*pork and poultry* - NC is also top 3 in hog and poultry production so great local Q and fried chicken for dang sure.
*sweet potatoes* - But here’s a surprise. NC is the country’s leading producer of sweet potatoes. So if you’re at a diner or BBQ joint and see sweet potato casserole or pie, give it a shot. 👍

North Carolinian born and bred. Pepsi is actually not dominant in parts of North Carolina. In the Charlotte area you are a lot more likely to find restaurants that serve Coke. Once you get into the interior of North Carolina in places like Raleigh, you start to see more Pepsi. Also that’s why Bojangles serves Pepsi because Bojangles in my opinion is the North Carolina fast food institution. I’m sure I am not the only one who will defend its honor like it’s our wife or girlfriend.

A couple of favorites you forgot.
    1. Sundrop...it's a lemon lime soda similar to Mt Dew or Mellow Yellow. And like Cheerwine, we use it in lots of recipes.
    2. Red or BBQ slaw. Actually in NC we have 2 BBQ types. Both are pit cooked but up in the mountain area its more of a sweet thick sauce. But if you are eating eastern/ Lexington BBQ (which is the the best BBQ on planet earth) which is vinegar based, then it is often served with red slaw which uses either BBQ sauce or ketchup as it's base rather than mayo. And it's almost exclusive to the mid part of the state. I'm a NC native who now resides in Greenville SC so just a little over an hour over the border. Due to the proximity to NC you will find most BBQ joints here serve vinegar based BBQ even though SC is known more for a highly incorrect mustard based sauce. But it's hard to find red slaw around these parts.
    3. NC wine. Right where you are is the heart of the NC wine country. And there in pilot mountain you can rent these incredible old tobacco barns that have been converted to awesome bnbs. Anyhoo..in NC they use a muscdine grape which gives it a different flavor. The largest winery in the country is at the Biltmore estate in Ashville.
But great job on highlighting my home state. She is truly beautiful and everyone should pay her a visit. And lord I always forget not every one has access to Bojangles or Cook Out. Bless your hearts.

Great overview!! NC has a divided vote on tomato-based and vinegar based bbq sauce (Eastern is vinegar). They also generally cook whole hogs in eastern NC bbq places.
One thing about Cookout that is awesome is there are so many flavors of milkshakes, some seasonal. You can upgrade a big double platter to include a milkshake for only $1!
Around Raleigh a few more popular local fast food chains worth checking out are Char Grill and Snoopy's Hot Dogs.
