Thank you ladies for such a very useful discussion. I was diagnosed with lichen sclerosus after ages as 3 GP’s didn’t recognise the condition. This combined with vaginal atrophy was blue murder. Using Vagifem now and waiting to see a gynaecologist
On April 30 2021 had my total hysterectomy. I had suffered from PMDD all my adult life, which was truly awful mentally. For years I begged my doctors to allow me the surgery. Now that I am suffering from VA I find myself wishing that this would have been something dr would have told me would happen without added hormones.
Talking was unclear and way too fast. The Closed Captions didn't help because they were FULL of errors. This looks important, but I didn't get much out of what little I understood. I suggest editing the Closed Captions to fix this video.
@@nz5752 Tried that and it helped, but still there was plenty that I couldn't understand. This was apparently recorded in a small room with nothing to absorb the echo, and I am unfamiliar with their accent. Also, high women's voices are always hard for older people (like me) to understand due to high frequency hearing loss. So, if they want to send a message to older people, they really need to do it in a way that older people can hear and understand.
I am 55 and diabetic double whammy, miserable, glad to find your video, I am on vaginal estrogen, and with urine incontinent to boot. The answer per my gyno say this is all I need is estrogen. I hate that the second I have relationship it sparks up again a lot of “pain” dryness, itchy, raw and my labials feel like sandpaper. I wish my husband wouldn’t want sex anymore, I could live without it myself, but that’s not the case, sorry to be so somber. I thought I hated heavy periods and bad cramps growing up and thought that was the worst, I would take back a period and cramps for one day a month than this issue. I hate that after sex, even with extra Lubricants it absorbs fast anyway. Doesn’t last, I still need to run to restroom. I hate the smell and need to rinse or sit in lukewarm water to soothe😢Question; what is ok to wash with besides water? Question: Laser “Mona Lisa” treatment is recommended? What do you know of this ? Thank you.
Dr. Renee, please give me your opinion. I just found this video today, and am very grateful for you and it. Until 4 years ago, I was taking HRT fir 11 years, and loved it, but had a heart attack. Since then, my doctor took me off if it, and will not ‘allow’ me to have it back. I am now 63, and apparently gave some atrophy. I did not have a heart attack due to blocked arteries, as I dad a SCAD, then a heart attack, and it has been discovered that I have ‘Fibromuscular Dysplasia’, which brought about the coronary artery dissection, and lots of clots. My doctor doesn’t want to chance me getting even a small clot again. However, I never had a clot while in HRT, or due to it. So, as a result, when I asked to at least if he will prescribe me some Estrogen Cream, he still says ‘no’! He feels that the Estrogen Cream can pass through into my blood system. I disagree. What do you think about this? What are my options? I am more than willing to chance using cream in my vagina to help make myself feel normalized. Please advise.
Taking probiotics for vaginal health. Still have a stronger scent down south that I never had. I’m 61 and haven’t had sex in a year and a half. Terrible atrophy of the vulva and vagina. Even the estrogen cream doesn’t help anymore. I am a breast cancer survivor since 2008. My oncologist approved of using a dab of etrace three times a week.. I would gladly have a period again to not be post menopausal.
Thank you so much for this video.Watching in 2021.Entering perimenopause and hating the symptoms.Haven’t been for my routine smear test in three years because of this. The part you mentioned about the elderly women and in third world countries maybe not having options is upsetting to hear.
I am living this dream. Ha! The whole gamut of problems are numerous and there is not enough discussion. Still experimenting, trying different things. It sucks.
Thank you so much for this video - I hope I can get the correct treatment from a gp and the info about dilators which I’d never heard of and seem to be very expensive but I now have some idea what they are!
please add vaginal infections and yeast infections which is one of the reasons I have to go on Premarin. I am post-menopausal and also am experiencing other symptoms you are talking about.
@@echase416 Thank you Emma for that info. I have been on the lowest dose...recently cut in half... for 5 months since I posted. I just can't stand using it because it is messy for days(21 days plus2 once I stop)Then no premarin for 7 days.
Yes. Listen to The video. Seek out Rachel Rubin MD, Kelly Casperson MD, Louise Newson MD. Vaginal estrogen is extremely safe and all women age 45 and over should be using (as well as younger women who’ve been through menopause or in perimenopause.)
I have vaginal atrophy and started estriol vaginally for terrible itching. After being on the estriol for a few months, I am now getting migraines as I slowly increase my dosage to the 2 grams twice a week prescribed. Happy about the itching decreasing, but bummed about the migraines. I am wondering if the migraines will be a temporary issue that I need to deal with, and what I can do to rid this problem. I definitely do not want to go off of the estriol since I am getting long needed relief for the itching that drove me insane.
Christine Swanson Are you in the UK? That’s quite a big dose. In the UK we use 0.1% and we use a small applicator 3x a week. At this dose we do not usually see enough systematic absorption to affect symptoms such as migraines etc. I would suggest lowering the dose and seeing if it is definitely the vaginal oestrogen. It could be that your systemic hormone level is dropping simultaneously and that is actually the cause of the migraines and this could mean that you need HRT systemically to help. However, this is very generic information and you should have these discussions with your doctor and any changes made in conjunction with them.
Hi Bridget. I am sorry that you are low. I would advise reading up on oestrogen and i found Oestrogen Matters a good and well referenced book. You don't sy what cancer you had and so it is difficult to comment further. The systemic absorption of topical oestrogen is tiny and some oncologists are not up to date with data and so err on the side of caution. You do need a quality of life too.
Great subject...I have been suffering with UTIs for the last 3yrs. I'm 55yrs old, had a hysterectomy 5 yrs ago, 3 yrs ago I started with these utis the 1st I had at least 5 in one year, last year 1, and so far this year 2. My labs come back as an infection but I am extremely clear I shower twice a day because I am so scared. I had some yellowish discharge as well my dr looked at it and started it was a ph imbalance recommended replens. In taking the probiotics and it went away..🙏 however the utis are the problem now. I take cranberry pills every single day.😔
@@DrRenee thank you for replying so quickly..😊 will estrogen increase chances of cancer or cause to grow back fibroids? My hysterectomy was due to extreme case of fibroids which spread through out my bladder and intestines. It was really scary. Thank you.
Hi. No, the systemic absorption is negligible and not a risk. Women do get sepsis and can die from ITI’s so avoiding them is important for a healthy life.
Thank you for this post! I have been searching for a "menopause" group and somehow found this. I suffer from this and the thought of having an exam scares me. p.s. interesting that FB will not allow the word vagina yet allows porn and violence.
Hi, I am so glad that you found this and it has directed you to Jane's amazing group. The other group for menopause generally is The menopause support Network run by the lovely Diane Danzebrink. Together both groups cover everything you need to know. I would ask your doctor for vaginal oestrogen for 3-4 weeks before any exam to make it tolerable. My GP thinks I’m too old for it and I don’t think they fully understand the problem. Can you advise what else I can do?
Hi Rita. The first thin g i would do is add vagifem up to 5x a week to the oestriol cream. You could consider laser; mona lisa is very good but expensive. You are not too old for HRT but your GP. would need to do a risk assessment. HRT may help. If your GP doesn't help, ask to be referred to a menopause clinic. R

I think as i have had troubles for some time you must first clean up your diet. Your gut microbiome is what needs the fix. So modern food and drink not good. Whole food, low sugar, carbs and no booze and fasting. Fixes your HBP, BG . and amazingly plumps up the area. Coconut oil stops the utis and itching and dryness. Very soothing and naturally antiseptic. A bidet works wonders for older people as well to get good and clean. Straight up water. Too many chemicals will cause trouble....
@@pennyc7064 peoples bodies differ with particular foods. I cannot do wheat and most dairy. I wouldnt say i am keto, just not much starch. If you do grains they must be the whole grain sprouted preferably and cooked. So that leaves out breads, pastas as they are somewhat processed. Just try eating lots of vegetables, protein of choice, nuts, seeds, meat, fish, eggs. Fruit is good in moderation but not fruit juice. And the biggie sugar. I can do a bit of honey or maple syrup but not too much. Basically eat food minimally processed or not at all processed. But hopefully you won't get to that point! Good luck

Thank you ladies for such a very useful discussion. I was diagnosed with lichen sclerosus after ages as 3 GP’s didn’t recognise the condition. This combined with vaginal atrophy was blue murder. Using Vagifem now and waiting to see a gynaecologist
Hi mebbe I just noticed your comment on the Jane Lewis podcast and wondered how you were feeling now ? Did the VAGIFEM help you in anyway?
On April 30 2021 had my total hysterectomy. I had suffered from PMDD all my adult life, which was truly awful mentally. For years I begged my doctors to allow me the surgery. Now that I am suffering from VA I find myself wishing that this would have been something dr would have told me would happen without added hormones.
really seems like most doctors hate their female patients and love to send us away to suffer.
Have you ever done a video about Lichen Sclerosis? I do have this but truly don’t know much about it.
Hi 👋how are you doing?
How do we find your online group please Jane? And thank you for your book Jane so helpful
Talking was unclear and way too fast. The Closed Captions didn't help because they were FULL of errors. This looks important, but I didn't get much out of what little I understood. I suggest editing the Closed Captions to fix this video.
go to the settings.... looks like a round wheel, then SLOW down the SPEED of the Video
Thank you so much. I have been searching for answers for so long and now I will listen and follow your advice❤️
Thank you! I’ve just found you and am learning so much.
Vivian Lott aww that’s lovely. It’s a pleasure. Renee
Get another doctor or go online to get the cream or vagifem. There are loads of options and you don't need to rely on one GP nowadays.
I recently started having problems although I've been through the change for at least 10 years.
Thank you for this video!
Can you comment on the effectiveness of using DHEA suppositories?
How about a discussion for ladies with lichen sclerosus AND vaginal atrophy. That would be great
I'd like that now@54 that is where I am now
Always been told hormones, but what about all ladies with Lipedema that should avoid just that - what should we do?
Thank you so much for this video.Watching in 2021.Entering perimenopause and hating the symptoms.Haven’t been for my routine smear test in three years because of this. The part you mentioned about the elderly women and in third world countries maybe not having options is upsetting to hear.
Thanks for making this video.
It would be nost helpful for these women to actually answer some very valud questions from the viewers here
I am living this dream.
There are non-animal forms of Estrogen (Estradiol; Estriol; Bi-Est) available, iirc.
@@echase416 Thank you Emma for that info. I have been on the lowest dose...recently cut in half... for 5 months since I posted. My gynecologist says the Premarin Cream which I use has less risk for side effects...ie. breast cancer and so far it's working fine. I just can't stand using it because it is messy for days(21 days plus2 once I stop)Then no premarin for 7 days.
I am almost 70. I have made it thru until now au naturale. Is it too late for HRT? Vaginal atrophy is becoming a problem.
@@DrRenee I am in the U.S. This is .5 mg cream. I will be in contact with my OBG.
Brilliant so interesting , found this so informative 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you. xx
Thank you so much for talking about the ingredients in things. I would even add any silicone based and any preservatives to avoid.
Great video, is there more risks of using vaginal oestrogen if you have factor 5 v Leiden ?
Thanks, just ordered the book
Wow thank you!!!! I learned soo much
At this point I feeling very low as my oncologist does not think I should take estrogen cream but I’m so low I’m scared at what I should do
I take cranberry pills every single day.😔
I am sorry to hear that. Perhaps you should ask your GP for vaginal oestrogen as this is the only thing that is really going to help.
Thank you, I will certainly discuss this with my Dr. 😊
How can I obtain book by Jane Lewis
You had mentioned dementia and incontinence with constant UTIs. How can you help a person in the situation?
Thank you for this post! I have been searching for a "menopause" group and somehow found this. I suffer from this and the thought of having an exam scares me. p.s. interesting that FB will not allow the word vagina yet allows porn and violence.
Hi, I am so glad that you found this and it has directed you to Jane's amazing group. The other group for menopause generally is The menopause support Network run by the lovely Diane Danzebrink. Together both groups cover everything you need to know. I would ask your doctor for vaginal oestrogen for 3-4 weeks before any exam to make it tolerable. And yes, its fascinating about FB rules isn't it, we weer taking about just this evening over dinner. Thanks for watching. x
@@DrRenee Thank you so much :)
@@DrRenee can I please ask. Vaginal estrogen is it really safe? My mum had endometrial cancer and I am incredibly sensitive to added hormones such as the pill. I also had the contraception via injection and it gave me a breast lump. I'm looking at dilators too and there is vuva tech which uses magnets but incredibly expensive. Help.
@@panes840 Hi. Yes, all evidence say they are safe life long. And actually could be safer than not. Women die of urine infections for example which can be avoided with topical oestrogen.
Can we have some opinion on mona lisa treatment and also Tenscare pelvic floor vaginal probes please.
ooh yes, would love to... I have had it! Shall I do a whole vlog on it?
Yes!!!!!! Please do make a vlog on it. I’m a bc patient here newly married sexless marriage because of it
Yes please @@DrRenee.
What if the cervix was removed, can I still use the ring?
Your Amazing, I have suffered for 10 yrs.
With the help of vagifem I'm getting there.
Vulva external burning still very much a problem my gp just keeps giving me steroid cream
Wonderful conservation. Where can I find Jane’s group?
I found it! Thank You
I don’t understand the not washing part, is that just for the inside, the vagina or the outside also? I have IBS-D and some other fun issues that go along with that and I can’t see not washing. I have Bidet and must carry wipes with me. I’m on Estrogen 10 mg tablets and use Replense moisturizer but I still have pain with sex, it’s not as horrible as it was but it’s still uncomfortable sometimes I’m not sure what to do
Oh Sweethearts, so interesting! But so hard to understand because you talk so fast and sometimes together. 😢
I had breast cancer 2019 started Tamoxifen and instantly experienced vaginal atrophy. I was given hyalo femme moisturing gel. I started bleeding while being intimate. I was given ovestin cream. This works well i use it twice a week.
I don't recommend Tamoxifen for any woman. Shuts down your endocrine system.
Its not recommended lightly. It is given to women with hormone positive breadt cancer.@jessicahitchens6926
What about DHEA CREAM vs. Premarin??? Is DHEA safer ?
Pot of gold info here (as a Yankee, I struggled a bit with the accents).
Good grief. They are perfectly understandable.
are you saying UTI's worsens dementia? confusion and hallucinations ??
Yes
Are vaginal dilators needed in some cases?
What is the cream called please and will the doctor prescribe it for me?
It’s topical oestrogen cream which g in the U.K. is called Ovestin
How do I find your videos.
Do you believe Progesterone is required if on vaginal estrogen alone?
Just found this channel it’s great. Is it ok to drink alchol on vagifem? I don’t mean get. Drunk but 2 glasses of wine with a meal ???
What is your group called please?
Thank you so much for this video . It’s been so helpful. I didn’t realise there was so many things we could do to help with this problem. I’m 66 and have vaginal atrophy for years which can be very painful. I’ve been using Estriol cream prescribed from GP for about 3 years but still find sex painful. Would HRT help? My GP thinks I’m too old for it and I don’t think they fully understand the problem. Can you advise what else I can do?
Hi Rita. The first thin g i would do is add vagifem up to 5x a week to the oestriol cream. You could consider laser; mona lisa is very good but expensive. You are not too old for HRT but your GP. would need to do a risk assessment. HRT may help. If your GP doesn't help, ask to be referred to a menopause clinic. R
@ritabrophy3755...I'm (70) been having Mona Lisa treatments by my urologist for couple of years every 6 months to a year. These treatments work wonderfully. My insurance covers all but around $20 for office visit otherwise cost would be $300 and doctor charges $250 for procedure I pay out of pocket and well worth it.
Hi . I have a red ,sore, burning vulva . I can’t wear pants ,just pyjamas bottoms. When I walk I’m sore , £ my groins . Please advise me . I’m suffering . I now have anxiety because of it . Please help me . ❤️
I am using Immvexy vaginal inserts for estrogen. Also vitamin E oil helps a lot as a lubricant. Both prescribed by my gynecologist.
Women’s vaginas/bladders need Estrogen...
What diet would you recommend? I've read about the keto diet ..low carb. No grains. Is it good long term?
Keto works for lots of people even long term but not everyone.... whole oats are good for me so i cook the groats adding seeds, nuts etc for a hearty meal. Again it is what your body tolerates as well.
Progesterone rings the breast cancer risk?
Homeopathy is well worth trying as well. If you find the right practitioner.

What was the laser treatment like? Thanks 💕💕
It was bearable and definitely worth it!
Hi had a break from using estrogen topical cream ,but need to use it again, do i have to take it for 2/3 week again at the start, or can i just use it when i need it .
Gyno could not do a pelvic exam due to vaginal atrophy. Taking progesterine and estrodiol pills. Feeling really sexual as a side effect. Havent had intercourse for 38 yrs. Is there hope for me?
I would be really grateful if you could differentiate between the dryness/tightness symptoms of Lichen sclerosis and what you speak of. Would vaginal oestrogen help (post menopause), taking into account that metastatic endometrial cancer is present?
Thank you 🙏🙏
My (female) GP has been saying for the past 10 years "Well, you're....(insert age here)...now, you may as well just ride it out".
It’s difficult to know what to say; how compassionate! Tell her you don’t want to ride it out, or see someone else! Good luck. R
@@DrRenee thank you, I managed to get Ovestin cream eventually, it has helped a bit but still being woken by hot flashes in the night (am 58 now and they started when I was 46-7). I will try the other female doc in the practice. Thankyou for everything you and Jane are doing, I really wouldnt have known otherwise x
Unbelievable! One would think a woman might have a bit more feeling and compassion for these specific to women problems! But none of my gynaecologists here in Germany have suggested estrogen cream! I finally had to insist on it just days ago, after watching a video interview on TH-cam with an American doctor called Menopause Taylor. The lightbulb went on and I called right away and made sure I got that cream that day. Even just after a few days, the pain is less.
Hylouranic Acid works as well. Julva works for many woman.
I had a small stroke so had to come off oral hrt
There is no increased risk if people with a stroke history have transdermal HRT as a patch or gel.
@@DrRenee Thank you for your reply and the information re transdermal patch - I am seeing my GP for the first time today in many years! so will ask. My Consultant man at the Hospital years ago when I had the small stroke said no more hrt for ever and I thought I was lucky a lady GP let me have the hormone atrophy cream. Could be life changing. I had emergency hyst at 33 sub total due to placenta accreta which was undiognosed though I was having detailed scans for past baby no kidneys so how they missed the placenta I dont know. Thank you
Can you use oestrogen on the vagina?
TY
Thank you for your Chanel, I need all the information and support, I not only suffer from dryness but my vagina won’t open up when I’ve been trying to have penetrative sex with my partner,
Vitamin E, works for me
How do you apply it?
I cant walk !!!! or sit up straight 🥵
Homeopathy does actually work, just saying🤣
I wouldn't waste 4 years of college and 25 years of clinical practice on something that didn't work.
Hello 👋how are you doing?
What about a person who has catamenial epilepsy. So you can not do any hormones or cream at all. It will trigger seizures. Having that is bad enough now this. 🙄
@IrishTextileCraftsandMore...Maybe you can have Mona Lisa laser treatments. I have this done by my urologist every 6 months to a year. My insurance covers all but about $20 for office visit or else would cost $300 doctor charges me $250 for procedure I pay out of my own pocket. Well worth the cost not to be misable.
so you can or cant have sex with the ring ? you talked to fast
Sex is painful for me, I always have loved sex and orgasms but now I’m 60 sex is painful. My doctor wont give me any hormone therapy due to me having a heart attack due to a blood clot after a botched operation where I also ended up with asphyxia pneumonia
Hi. I’m so sorry to hear this. Your doctor needs to refer you to a menopause clinic and you should demand this. Not only is it safe for someone who has had a provoked blood clot to have vaginal oestrogen, with careful risk evaluation, transdermal oestrogen could be considered. A menopause clinic will do this. You could also consider laser (expensive but works) and the Linton are Jane is so well versed in. Yes OB is very good. Good luck x
Oh wow i had a past small stroke and was taken off oral hrt but was allowed vaginal cream. I did like the patches prior to this. I had hysterectomy at at 33 and am now 59. Stroke 2013
