Chris and Sara, thank you so much for loving my home town. I miss it so much! I have lived in the US now for the last 32 years of my life but when I see videos like your video, I can still smell the trees on a rainy day, taste the street tacos, feel the cool breeze in the evenings, hear the busy streets, and so much more. Mexico City is a magical place where three civilizations met and blended forever. Enjoy!

Daniel, thank you so much for your kind comment! We wish we could send you some tacos and an evening breeze up to you in the US. Your hometown is incredible and we're so thankful your old neighbors have been so welcoming and hospitable. We've certainly fallen in love with your country this month. ❤

Same here! I have lived in the US and Canada for the past 22 years. And watching this video reminded me of the peace and tranquility I would experience growing up in Mexico City and walking some of the streets close to the areas you show in the video. It's hard to describe how such a crowded city can actually feel so easy going. Also - there's a lot of nature for such a large urban area!

    MEXICO CITY 🇲🇽
The oldest capital of North America, and of the Americas.
    (Mexico-Tenochtitlan)
Historical capital of four political entities:
    Capital of the Aztec Empire
Capital of the Viceroyalty of the New Spain
Capital of the First Mexican Empire
    Capital of the Mexican Republic
Nicknamed by the conquerors The Venice of the new world.
Mexico City, is the second city with more museums, in the world, has the Chapultepec Castle, the only real castle in America to be inhabited by emperors.
Besides the Bosque de Chapultepec that is three times bigger than Central Park in New York.
El Paseo de la Reforma is considered the second most beautiful avenue in the world, after the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
The capital has a legacy that mixes architecture, pre-Hispanic, colonial, and modern, making Mexico City a cosmopolitan city.
The ancient Mexico-Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec Empire, has been transformed into "Mexico City"
    The metropolis of Latin America.

Looks like a place we want to go asap! We have been to other parts of Mexico many times and love it. Just a tip, I've heard that other cultures really appreciate even a feeble attempt at speaking their language. You can use an app or get a english/spanish dictionary to just master some basic phrases. Looking forward to more videos. We may go there in October.

Hey Mary! Definitely we're speaking every bit of Spanish we can remember and are using Google Translate to try and learn phrases as we go. Doing the best we can. :) We always try to learn a bit of the language whenever we travel abroad just out of respect for the locals.

    • @chrisandsara

Hey Lucas! So good to see you out here! :) Mexico City has become MUCH safer in the last several years. The area we're staying in very safe and clean, which is why we chose it when researching our time here. That being said, the city definitely has a crime issue in parts. We're staying away from areas that we here are less favorable and typically we aren't out at night unless we're Ubering. Honestly, we're traveling the same way here as we would in any other major city in the USA or abroad-- using common sense. :)

Mexico City, one of the world's largest and most populous urban centers, is a captivating mix of history, culture, and modernity. Its bustling streets are lined with a rich tapestry of architectural wonders, from ancient Aztec ruins to colonial-era churches and contemporary skyscrapers. The city pulses with energy, offering an array of culinary delights, world-class museums, and vibrant street art. While it grapples with challenges like congestion and pollution, it's also a place of resilience and transformation, where diverse communities coexist. Mexico City's dynamic atmosphere, deep-rooted traditions, and a constant influx of creativity make it an exciting, complex, and ever-evolving metropolis. Thanks, Chris and Sara!

I’m A Chicana from the East Coast (Washington DC) and I can tell you for a fact, that the majority of gringos are super ignorant about Mexico.

There's many Mexico Cities inside Mexico City, there is Centro, Roma, Condesa, Chapultepec, what is the main turistic-historic, most gentrified part of the city, there's Tlatelolco little northern this areas, an ancient cite from the mexicas (aztecs) that was turn into the greatest proyect of public housing, and where students protesting where massacred by the government in 1968 (just before the Olympics) in Plaza de las Tres Culturas (Plaza of the three cultures) known as it because of the meeting of the three cultures of mexian history: the ancient ruins, an old colonial church, and the modern progressive construction of the complex (1950s).
On the south you can dive into the old colonial towns that got eaten from the city like Coyoacán Centro and San Ángel, where you can find museums (as Frida Kahlo's or Trotsky's house), very old churches form the XVI century, lots of handcraffts (Bazar del Sábado), and the most traditional mexican restaurants (recommend Fonda el Morral, and Mercado de Coyoacán).
Even southern there is Ciudad Universitaria (C.U.), the campus of the National University of Mexico, known as a world heritage place with murals from Orozco, Siqueiros and Oghorman, and a plain field to sit on a tree and chill with your dog.
The most important museums I recommend: MUNAL, Bellas Artes, Museo de la Ciudad de México, Frida Kahlo's house, Trotsky's house, Castillo de Chapultepec, Museo Nacional de Antropología, Museo de Arte Moderno, Museo Tamayo, Soumaya, Museo Jumex, Cineteca Nacional, the aztec ruins behind the cathedral, Casa-Estudio Frida y Diego, and much more!
Don't get scared to use the metro, it is actually safe and most of the terror is because of the stigmatization of it (mostly bc racism and clasism), theres security guards in every station, just take care of your belongings bc the most that can happen is getting pick-pocketed. Also try to avoid the peak hours bc it gets very congestionated.
It's important to know that not all CDMX looks like Condesa or Roma or Centro, there's many realities inside the city. There are american like suburbs, there are poor and segragated parts of town, lots of public housing complex, as lots of private luxurius appartments. Mexico City is still a very divided city although its history of blended cultures. Loved the video. :)
