I Lost 40 Pounds! | My Fitness Journey From Skinny To Fit

  • My fitness journey has taken me from skinny to gaining over 40 pounds to losing 40 pounds and then finally getting up to a healthy weight. Fitness and health for me are more about being healthy and around for my kids than it is about looking good.
    Vuori Banks Short - go.magik.ly/ml/1cyyi/
Vuori Strato Tech Tee - go.magik.ly/ml/1cyyc/
Vuori Ripstop Traveler Jogger - go.magik.ly/ml/1cyyl/
Vuori Ponto Performance Crew - go.magik.ly/ml/1cyye/
All my life I have had a bit more fat on my frame than I would have liked. When I went full-time on TH-cam I decided to finally get strong and build as much muscle as I could. I ended up getting up to 205 lbs before I decided to start a fat-burning program. As I got bigger I had to get some new workout clothes and Vuori Clothing was there to help me get some high-quality essentials that I still love wearing to this day.
To make a long story short I ended up going from 205 pounds down to 162 pounds and back up to 180 pounds. I feel healthy and strong where I am at and am focusing on getting strong and staying healthy both for myself and for my family.
Do you have a fitness journey? What have you learned from the struggles that come with keeping your body healthy? Let us know in the comments!

    Often,
our kids don't listen to us,
    they watch us.
Diet (what goes in the mouth)
    Exercise (what the body does)
How we speak (what leaves the mouth)
all have an affect on our physical health as well as the health of our relationships . . .
and can leave a legacy of health for our children.
Kudos to you on your progress this year!
    Ease and Peace!

Way to go Jon! I’m 30 also. Started working out with a trainer in July. I’ve been 60-80 lbs overweight the last 10 years or so. Finally something has clicked in the last couple months and weight is coming off. I love my trainer. And as I check off each weight milestone I’m telling myself I’m not going back to that number never again! I think we reach a point at 30 where we just want to make it a permanent change in our lives.

Another good reason to stay in shape and maintain an overall healthy lifestyle is to set the example for our kids. Especially when they are young they mimic us and it’s a personal responsibility to us as adults to keep them active and not live a life planted in front of a screen.

It always makes it more inspiring to see someone a similar build & height as me improve their strength; and physique along with it. I've been dieting, 6 months ago was 225, now 194. When I reach 180 I'd like to be muscular & I'll focus on gaining weight in muscle. I'm 25, 6'1 & have been skinny fat for years. But, I really don't have any excuses besides time. For now, it's 3 days a week for 2/2.5 hours. Good luck on your journey, I hope to see you achieve your fitness goal.

Good luck on your journey. Just make sure you remember that the fitness journey is a slow well paced race, don't get down on yourself if you don't hit the results you want within the time frame you set for yourself. Especially when it comes to deadlifts, squats, bench etc it will take you awhile to get back to those prepandemic numbers just because of the sheer weight difference you had. You can move a lot more weight around when you weigh 205 vs. 180s.

I would say it is a struggle but yes I am currently back on that journey again. So started jumping rope for the last year and a half. I added a weight training program for the last 40 days or so. I feel like setting bigger goals similar to yours (lifestyle, health, functional fitness) gives you the other benefits aesthetically that you may be wanting as well. I appreciated the message you shared here. Thanks!

Hi Jon, I really do hope you make similar videos such as this. One reason I say that is, I'd like to know what you mean by 'eating clean'. I've heard that many times, but I'd like to know what your definition would be.
I hope you and the family are enjoying NY. Miss knowing that a great YT'er no longer lives here in Pittsburgh, but all is forgiven. 😄😃

I disagree with one point you made. There exists NO scientific data that suggests that a person will naturally put on weight in their 30's, 40's, and 50's. Latest research (2021), proved this. All weight gain is related to increase in caloric intake, less movement, slowing metabolism by way of reduced lean muscle tissue, and less activity. I was not lean when I was 25, but I'm almost 60 years old now, and have a six pack. It's not that hard to do. I workout in the gym twice a week; once for weight training once for HIIT cardio, and on the 5 off days I walk 12 K 15 K per day. This gaining of fat and weight as we age is not natural, and there is no need for it to happen. It happens because people let it happen by way of their daily behaviors. Thanks Ian. Love your channel.

Agree. The claim it's natural to gain weight is just an excuse for laziness!

Question for you. When you work out I know you obviously have certain work out clothes that you wear but do you buy specific underwear for working out in? I always feel guilty wearing nicer underwear that I wear for everyday wear and sweating in them. Do you styles/brands that you recommend and what do you find is the most comfortable underwear to work out in. I'm always left adjusting myself lol.
Would you consider making a video with all the fitness apparel you wear/work out in? Could definitely use some recommendations!

Being healthy where your comfortable is very important. Building muscle mass helps as you get older. The biggest challenge is managing stress, working out and keeping the ball moving forward regardless of age. So life goal: to know exercise will be a part of your life until your very last day. Make it routine and don’t get obsessed about perfection. Get obsessed about health. Get your yearly physical and tests. Make sure you have all your vitals in the norm. If they go outside of norm take seriously and fix with meds, diet and exercise.

I’ll be 49 next week and I started my process of improving health when I was 35, Now, I work with people to work on their habits for sustainable eating (using macros) and while I have people who eat “clean”, they realized that even with clean and all organic, they can still eat too damn much. Once they learned that balance , they feel so much less frustrated.

very early morning or late nights jogs and then gym if you are time crunched and a great way to get some down time to yourself, a few times a week. Get into a natural rhythm, natural food and you will reach your goals. It's so easy.

Jon, you look real good, lean, trim fit in your pic at "165?". The older you get focus on endurance first and strength secondly. Less weight on your body/frame means less calorires you have to eat to maintain the muscle and less weight/stress on your joints/knees when you run. As always Jon, all the best to you and yours...

It's fantastic that you have found the comfortable weight that works for you! You are not trying to be rail thin, you are not bulking (getting super fat) and then cutting and you are not going the dangerous, super intense, get your muscles as huge as possible (Cross Fit) route. Most of us do get a little heavier every decade of our lives, because it's twice as hard every ten years to maintain the same weight with the same muscle. Everyday I see the guys that developed super huge pecs when they were young and they sag and sag as they get older. We don't see Arnold running around without a shirt on, but he looks great covered up, but he can afford the finest surgery centers in the world.

Americans are stewed in a very unhealthy environment of activity choices and foods. I dread going there for the food options are awful. You have to look hard for vegetable as a tourist. So it’s great to hear stories like this that might inspire others to start a sustainable healthy lifestyle.
Cut the fat. Stop smoking. Increase fibre and do regular exercise’ do whatever you enjoy. Tennis. Walk. Swim. Run. Hockey. Gym. Chair calisthenics. Just get off the sofa and move your body safely. Check with your doctor if you have medical issues.
