His wife drove their daughter to school in a rainy morning (so they kept the windows closed) and both daughter and wife passed out and died on the road. For the longest time, the police did not know what had happened. They suspected the Mini Copper malfunctioned and created carbon monoxide that killed the two passengers. I thought the same thing. I once owned a house in Utah that had the furnace in the basement. My kids' rooms were downstairs in the same basement. It's a common practice in Utah build homes with an open basement then to remodel and add rooms later after purchase. The previous owner had done that. @katiekarakondis3348 People might choose not to hire a cleaning lady due to concerns about the cost, feeling uncomfortable with someone else cleaning their personal space, not wanting to prepare their home before the cleaner arrives, potential privacy issues, a preferance in doing their own cleaning, or a belief that it is unnecessary based on their lifestyle or living situation.
This is why, ladies, we don't lift or support a man while he's struggling. Because he will leave you (or kill you) when he's on top. I've seen it played out time and time and time again. Sacrifice yourself for a man, and he'll sacrifice you for another woman.

Unfortunately Cathy look worse from a heath risk perspective, I'm thinking type 2 diabetes and heart issues. But her weight gain could perhaps be because of stress eating if she was depressed (if she was also poor in housekeeping and spent money to excess). His complaints of her weight gain may not have been from a mean-spirited place. It's sad if they drifted apart if they may have cared about eachother but failed in communicate it to eachother in a way that could be received.

I'm frequently surprised how often people are convicted even when reasonable doubt clearly exists. In this case, police didn't even prove how the crime was committed, which seems like a necessary element for a conviction. No matter how reasonable doubt is explained to a jury, they usually end up using a standard much closer to a preponderance of the evidence.
It depends how they perceive (or feel about) the defendant. If they like the defendant reasonable doubt becomes no doubt allowed. If they don't like the defendant then, we'll he might have done it becomes guilty. This man was odd, kinda creepy, and said bad things about his wife in his journal (which probably shouldn't have been allowed in) plus he had an affair, although years ago(again probably shouldn't have been allowed in). When the jury doesn't like you you have to prove your innocent.
@ickess I could see that if he were just some guy who took crp 10 years ago, but a doctor? Especially a doctor who stuffed a towel under his door? Nah. He's guilty AF. 😀
Fact is with a body temp of 94.5 she was dead and gone hours before he claimed to find her and call 911. He did not find her alive, having a seizure and he didn't do CPR.
This is a tough one honestly, the jury definitely was wrong because there's a lot of reasonable doubt in this case. Remember it is always about what you can prove!!!
there are a lot of places where, if an affair is revealed, then that person is definitely guilty of the murder of their spouse. the jury will only need the thinnest of evidence and its a guilty verdict. (see, most of those 48hrs dateline cases)

Thank you for your analysis as always, Dr. Grande. The Cosa Nostra have a saying - 'silence is a friend that will never betray you'. If someone's contemplating this kind of spousal separation clearly it's best not to keep a bunch of written notes describing one's thoughts regarding said separation. RIP to the wife - Mark probably could have used better legal representation - prior to reaching the end of the video, I thought for sure the jury would have found him not guilty - even though as you opine, he was likely guilty in reality.
Anesthesiologists are the best profession that's ever happened to me. So thankful when I had both my sons. But wow the snoring...I wish he didn't write that but a lot of people snore I guess. I asked an ex if i snore, I think he lied to spare my feelings. I think I snore sometimes and not all the time though. May she RIP I think he married her for practical reasons and the initial practical realities of 1. Academic mutual aspiration and interest 2. Financial burden relief while in school 3. Reaching academic and home achievement goals Felt like love at the time. I suppose there is nothing wrong with those things actually except when there was little chemistry apart from those other things the 70 lbs was just too much for him. Honestly I feel the practical remedies his match brought to the table would be worth it.. But I don't think I'd sleep with someone 70 lbs heavier. So glad I'm not married....thats too much. I think I could love them still as a friend but not romantically. Im not sure I'd even pretend to be attracted I'm more concerned as to why. I think I'd be more focused on why my spouse gained 70lbs after marrying me. Once I figured that out we could move from there I can't live with a slob. She's not able to speak for herself. I would clean but I wouldn't marry someone I felt was gross. I've dated some nice guys and I'm glad it didn't work out in hindsight because their habits were just super messy. I wouldn't have minded domestic work back then but cleaning after the two guys I'm thinking of would have been grueling work, especially with children. No, they weren't gross. It's hard to explain.. But those two would have been difficult to live with domestically.

Mark used a tank of CO or CO2. They are and have been easily available to the public. Every fastfood/restuarant with a soda fountain has one. I cant believe the prosecution didn’t think of that seeing how the guy used gases all the time 😒 Very shoddy police work. They got lucky with the jury’s verdict
A tank of CO seems plausible if available to the public as you say. They use CO for soda fountains? I can’t think of a practical use for carbon monoxide outside perhaps a laboratory or as calibration gas for instruments?
To be fair in Lima most deaths are shootings. They have drug and gang issue in that town. Its nickname is little Detroit as it started decaying when the automotive manufacturers all moved out leaving a large percentage of the population jobless and depressed.
@@ItsKrma00 Ahh yeah you’re right, I was thinking about where he mentioned he currently lives, but that’s not necessarily where his accent is from. His accent does sound like it’s from the New England area, maybe New Jersey? Idk though 🤷♀️ I grew up in the south so I have a little more trouble accurately placing northern accents.
I don't believe that the prosecution case covers the 'beyond reasonable doubt' threshold. Allowing the government to get by with flimsy evidence to put someone away for life is a slippery slope.
He only had to leave a door open to the garage for the exhaust to make it's way into the house and be sucked up by the return air vents on the furnace. That's why the fan and towel. He filled the whole house with exhaust.
I remember this case... I vacillated about his guilt. Basically I thought the journal keeping wouldn't make sense if he was guilty, at least to me. Why would you document your extreme displeasure about your wife if you made a conscious decision to off her? Also like you mentioned there was reasonable doubt. The "soot" thing was silly because a relatively modern car doesn't generate soot... At least not to the degree that it would leave a "soot" on a wall. They didn't do a great job of explaining HOW this would be possible. Also as an anesthesiologist, it would seem, he would be privy to less convoluted means of offing her. Hopefully he was actually guilty but idk. This reminds me of a story I heard where a guy was leaving for work, as he is about to leave he realizes there is heavy snow on the road and decides to take the 4x4... He ended up mistakingly leaving the car running and remotely closed the garage door and went off to work and it took out his wife and kids. This may or may not be an actual story but because of it, I wouldn't want an attached garage (that isn't VERY thoughtfully ventilated) 🤔 Which makes me wonder if anyone checked the gasoline levels of the cars or the engine temperatures etc...
The way he threw rocks at Kathy about her inadequacies was very cruel and certainly unchristian. He wasn't a prize himself. If he hadn't been a doctor, he would have to pay someone to marry him. Pretty creepy looking to me.
How is that "unchristian"? I wouldn't want my spouse to stay home and do *nothing* while I worked 40+ hours a week. Especially as a Dr!! Add overspending and overeating (both of which are sins, by the way)?! Heck no!
She worked and paid for their living expenses and medical school for him. Takes 8-10 years to be a doctor. They should have worked together about her weight. She probably overate when he cheated. Idk. He could have divorced her and moved on. He probably thought he could outsmart the police. Idk how he pulled it off.
While automotive CO has a distinctive odor, most H/V/AC-adjacent industries introduce a chemical agent which adds an artificial and very unplesant "CO-smell" to the gas for safety purposes. The smell is close to automotive exhaust so that people make the correct association and get the hell outta there.
Some of this is correct, but a lot of it is incorrect, and I think it’s super important to give correct information on this. CO is the byproduct of combustion in both cars and gas utilities, but it has no smell. There is something called mercaptan added to natural gas to give it a very distinct smell; it is specifically designed to smell like literally nothing else so that people associate that smell specifically with a gas leak. The mercaptan is only in there to help someone detect a gas leak so you don’t blow your house or block up, but this is totally separate and has nothing to do with combustion or the formation of CO. The ONLY way to detect CO is with a CO detector since it is completely odorless and undetectable otherwise. Also, the smell of natural gas smells nothing like auto exhaust.
Once again, dear reader, we have come to that the difficult portal that sends our loved ones and ourselves to another "place." As was noted earlier in these reflections, "the bright light that was Kathy Wangler has dimmed in this Earthly realm." As Dayle Haddon (Max Factor, L'Oreal, Estee Lauder, Revlon), a wonderful bright light in this dank, dark realm provides a message for us. We must believe in the hidden glory that was framed by Kathy Wangler and all the good buying she did to support the American economy. Always trust the timing of these things, as Haddon taught. "Our coming, as our going, remain shrouded in mystery." Thank you.
Interesting that the state didn’t carry out surface swabs. I’m fairly confident that they would’ve highlighted aromatic hydrocarbons residue that would not be present in natural gas combustion by products but would be if it was from automobile fuel -that would’ve been a smoking gun if you excuse the pun that would have confirmed his guilt further and removed, any doubters?
With the amount of money he made you would think that a plumber would've been called to fix the damn toilet.
Seems like his wife's overeating was too much for a normal toilet to handle.
Though I think the overflow was fixed, but the stench from what previously had come up had seeped into the walls, floor so it still was smelling?
you must have missed the part where his wife sat around the house all day just spending money as a hobby
I've done many bath remodels, several with long term toilet leaks. Any subflooring needs to be mitigated and replaced if the odor is to be eliminated.

She worked to put him through school. Why didnt he hire a cleaning lady.
Or man
@katiekarakondis3348 People might choose not to hire a cleaning lady due to concerns about the cost, feeling uncomfortable with someone else cleaning their personal space, not wanting to prepare their home before the cleaner arrives, potential privacy issues, a preferance in doing their own cleaning, or a belief that it is unnecessary based on their lifestyle or living situation.

This is why, ladies, we don't lift or support a man while he's struggling. Because he will leave you (or kill you) when he's on top. I've seen it played out time and time and time again. Sacrifice yourself for a man, and he'll sacrifice you for another woman.
Me and my wife’s sleep pattern has greatly improved since we’ve started turning on Dr. Grande videos after going to bed. Thanks Dr. and bless you and yours in 2025!
That sounds odd. Yet, I suppose whatever works.
I sleep to these videos too
He has such a calming voice
It’s funny, I binge watch Dr. Grande and hang on every word when I’m not trying to sleep, yet I put his videos on when I’m trying to fall asleep too because his voice and delivery are so soothing. I’ll catch myself drifting off to sleep (which is the goal) and rewinding parts of the video because I missed what he said, thereby defeating the purpose of playing them at bedtime.
Mark looks unwell and sickly.

Thanks for doing this story I have always been on the fence about it all!!
She put him through school, bore him two sons, forgave him of an affair, but she gained 80 lbs and refuses to be his maid, so she must go.

@@BuzzyStreet why an air mattress? They couldn't afford a bed in the spare bedroom. That part really had me puzzled.

@michaelwaninger3155 that sucks
I agree 100% Dr Grande!
This is a tough one honestly, the jury definitely was wrong because there's a lot of reasonable doubt in this case. Remember it is always about what you can prove!!!
clearly it is not always about what you can prove but by the feelings you can give the jury as this conviction proves.
there are a lot of places where, if an affair is revealed, then that person is definitely guilty of the murder of their spouse. the jury will only need the thinnest of evidence and its a guilty verdict.

I think he married her for practical reasons and the initial practical realities of
1. Academic mutual aspiration and interest
2. Financial burden relief while in school
3. Reaching academic and home achievement goals
Felt like love at the time.
Im not sure I'd even pretend to be attracted
I'm more concerned as to why. I think I'd be more focused on why my spouse gained 70lbs after marrying me. Once I figured that out we could move from there
I can't live with a slob. She's not able to speak for herself. I would clean but I wouldn't marry someone I felt was gross. Mark used a tank of CO or CO2. They are and have been easily available to the public. Every fastfood/restuarant with a soda fountain has one. I cant believe the prosecution didn’t think of that seeing how the guy used gases all the time 😒
Very shoddy police work.

I don't believe that the prosecution case covers the 'beyond reasonable doubt' threshold. Allowing the government to get by with flimsy evidence to put someone away for life is a slippery slope.

The journal contents don't convince me of his guilt at all.
He only had to leave a door open to the garage for the exhaust to make it's way into the house and be sucked up by the return air vents on the furnace.
That's why the fan and towel. He filled the whole house with exhaust.
Thanks for sharing today
I agree with his assessment. I do not see how a jury convicted this.
This may or may not be an actual story but because of it, I wouldn't want an attached garage (that isn't VERY thoughtfully ventilated)
🤔 Which makes me wonder if anyone checked the gasoline levels of the cars or the engine temperatures etc...
I agree with Dr. Grande. He likely did it, but the evidence is sketchy
Heck no!

So he kept living in the house AFTER “the water heater” killed her?
To divorce is better than murder. Its not easy but at least you dont go to the pen.
I hate it when my carbon monoxide alarm goes off when I'm using the BBQ inside the house.
Yes and the carbon monoxide monitor is even more annoying than the noise from my generator.
When I worked in a hospital they called the anesthesiologists gas passers 😅
Interesting that the state didn’t carry out surface swabs. I’m fairly confident that they would’ve highlighted aromatic hydrocarbons residue that would not be present in natural gas combustion by products but would be if it was from automobile fuel -that would’ve been a smoking gun if you excuse the pun that would have confirmed his guilt further and removed, any doubters?
"What did the Anesthesiologist say to the Nervous Patient ??" . . .
"Don't worry, I'm gas-ing you up for a smooth ride."
Thanks, Doc!
