Augustus McCrae gently took her hands into his. "You are right, ma'am", he began. "James was one of the best Rangers we could have ever had on our troop. Brave and loyal, and everything a man can be... I am sure he was a great husband to you too". The woman nodded. "We write to each other all the time, but his last letter had been sent out from Petersburg, over a year ago. I haven't heard from him since and I hope he is still alive", she explained. Captain McCrae acknowledged her with a solemn nod. "This cruel war has taken a husband, father, brother, or son from almost every farm in this here county", he said, looking downward again. "But, if you hadn't heard yet, it is over", he continued. "General Lee has surrendered to the Union army at Appomattox. We got the news two weeks ago over th' wire". The woman looked into the captain's eyes, tears now flowing freely down her face. "It is my hope as well that every man this county has sent off t' battle will come home to their wives and children again, safe and sound... If James is alive and unhurt, he will always have you in his heart and he will try to come back to you at any chance he's got", said Augustus McCrae, embracing the woman. "I hope you are right", she replied, sobbing...
