems should be minimised. You could even project the question on a background behind the presenters. I really am sick of the format in which a questioner spends 10 minutes getting to the question. I think Sam is too!

100% with you, I sometimes am embarrassed for them. It's like they are trying to signal how "deep" or " smart" they are. I like how Matt Dillahunty deals with it by telling them ahead of time "I don't need your life story just ask the question"

They may well have asked interesting and articulated questions but some took too long to do it.
I don't think we realize how very little we actually do know and how much is there still that we do not know and how miserably wrong the things we think we know truly are. And all of this surrounds us and really all we need to do is discover it. After all, math for instance , was in no way invented, sure we came up with the symbols which we could have used anything to denote them with but the math was already there. We are slowly discovering what has already been given to us.

I never understand why people dont point out the most obvious reason as to why we wont ever see intelligent life forms. The problem is the speed of light and time. Even if an alien civilization that was 1 billion light years away had some type of awesome telescope that was FIXED on the earth, they would be viewing the earth as it was a billion years ago. Even if they looked directly at the earth for a million years, they'd never see anything more than a dead planet with no atmosphere. So you'd not only have to luck upon looking at a planet with life, you'd also have to luck upon looking at it at it's correct point in the past.
If they wanted to see how we are today, they'd have to wait 1 billion years from now to even see it.
Well, that's true of life outside our Galaxy. Life within our galaxy, the scales are more manageable (hundreds of years to hundreds of thousands of years - still in the time span a species could exist) but yeah, communicating with them just isn't plausible. Even most of the closest stars would take a century to send a message and then receive a response.
But, the point is to discover they do exist. Communication would be a bonus, but even seeing relics of a civilization long since dead would be world changing

5:35 Dr. Green suggests that understanding the mathematics of quantum physics isn’t useful for survival. What if, in the long run, it actually is? These are important things to understand if a species is to become multi-planetary. And survival on any large time scale DOES require space travel and such mathematical understanding. In that way, math itself could be considered a great filter.

As smart and insightful as Sam is, Brian is so much more natural and an ease on the ear, a great disposition. He is one of very few that are "cool" socialized and a person who I would love to just bullshit with, great social skills, where as Sam, seems to be and is funny, but, is odd in his intelligence. Brian is a just a guy! A brilliant one, and seems to be a star in this forum. Good stuff
Well, while I do agree with you, they had two different roles here, and I would argue that Sam's "mission" is likely far more contentious than Brian's. To put it simply, Brian wants to teach people difficult things, physics/cosmology and such, while Sam wants to get people to unlearn what they already know but are based on irrational beliefs, i.e. religious indoctrination and ideas about consciousness and free will, before learning new, other difficult things, and that statement alone shows that Sam has double the task, the first one being to disabuse people of their strongly held beliefs which many consider fundamental to their identity and who they are, a monumental undertaking certainly not for the faint of heart, for it forces him to confront others and challenge their most core beliefs.

I never implied it was a competition ? Just a commentary on how fun it would be just to talk to Brian, and Sam as I’ve listened to him more since I commented on this forum. Sam is actually hilarious! Despite their brilliance in their respective disciplines I am really happy to be impressed with the personalities of these deeply passionate scientists shine through the spotlight of their work and create a relatability I admire.
Totally agree. In fact, Brian's natural humorous response got a lot of laughter form the audience and Sam tried to copy Brian's humorous style and wasn't very successful. It was so obvious to my ear. I'm pretty sure not everyone is able to catch this subtly.

Two great minds, although i appreciate Sams more 'direct' enquiry into religion whereas Brian is one of the ones who prefers a less direct route, as in science education, to convince someone of the folly of organised religion. Personally, it was the direct enquiry style that led me to free myself from my own indocturnation and tribalism whereas years of science education did'nt make a big enough dent. Still love Brian, though feel Sam has the right amount of respect and direct enquiry into religion to actually change mindsets.

And yeah, Bill Maher is a contentious guy, and guess what, even if you like someone you do not have to agree on everything they say. I like to listen to Sam Harris but on various topics I do not agree with him, e.g. I think he is making himself a tool for the right without even realizing it and often talks about Europe and other places with little knowledge, e.g. not even knowing the actual daily events on the ground or what political framework governs certain developments.

In reference to intelligent life out there we always leave out the idea that in addition to the vast distances involve there is also the fact that out of the 6 billion or so years our earth has been here it’s only the last 100 years or so that we have been able to send information out there. Time is just as great a factor as the vast distances involve
It is not that I agree with Sam on everything (his take on objective morality is fundamentally flawed, and he is wrong on the Monty Hall problem, as two examples of divergence), but every single time I listen to him speak, he is impressive in multiple ways that inspire me to try to be better. When he asked Brian who he would want to represent humanity before an alien contingent, I was thinking, "How about Sam Harris?" (I very much like Greene, too.)

@@gravelpit5680 Sam is fundamentally wrong about objective morality. It is, by it's very nature of being a "thing," subjective. It is an opinion in a very simple, basic way. To get to something being objectively moral, you have to make at least one presupposition, which instantly takes it out of the realm of being objective. He, and those who support the bogus position, presume "well being." Well, that isn't part of the consideration. The consideration is "Is morality fundamentally objective, or subjective?," NOT "If we assume well being is the foundation of morality, is morality objective, or subjective." And even THEN, what constitutes "well being" is ultimately nothing but a subjective view. The stance crumbles all the way through. If he would just be intellectually honest and frame it under the context of "*For practical purposes* , we can say that all sorts of things are fundamentally moral/immoral," then there wouldn't be anything worth quibbling about, but he insists that his views on morality ARE literally objective. They aren't. He has a big ego thing about it, quite obviously. He knows better, but he stubbornly won't give an inch, even though he is quite plainly, demonstrably wrong. I challenge you to name something that is objectively moral/immoral. I can tear it down instantly. And it isn't about me being special in this ability. Countless people can do it.
The problem with comparing AI influence on a game like chess, where "game" means there is a declared paradigm (8X8, pieces w/ specific attributes, etc.) that is applied to achieve a declared outcome (checkmate, stalemate) versus a problem like economic systems, where people's OPINIONS about what is best vary for many reasons (some people like free enterprise; some people are horrified by it) is that the first phenomenon, the game, is a DEFINED paradigm and ALL engagement with the issue is PRESET by rules that can only be defied at the cost of no longer being considered to be playing the game, whereas with the second, economics, there is NO POSSIBLE WAY to engage in the process with anything close to a single set of agreed upon rules, and so AI, essentially by PRESET, will be perpetually prevented from deriving a consensus answer.
Fwiw, that is probably not the longest sentence I've written, but it's up there.
As weird (or potentially horifying) as this sounds, if you have a sufficiently intelligent AI that has a concrete goal (such as elimination of poverty, accrual of capital for the wealthy, the elimination of entire groups of people) people can just agree to largely follow whatever the AI says is best. But you have a serious problem because no one knows what the hell it really wants and what its goal would actually be (let alone if a given goal would be to our detrement)

This demonstrates that Brian’s well of knowledge is incredible and Sam’s intelligence is so much narrower. That said, Sam is indeed a great interviewer specifically with that sense of humor.

So far, the only thing that can shed some light on this mysterious universe is the human brain.
It is a bit interesting that during the inception of an idea, or theory, that some factors are necessary that cannot be considered hard reason, such as creativity, insight, a kind of faith and perhaps even a kind of aesthetics. (Qualifier, I am by no means pushing for religious belief). These factors are not formal or rigid, but are absolutely necessary for intellectual progress.

Instead of using augmentation to make ourselves as knowledgeable as these imagined super smart aliens I think we should first use augmentation to better communicate with the animals here on our planet. I mean, who didn't dream about being able to talk to your dog when you were a kid?
In fact it's the best way I think to actually talk to an alien world view.. A good preparation for the Alien.
The vast majority of Animals dont have anything inside there that would be complex enough to produce an actual language with syntax when transpiled.
I'm guessing research into the "language" of the ultrasonic communication betwwen whales might be interesting but you're not going to get full blown language.
Animals are very interesting and varied but this is one area where the answer/possibility is less interesting imo.
My understanding of the 'many worlds' interpretation is it removes the 'measurement problem'.

Discussions of the Fermi Paradox always seem to ignore the possibility that interstellar travel might be, in principle, highly impractical if not impossible. There is no evidence that it isn't.
Well that's why we are still on earth while alien civilization who has survived for more than 10,000 years with exponential growth of technology are traveling in space.
We are like only 200 years of explosive growth via technology and engineering.
We got a long way to go and understand.
Or..... it is in fact impossible....unless we are in a simulator and our autistic, 28 year old techy genius gives us the ability to travel through space using wormholes and what not than we can do intrastellaer wars.

@Dapdoi Ardon The sheer size of the cosmos makes your statement look mighty unintelligent. We have reached the Kuiper Belt with New Horizons. With consistent funding we put humans on the Moon and that we haven't tackled Mars is only a mixture of pathetic funding, a pathetic weak minded Generation of pussies and humanity concentrating on Religious dogma instead of teaching Science... We have neverending potential but blow it. To say that we or other lifeforms can't reach Interstellar travel is a mixture of negative thought process and only knowing one example of intelligent life.
ricky gervais no it’s more than possible, but most people turn their heads away from it. If the biggest nations came together with a seriousness of space travel, we could make it happen in a decade or less.
Why did decent audio and video take so long? I don't understand how y'all are spending your money.
I would have filmed and recorded audio on this thing for $1000 no problem.
Typically it's difficulties with the audio setup at the venue and the engineers having very limited time to setup and test the gear and connections. A lot of troubleshooting sadly has to happen as the event is taking place. Wish it weren't so, but that's often how these venues wind up complicating things.
@@urzapolariz I don't even care about the venues. I'd circumvent the entire A/V staff and put lav mics directly on the panelists. And it still doesn't explain why the video sucked before. Dunno. I shoot live events for a living and I've never had anything come even remotely as bad as some of the Pangburn stuff.
I dunno, a couple of my close friends are roadies, and they claim that every venue is a nightmare and a new challenge which makes the audio awful and impossible to get working right on a tight schedule. So I just assumed that's likely the case with the Pangburn videos.
@@urzapolariz It is if you're trying to get audio going for a live stream or something, but if don't mind a 24-hour delay between event and upload you can have incredible quality with incredible ease.

Interesting observation concerning the students attending this discussion with Sam and Brian . The male students are primarily wearing T shirts of colors grey and black ! What a dramatic change from 30 to 40 years ago when student s would at least have a sport jacket and some with shirt and tie ! What a generational difference in attire !
I have a question for Brian Green (don't think I have enough time left in this universe to have Sam Harris answer) : Why are there no "B" batteries?
