    Love her approach to the build. Don’t buy it till you really need it. I think it takes a way the joy of slowly looking forward to small new add ons as the years go by and you truly appreciate the functionality each add on brings to the adventure cos you know why you put it there.

    I generally don't follow the walk-around series, this one I really liked. It's well thought through, she wasn't trying to build a monster but a classy and capable vehicle. Beautiful...

    Good job talking about tuning! That's the perfect way to do it. And Jillian is soooo right! With instagram or fb even you look at other builds and think, shit I need that... When in reality your stock rocker panels haven't even gotten close to hitting anything yet.

    When we went looking for our truck, by the time we found it we called it the unicorn truck too. We are thinking of doing the Mojave in a week and we are like her, we didn't need a snorkle but we might need on for that trail. I respect her style. Thanks for interviewing a woman.

      You wouldn't need a snorkel on the Mojave. You can make it in a stock 4 runner and a tacoma. I did it 3 weeks ago

    really good walk around. best so far, as I share her mindset. modify only what you need. and make it in a clean way. the more stock, the less problems. I found myself struggling a thousand times over getting an aftermarket (steel or aluminum) bumper and winch. but you know what? better invest in tires and maxtrax, and learn to read the terrain. and put the money into an autarkic secondary (even third!) battery power supply with solar, a good quality compressor fridge, and other clever bits and pieces ..

  • @wrxFTWdey
    @wrxFTWdey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Very methodical process in modifying this vehicle. I wish I had the self control to do this, but in reality I see a part on someone else's rig that I like and I almost immediately buy it haha. I really like these new tacos, but they were out of budget when looking for a rig. I think tacos are a perfect balance between a daily and a rig, while my 80 LC is strictly a rig for me... can't afford to daily a vehicle that doesn't even get 10mpg. I daily my WRX and I absolutely hate being stuck in traffic with a manual trans so i'll just stick to automatic for my rig :D

    • @JillianRebekahMountainYot
      @JillianRebekahMountainYot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Uh oh, your "process" sounds dangerous ($$$) ;) The 80s LC are awesome!

  • @JLynnJohnston
    @JLynnJohnston 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm totally on board with the "upgrade when you NEED to, or when the trail rips it off" philosophy. At 6'2" of mostly torso, I went with the Chevy Colorado (Diesel) over the Taco's shorter interior height, so the comparative lack of aftermarket accessories has also kept my credit card in check a bit too... 30k miles in, and loving the California exploration!

    Excellent walk around - love Jillian’s truck! I feel exactly the same way in my personal philosophy of modification - just mentioned it today in a movie I was filming! Lift, tires, rack and sliders. My first four mods and only mods for quite a while. All because it was what I felt I needed for what I was doing! Needs evolve and so does the build! I know that "good" power, performance, and economy are all subjective, but as a 2017 4wd, 4 door, automatic Tacoma owner I would never advise anyone to buy a Tacoma. I've owned a half dozen trucks over the years (Fords and GMs) full sizes mostly and one Ranger. I do find the Tacoma to be incredibly lacking in torque. I'm still on stock tires. Because of this lack of torque, it needs more rpm to keep it moving which pulls the fuel economy down to what I averaged in my previous full size half ton trucks. This makes long excursions away from gas stations challenging without carrying extra fuel. Also it's only 1.5" narrower than my '97 Suburban, so it isn't any smaller or easier to maneuver on the trails. Don't buy into the hype and marketing of the Tacoma, like I did.

    I like manual transmission vehicles I’ve driven them pretty much all of my life as I was born and Grew up in Ireland and the UK and pretty much nobody drives automatics over there. However I’ve just recently bought a Toyota Tacoma TRD pro to turn into an overland vehicle. And the hardest part for me was to buy an automatic I was able to get a manual transmission as I was buying the truck Neil but in my research I’ve over landers all over the world there are slightly more advantages to an automatic than a manual transmission so that’s why I went with the automatic but it is weird I keep looking for a clutch.

    I'm a bit different in the philosophy except for the "rip it off so you can get a new one". First thing I did was bought a cheap '93 4 runner 5 speed and bought a winch on sale. I just got a tube bender and now I'm working on sliders. Should have done them first before smashing stuff

      I haven't run out of gas yet, but I will say that having extra fuel on the vehicle allows for more options. There have been a few instances in Death Valley where it has allowed me to risk taking a longer route...instead of the B-line back to the gas station.

      I used a cheapie come-a-long once that I kept in the back of my Jeep. The thing scared the crap out of me, I thought I was going to lose my fingers when I had to release the tension to reset. Hi-Lifts can be scary too, keep your head away from the handle, and if you're using it on a slider, open the door where the jack sits. I remembered to do that while jacking my Jeep ZJ, it saved me a big dent in the door when the letting the vehicle down.
      The winches have come way down in price, but unless you drive a Jeep Wrangler, it's the cost of the bumper that kills you. It's ludicrous how cheap/easy it is to put a winch on a Jeep.

    Stumbled upon this doing research on 3rd gen Tacos. What a great build! I really like her philosophy of only upgrading AFTER finding weaknesses and areas for improvement. It seems like people fall into the trap of seeing what other people are running, or all the cool stuff online, and go hog wild on mods and gear that they may not need. I also have experience in the Jeep and mountainbiking communities, and you see a lot of that there as well. It becomes more about the gear than just getting out there and doing it! (I DO like gear though, haha) The whole overlanding thing appeals to me too, I've recently learned about it, and saw a lot of it while I was out in Moab earlier this year.
    Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge there's not much opportunity to do that in the Northeast. I want to do some exploring and mountainbiking/camping trips in 2018, and if I don't get another vehicle by then, I'm actually thinking of setting up my '07 Volvo XC70 for it. At least I won't need a RTT, plenty of space to stretch out in the back of the car if I can store the gear/bikes on the outside. I've done a few tent camping/ biking trips in NH and VT over the past two years, and the XC has served me well.

    As an automatic owner, I have no issue with power. There are nanny features that can be turned off to give you all of the power you need. Also, going with the manual transmission totally deletes the Off Road package features such as crawl control. Crawl control is an AMAZING bit of technology. I do love that Pro grill upgrade. It's on my "wish list" as well.
