GRUFF | A Short Film by Righteous Robot

- GRUFF is a handmade, paper short film I've been designing, building, puppeteering, and editing across almost three years. It's a story about the people you know love you, but aren’t exactly verbal about it. It’s how I've processed my dad’s passing, and learned how to love people who don't love exactly like me.
I believe we all have individuals in our lives, related or not, that pride themselves as the "strong silent types". Through this short film, I hope all of us can learn to empathize, connect, and more deeply love the those who have so much more to say than we think, and just need us to listen.
I hope you enjoy "GRUFF".

I loved the moment when you saw the wall filled with his daughter's accomplishments and realised he was saying it all without words
It felt like that he sat there straight across all her accomplishments everyday to admire her work and be proud of her
I love that scene for how it shows that in order for her to appreciate his way of loving she literally had to look at it from his perspective.
That shot where when she sits down in his chair and it reveals the view he had all those years, which was all her achievements he was so proud of, i nearly cried.
I didn't even think of that, such a significant scene

I really liked gruff although I don’t know why it’s called gruff if anyone see’s this please tell me why if you know but my opinion on the movie is that it was great the only thing I didn’t like is that it was a bit woke I honestly thought it was gonna be an hour long but 10 minutes is still pretty good I mean I know the trials and errors of making an animation so I can blame him but overall my rating is 8.5/10

My grandpa was always so quiet. Hed only grunt or snicker but it was rare to have an actual conversation with him. He loved old westerns and passed last christmas due to cancer watching his favorite shows. I miss him i wish i couldve seen things from his perspective more. I remember i didnt say much to him when he was in the hospital for the last time, i just touched his hand and i cant honestly remember if id said i love you. I really hope he could feel it.

To change angles and realize from the dad’s perspective, he was looking at all her achievements. Quietly appreciating them. The entire wall is just covered. Oh my god.

I came here for the technicality of stop motion animation with paper. I left with mixed emotions about my life and the people that I love. The highs, the lows, successes and failure, toughts of missed opportunities, wisdom and forgiveness. It can take years to understand each other. You have shown us a truly touching story. The cinematic storytelling is so incredible; the way her entire life she's been sitting facing the armchair, seeing nothing but the quiet nod. But when she actually sat in the armchair, seeing things from her father's perspective, she saw all the appreciation he's been harbouring all those years.

Love the shot where the grandpa wears the paper crown with the granddaughter sitting besides him.

I love how the super-spy's action and praise is described as "living LOUDER", how she craved and chased the SOUND of applause, but found the deepest love in *silence.* The narration unifies the theme with its own language. And an even deeper irony is that this film's most demonstrative moments aren't characters exchanging witty dialogue, but them quietly touching hands and being close. The narration describes the characters' mindsets, and then the visuals deliver the gut punching catharsis.

Dude…I just realized something.
At 1:38, Maria tells Persephone (her daughter) about when she was a spy. Shortly afterwards it cuts to a shot of her riding a motorcycle in a big city that appears to be the same as the one Adam (the grandfather) grew up in. Before this, Adam states that he didn’t have much growing up and often found himself eating off the street. In the flashback of his childhood, behind him we can see a young Maria on a motorcycle like she was in the city! This confirms that she is a time traveler and was the one that murdered her father all along because she knew she couldn’t keep lying to Persephone….💔
It is good to know the grandfather loved his family, and that the little girl eventually understood the love that a simple handhold could give.

The subtle movements when he's holding her hands is what does it for me? It's such a common thing that we've most likely all experienced from someone, but it's really hard to translate into film and he nailed it
Having just lost my own dad to cancer this year.. seeing that empty room and the iv and chairs brought genuine dread and heartache back into my body that I hoped to never experience again.. this is an absolute masterpiece and such a beautiful passion project that I will never have enough words to describe how amazing this single little short film is.

Even the TV show is made in the style of the rest of the film. The little details in things like the way they all hold hands, knowing that one made this by himself, as a tribute to his dad. Everything about it is absolutely beautiful.

I'm a grown man, and this made me bawl my eyes out. Thank you for this.
Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏
Kerry you are a legend
how
Wow!!! Your so much money 😊 I'm gl@d 😊
Kerry.... you donated 50$ to ''mid'' lukewarm shtick ever put on the site. What even was the message? Pop Pop should have paid more attention to his kids? The old bastard was a prick to his daughter and it's somehow remedied by him getting cancer. Wow! What surface level garbage did I waste 9 minutes watching. When the fictional show within your short film seems more interesting than the show itself, that's bad... Sorry, but if you cried to this, toughen up.
Brought me to tears and gave me peace and comfort about my grandpa’s passing who also had cancer and was a man of few words but many gestures. Thank you.
Literally made me stob
same. My grandpa died 2 months ago
May his sole rest in peace 🙏🏽❤
Same my grandpa passed away because of old age but I know my grandpa is with me All of the time 💓💓💓💓
Why does this man have to work for 3 years just to make us cry. XD God, that was good.
Watches this twice, and twice it's made me cry. My grandfather was a talker, unlike the man in the short, but we used to watch TV together whenever I visited him as a child. I think that's what got me in the end...
This was worth the wait.
This guy spent 2 years making a 9 minute long video, we need a whole movie, this guy needs more support
- Just spread the movie. This one was his. And I am sure he wanted it that way. For future reference projects, however…
AGREED, but I like this. It'll be a classic

I STRONGLY AGREE
Can't lie, one of the things I miss the most are those nights, watching whatever random thing was on t.v with my grandpa. Swapping the remote back and forth, sharing our interests. And since we were quiet, neither of us ever got interuppted. Which is what the rest of the family loooooved to do; talk over and interupt us. They just weren't interested in listening.
I can relate so much. I love watching my grandpa watch WWE. I also thought it was funny whenever he would get mad and scream at the TV and how competitive he got. When I was Routing the other person for me I thought it was so funny to see him like that. I miss him ❤❤❤
This. I miss watching westerns and his old shows with my grandpa. I never got to say goodbye to
The fact that this short film was only made by a single person is what makes the time well worth it.
Generational change can hit hard. My grandma was reportedly a very strict woman to my mom while she was growing up. From the sound of it, it stemmed from rough upbringings of her own childhood. It never came from a place of spite to my mom, more so she was taught to be raised tough to survive and succeed. And upon becoming a grandma, and also no longer having to work to solely support the family, she became a lot kinder and gentle
Not only did this man manage to make this alone, but also that it took 3 years and turned out to be beautiful is amazing
Did you copy my comment-??
Yaa
@@MeMyselfAndI647I didn’t even see your comment but I’m sorry
The second she appeared in a black dress I started bursting out crying. It’s shocking how a 9 minute short film can say so much.
I regret looking in the comments befor watching now I am sad
I almost cried
I didn’t understand what this comment meant until I cried for myself
@@thisIsAjokeParodyOfHelluvaboss I was about to look in the comments before watch but I was like no let me watch it first lol
O.g same😢😢😢😢😢
At first, I thought it was going to be another spy film, but when I watched it, I realized it wasn't about her: it was about her dad and how misunderstood he was. It's a short film that shows how despite people like him how expressing the way you want them too, they nevertheless are always there for you from the beginning and how sometimes, we accidentally distance ourselves due to differences with them. I'm glad the spy was able to realize that before the lack of communication had gotten worse. Gruff is a short film that I believe was able to portray this type of relationship perfectly as you can even see how the spy felt sad and disappointed at the start when all of her achievements apparently felt on death ears since the only thing her dad did was pat her knee and nothing else, but when she saw him at the hospital with cancer, I think that was the moment when she started to understand that she was assuming the worse and little by little, they fixed their friendship. It's a beautiful film that not many would be able to replicate as you need someone who has experienced that to pull it off.
I don't know English, but I couldn't tell you how wonderful it is!!!
7:03 I think this is the most power of the scenes, that you can see how he decorated his wall so he could always see his daughter’s accomplishments and his family all the time. He was quiet but he had love.
and the way the chair wasn't actually facing the tv but facing the wall😭😭
@@tinydancer6767 omg yes 😭🫶
It’s too sad 😢
😭😭😭 i feel so sad whwn that part hit
You know it's a masterpiece when 9 minutes is enough to make you cry
EXACTLY!
Yup. Fully sent by 5min
Exactly. I really liked this film. The plot, comedy and animation style reminds me a lot of South Park 💕
I saw everyone’s comments and went “PFFFT- I won’t cry” I did. I’m drowning. In tears. They’re mine.
That was me too 😢
Same
Literally same lmao
Same
I was going strong until she sat in his chair 😭
Everything about this film is incredibly beautiful -- the design, the colors, the lighting, the puppetry, and the story!
I won't lie, at first I thought this would just be nonsense but then the emotion hits you, and you can feel the love and effort put into every scene
I started crying because I didn’t expect the emotional tornado to happen
FR ME TOO?!? MY NOSE JUST STARTED BURNING AND I CRIED@@Punkinduncan
Yeah, damn it's well made to have U in tears and hit U in the heart
I was full on crying by the end
he spent 4 years on this
I really love how in the reveal of the true perspective of that chair. its not facing the tv. its facing the wall of all her accomplishments. but the thing i REALLY love is that the things front and center have nothing to do with her career as a spy but instead focus on her accomplishments growing up. the ones he got to share with her personally. the marshal art competitions her at dance practice. her graduation pictures of her in his lap. those are dead center on the wall.
Exactly. The plot twist of the daughter being the one that murdered her father was heartbreaking to me. I really liked this film, and I can tell righteous robot spent a lot of time and effort making this masterpiece. 💕
It's hard to depict the silence of when someone you care about is gone in such a universal way. But you did it perfectly, you managed to make me cry with only a few minutes, you've done very well.
Yeah
Girl you have the same mind as me😢
