    I love how you approached this subject! I think it’s such a hot topic bc some creators give off a vibe of being on a high horse and lecturing their audience rather than kindly informing them. I appreciate how you acknowledge the different walks of life people come from while still standing your ground on this issue. As an artist I love that you’re so concerned about compensation and continue to speak out! Thank you for your amazing videos!

    This is a thoughtful and compassionate video full of great information. Thank you also for treating my experience with so much compassion. That copyright strike video was probably the toughest one I’ve ever made, and at the time I expected it to end my short stint on TH-cam. I’m incredibly grateful for the compassion the community showed me and the grace they gave me for my mistakes. I loved the way you handled this touchy topic. You are truly a gem, Katie.

      Hi friend - I'm really sorry it's such a late reply. I was hoping that I could share a little about your story sensitively and with kindness. I think it was one of the earlier videos of yours that I came across, and was immediately blown away by your integrity and courage, and knew you were exactly the kind of person I wanted to not only follow in the diamond painting community, but also hopefully get to call a friend 💛

    I love how kind and educated you are about all of this!
    I do feel bad for some of the people who DP who are just young, a lot of them are teenagers and can't often afford anything other than amazon or aliexpress. I don't want to get too upset at them for not purchasing licensed paintings because I know they can't probably afford canvases from sites that do license but it's also important to educate but even if you do it's hard to have them actually make the change, especially since the change is quite a difference in cost for young & younger diamond painters.

    This really teaches me not to assume that everything on Amazon is officially licensed. As an artist, I appreciate that you posted this video. It is theft pure and simple. Artists have their artwork stolen for t-shirts, mouse pads, puzzles, posters, etc. for sale online. Commercially, fines for using unlicensed graphics can begin at $8000 USD but for individual artists, there is generally zero restitution. Thanks so much! I just discovered your channel and literally just started my very first diamond painting.

    • @DiamondsandWashi
      @DiamondsandWashi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robin! Welcome! Both to my channel and to this fabulous hobby! I hope you really love it ☺️ I'm appalled at how blatantly artists' work is stolen for everything under the sun, and how difficult it is for you to get any sort of restitution. Unfortunately, it's probably safe to assume that most if not all diamond painting kits (to say nothing of any number of other crafting kits) on Amazon are unlicensed.

    One point I want to raise up. As you have mentioned, so many new shops that offer licensed work have been popping up. Shouldn't more competition lead to lower prices? Prices only seem to go up.
    That being said, my fave shop is Dreamer Designs and DIY moon shop.

    • @DiamondsandWashi
      @DiamondsandWashi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point, Salma. I think that there's probably a "floor" that companies can't realistically drop below and still turn a profit. No matter how much competition there is, the cost of materials still is what it is, and paying out royalties to artists is always going to affect the price. Also, my experience has been that if companies are going to go to the extra effort of licensing artists, often they're going to want to use higher quality materials (nice canvases, poured glue instead of DSA, quality drills, etc) so that the overall quality and experience is consistent.
      I do feel like we're seeing a couple of budget-friendly options popping up like Craft-Ease, Mary's Diamonds (when they're running one of their frequent promos), and Mystical Diamond Art. I'd suggest poking around and seeing if any of those shops carry artwork you're interested in, maybe? I hope that helps a little! 💛

    • @kris7865
      @kris7865 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DiamondsandWashi I agree. I also think that the pandemic has added to the rising costs. I think materials are more scarce and that in turn raises the prices on those materials.

    Great video. Thanks for talking about this important topic in the diamond painting commuinty. I appreciate you bringing up Stock photos, because there is a common misconception that they are free to use. I also appreciate you mentioning that it is theft. Just because artwork is easy to steal, doesn't mean that it is not stealing. And that goes for people who make customs of other people's artwork. No one is entitled to someone else's artwork as a diamond painting. My favorite company is DIYmoon Shop.

  • @JaymeFH

    My favorite company with licensed artwork is Diamond Art Club. I also love Diamond Dotz and I like how accessible their stuff is - you can walk into a store like Joann Fabric and find a ton of options, big and small, and usually a coupon to help save some money! I appreciate your empathetic discussion of this important issue. I absolutely made uninformed purchasing choices when I first started diamond painting, and I really feel the idea that once you know better then you can do better. And more and more companies are making it easier to do better!

    My favorite shops that offer legally licensed kits would have to be DIY Moon Shop and Distracted by Diamonds-those shops in particular always offer images that consistently align with my personal taste! The costs can sometimes feel prohibitively high, as you mentioned, but I think once you come to regard diamond paintings as genuine pieces of art (as they are!), it does feel worth it :)

    This is definitely a topic that is hot recently. I like that you and other creators have provided lists of companies where people can find legally licensed work. I definitely didn’t know when I started and this of course is an expensive hobby. So I understand all sides. I think the way you spoke about this topic was very kind and very informative! I made the mistake of purchasing my first kit from Amazon without realizing that the artwork likely wasn't licensed. I just figured they couldn't sell it if it wasn't - how naive! Now I know better, and I pretty much only purchase Diamond Art Club kits. They're definitely my fave, and like you mentioned, the quality difference is vast. As an artist myself, it's extremely important to me that artists are fairly paid for their work!

    As the mother of up and coming artists, buying licensed art is very important to me. I have one child working on a degree in graphic design, another working on animation degree, and then my oldest is trying to create his own comic book. I have yet to come across too many sellers but everything from DIYMOON. Literally, every artist has something I want from them but I have had to make a list so I don't go overboard.
    Also, Distracted by Diamonds has very cute work. I haven't been able to snag one yet but a large majority of the pieces I see are beautiful.
    I am thankful you and others are so open about licensed artwork because I wouldn't have thought about it otherwise. Which is very sad. You are 10,000% correct about it being easy to order off Amazon and think about what looks visually appealing and cheap. I would rather wait, save and purchase a piece that I'm proud to hang and show off. I would, probably, enjoy the diamond painting process more by taking care with what I'm doing. So thank you!

    Please do not take this the wrong way, but I feel like being on a high horse about only using licensed art work is a lot easier to say when you live in the US. It is not always a case of not wanting to buy the licensed pieces, sometimes it's purely a geographical issue, and you have to work with what is available to you. For example: I live in South Africa. We have very few local suppliers. Shipping (because we are extremely far from the rest of the world), customs fees and paying in dollars is insanely expensive and would make the craft inaccessible to most people. I'd love to have access to more licensed work available to me, but there simply isn't any available. I am in no way saying it is OK to buy "stolen art", it is just another perspective to consider as it is a real problem.

Currently working on some paint by numbers and have a custom pbn coming also have been working on some needlework that I started over 20 years ago and looking into reviving my love of cross stitch, but if I ever get my tax refund before the event is over I am ordering one maybe even a custom one if I can find the artwork that is in the public domain. I see this a LOT in the crochet world as well. Sellers sell things like hello kitty dolls and patterns, along with other popular characters. I actually am currently dealing with my best selling original work being sold by a shop that keeps making new stores and re-listing my work. I'm a single mother of a special ed child with no benefits or child support, and my shop is my only income. It makes me so mad to struggle to feed us and see how they still steal and sell my work, claiming that they PARTNER with those of us they stole from. I don't even do partnerships!

    I only very recently became aware of licensing and how much of a difference it makes for the artists. In the beginning of my diamond painting journey I'd have to say that Diamond Dotz was my favorite company that has licensed images. Although now I'd have to say that Diamond Art Club has taken it's spot for 1st. I made my first purchase from DAC this year and the quality from what I have seen is unmatched, and their variety of artists and styles is awesome!

    When I first started I wasn't aware of any of the licensing issues. I found out about it through a post Mandie Manzano made. I try to tell people about it because maybe they aren't aware. Most people say what's the harm..then I saw another post from Mandie and she said her pictures were being sold on two other sites by third party sellers. It seems to have a trickle effect. I totally agree with you that if this keeps happening the artists are going to stop sharing their work with us which will be heartbreaking!!!

    My favorite is Diamonndartclub. Made one a while back and loved the quality from them. Clear easy to see symbols, soft high quality canvas. Have pre-ordered some more from them recently, hope they will ship soon.

    My favorite companies that have legally licensed paintings are DAC, DIY Moonshop, and Craft-Ease. Great video and hopefully you've helped some people approach purchasing diamond paintings differently. 😊

    I'm a Diamond art club girl, I love the images and the canvas is so soft I have done Dreamers Designs and Diamond Dots as well but my favorite is the DAC's. I know they are pricey but yeah its worth it and you can do the pay in 4 through Paypal so its not that bad lol

    Thank you for the insights Katie. I agree on the point that usually licensed artworks are of the best quality and there’s no price tag on that.
    I love DAC.💙 I got so excited on my first shopping with them that I became a diamond member in just one night.😅😂 It was crazy but at the end of the day, it’s a creative invesrtment.😉I also adore DIY Moonshop.💜 I can’t wait to get my hands on their amazing masterpieces!👌🏻 Someday, I would also love to have something from Distracted by Diamonds and Uniquely Yours Down Under.

    Just wondering if you would consider doing a video about your nails and how you do the stickers. How long they last where you get them from etc?? As your nails always look so pretty!

      I could give that a try! In the meantime, though, I'm sure there are lots of TH-cam videos that talk all about them - they're from the brand Color Street. I love them! 💛

    Hi Katie! My favorite company is Diamond Art Club, since the quality of their kits are consistently good.
    As per the topic of ordering from companies that only sell licensed artwork, another problem that we usually encounter is that the shipping cost is too high. Being based in Asia, it's very tempting to just order from companies based over here, even if they don't sell licensed pieces. Really hoping that some of the US-based companies can somehow ship from somewhere nearer to us, and therefore lower those shipping fees.

      I hear you. I know we're spoiled living in the US, with many companies based here. It seems like more non-US based companies are popping up lately, with licensed artwork. Hopefully the shipping costs drop to more reasonable rates for you guys 💛

    I'm going into my 2nd month of Diamond Painting and I'm so glad that I started hearing about Licensed Artwork at the beginning of my journey. I started dp doing toddler pics of unicorns and foxes lol (for my great niece and great nephew). Then I moved to military art because of my brothers that served. Can't forget a deer pic for my husband. This being said, I ordered the Disney Princesses, the one with a group of 6 together, now after hearing more from this video I'm sure it's probably not licensed because I ordered from somewhere across the ocean....I will be more aware because of your video. All this being said...I'm waiting now on 4 paintings from DAC and can't wait to get them. Hope everyone has a great Saturday, Shelly S.

    Hi Katie, I was reading the rules for this above and it says the comment has to be entered by June 2nd..which I'm guessing is a copy/paste issue and not at all a criticism, just an FYI. That said my favorite company that sells licensed art is Diamond Art Club. I feel like they care about the artists and honoring their work and care just as much about their customers who buy the kits. I only buy licensed art diamond paintings. I want these artists to know I respect them and love their work. Thanks for a great informative video and I think you struck just the right tone, passionate not preachy. Kudos to you! I am crossing my fingers for that Lazy River Pen. I have a collection of hand turned pens but I have not been able to get a Lazy River Pen. 🎨🌈❤️❣️

    I'm learning more and more about licensed diamond painting. The one thing I wish would be the case is that some legit companies offer lower priced diamond painting. As a person with little money to spend every month but loves this craft, I'm exhausted trying to search each individual image I find to make sure it's licensed before I purchase. I don't purposely go and get images I know aren't licensed but it has happened.
