I am attending a program at church where neuroscience and psychological studies are used along with Christianity to deal with stopping bad habits. This video is excellent because it is God centered and gives glory to God. Who am I depending on for strength to form good habits? Not psychotherapy! Not understanding how dopamine is formed in my body, etc etc. What is the motivation for forming a habit? For a believer it is your amazing love relationship with God.
Just as we must accept the mystery of Jesus being both 100% God and 100% man, we need to learn to embrace the mystery of God's 100% grace with our 100% effort. We can only do this by the power of the Holy Spirit and faith in God. Just as faith is a gift from God, the desire to do our absolute best for him is a gift also. I pray for more faith, more grace and more resolve to form good habits so that I can be a credit to the one I love more than anything- the Lord himself.
Thank you Sonya for a clear and helpful Biblical explanation, and encouragement in regard to habits. The Charlotte Mason quote about praying and not following that with the correct action hit home with me personally. I have been struggling with a habit for months and realise now that I needed to see the scriptures that would ultimately convict, and convince me. No wonder that my prayers were not enough!
I think it's interesting how people get hung up on the spiritual as if it were separate from the physical. Without even trying how would any of us achieve anything? The Lord requires that we put in effort, and he brings forth the fruit.

Wonderfully timely. A Word in season.
Glad you found this post to be timely for you!
Absolutely, even though you posted it 4 years ago, I was in awe at the (not a) coincidence of it coming to my feed at this particular time.
