  • The Synth Project Part 2: VCO Experiments.
    The essential component to make a synthesizer is the VCO. Without the VCO there is no sound to generate, so that is the one element that is important to build.
    In this video, I test the capabilities of the integrated circuit ICL8038, a VCO on one chip, that seems very interesting as the base for our project. In fact, it can generate simultaneously three different wave shapes: sinusoidal, triangular, and squared. It can also adjust the duty cycle to obtain other shapes like the saw tooth, very important to generate sounds similar to those from string instruments, and has a very good stability.
    Let's see together what this IC can do and if it is worth to use it for our synth project.
