FWIW, people did complain about how many marvel movies there are and people do complain about spinoffs/remakes/etc etc but the greater point is the same. We can call them cash grabs but at the end of the day everything you buy is a cash grab. People make things to sell them, not altruism. Naturally, people will make more of things that are similar to things people already buy. This is how the world works. On a related point, I’m not really a board gamer but as a naturalist, wingspan brought me into this world. But it has the same barrier to entry a lot of games do - it’s a pain in the ass to set up, it takes up a lot of space, the rules are tough for noobs to learn, and scoring is confusing. If we can have a similar game that has lighter mechanics but also scratches the itch for a wildlife theme with the same art style, that is *exactly* what I want out of this industry. Even I thought it came out too soon and felt like a cash grab, but it’s also exactly the product this industry needed to make to keep me in.
I won´t buy Wyrmspan and won´t buy Finspan, I´m happy with my full collection of Wingspan. But I don´t see why people´s ranting: Welcome to...(3 cores + 11 expansions), Catan (20), Pandemic (15), Zombicide (9), Azul (6), Risk (1 billion), Monopoly (2 billion), Codenames (11),...Easy: Don´t want the game? Don´t buy the game.
Check out Jamey’s game diary titled “January 9: Finspan’s Origin Story and What’s Different Compared to Wingspan” on Board Game Geek. Great diary entry.
No issues with Finspan, I just had a good laugh, because the announcement honestly sounded like an early april fools joke. When Wyrmspan was announced, it felt like the obvious next step since many people had said they wished they had a Wingspan with dragons (my flatmate had uttered that phrase just weeks before the announcement came). Finspan is more out of left field, I think. No issues with its existence and I hope people enjoy it immensely. I don't think it will be for me, I'm very happy with Wyrmspan, and I find fish kinda boring personally. I just find the whole thing kinda funny.
I was surprised and didn’t think it was real at first too. Partially because it is just a year after Wyrmspan. But I was like kind of a risky move but cool. And it makes tons of sense once I read why. It was just the negativity, the massive amounts of not clever jokes that bugged me. There was one clever joke I laughed out loud at. Someone said the next game would be Greenspan (after Alan Greenspan) and be an economic engine building game. I thought that was really funny.
So funny ... nobody rages about the 100.000th version of monopoly ^^ Think almost every household must own one by now but nobody ever plays it :P So rather a good game rethemed and updated for a new audience. WyrmSpan was sufficiently different as to feel just rethemed and I am quite sure Jamie Stegmaier will work his magic with FinSpan as well! Happy gaming everyone :D PS there are actually very few good games about fish - most are either about building civilizations in the Ocean or Fishing :P
The gameplay is a little bit different than Wingspan. The comparison with all the different Codenames isn't right because all those different Codenames have the exact same gameplay. Wyrmspan i wasn't a fan of because it doesn't play smooth enough and the gameplay was to long. Wingspan i like a lot especially the autorazzia (coop). Finspan is different than Wingspan and i will give it a change. Also because of the great fish theme.
I heard the co-op mode is really good. I’ve only ever played base Wingspan, which I like quite a bit. While a fairly simple game, it is so smooth. The common complaints, dice and not getting birds you need, has never bugged me. I should hopefully try Wyrmspan this year to see what I think. There are very very few good fish themed games so I’m hoping this is a success for those that enjoy fish!!
@The.FrozenGamer Indeed, with my ex-girlfriend in have played 600 fysical Wingspan auto razzia games against the co-op. We made it a lot difficult because a card for the auto razzia won't be counted as 5 but as 7. We still won most of the games.
Yup. Took a holiday break to finish grad school and be with the kids. Thanks, the painting has been challenging but very relaxing. Would love to try Wyrmspan!
Like 100 expansions, and 10 different base versions, even different farm rules in different versions of the base game! lol. Good comparison. And Nobody complains! 👍 (And I love Carc…with expansions and even just the vanilla base game)
I agree, though I think it's too soon for Finspan. Wingspan was 2019. Wyrmspan 2024 and Finspan 2025? I would absolutely push it out just based on appetite. I think Finspan looks good though.
I see your point on release schedule. They are almost putting out a competing product…hopefully they have some datasets they looked over to make sure it’s a good time.
I have all of Wingspan and Wyrmspan. I won't be getting Finspan. I do hope I get to play it at some point though. I don't have any issues with SM games making more games. My shelves are more than full, and at this point I need to sell games to make room for new games or just play what I have. 🍻
i think finspan looking great and wud like to try it :) more different then the dragonwingspan aswell (diddnt buy wyrmspan becous it looked way to close to wingspan)
Wyrmspan adds a decent amount of strategy to the Wingspan base mechanisms, and fixes a few of the issues I've always had with Wingspan, so I HIGHLY recommend checking it out!
Funny, the only real “outrage” I’ve seen is people mad about people making fun of another version of Wingspan. I saw a few jokes about it and 10,000 people complaining and upset about the jokes. So sensitive.. who cares if people don’t like a game you like? Who cares if people don’t like the idea of another Wingspan? Is it ruining your excitement or your enjoyment of another Wingspan?
My question I’m asking is why are people caring so much about this iteration when they don’t give a darn about most every other games iterations? Why is Stonemaier getting people so sensitive that they have to joke and whine and about it?
I wanted it, watched how it was played and realized it wasn’t for me as I did not think it looked good. I was surprised when I started seeing people on BGG say they liked it. It currently has a 7.0 rating which isn’t bad. I remember the Dice Tower gave it not great scores. I love the box cover though, I will give it props for that!!!
Ticket to Ride has like a million different versions. I think a Wingspan style game about fish sounds amazing!
Yup. Stonemaier being held at a different standard for some reason. I’m glad the fish theme resonates with you!

Well stated observation!
Hmmm, I make tons of things without the intention of selling them.

Well said!!! ❤
Wyrmspan feels different enough than wingspan and I almost like it more. But I don’t know that I’ll do finspan

@ that is impressive!
Looking forward to butterflyspan!
I think they are done minus expansions.
I am looking forward to “trading in the Mediterranean span.“
In my opinion, people have too many opinions. 😂
😂😂😂
😁
So good to see ya back! Hope you had some great hollidays! The painting is awesome! Keep it up! Wyrmspawn is fantastic!
Yup. Took a holiday break to finish grad school and be with the kids. Thanks, the painting has been challenging but very relaxing. Would love to try Wyrmspan!
How many Carcassones are there?

I just did my own cull for space on the shelves. Sold some of my own, the rest I’m trying to trade via the BGG monthly math trades.
This is exactly my take on this. I really like wyrmspan. Also these are other people’s iterations of wingspan. Which I think is cool!
My thoughts exactly. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
i think finspan looking great and wud like to try it :)

Finspan definitely has the most unique visual look. I hope you get a chance to give it a play!

@@cartmanbeck sounds like my friend is going to bring it to a game night so it looks like it will happen!!!

Build-a-Cult is a way better game built on a similar card based engine builder.
If I’m going with a build-a game, I’m picking 1984’s Build a Better Burger. 🍔.
I skipped lunch today. 😂
Nope Red Rising is trash, look into the light.
