Mohanlal is truly a once in a hundred years talent. The man in his prime was an acting wizard🐐
In my view Iruvar is the greatest film in Tamil cinema. My reasoning ... this was about two real life chief ministers of Tamilnadu (bit of third one too). When this movie was release Karunanidhi & Jaya were alive and MGR was no more. If the movie didn't walk the tight rope .. it would have caused riots in the state or it would have watered down the story .... but it was so brilliant that both the party fans liked the movie. This movie can be a jump start who wants to understand Tamilnadu politics ... reality is very complex that 3hr movie. In story telling, this movie is in same level as Gandhi .. or bit more :-) because I saw these men in politics :-)
If you wish to see Mohanlal at the pinnacle of his acting, watch aham and sadayam. Sadayam especially.
What Mohanlal did with this role was mind blowing. MGR was the most enigmatic politician in India and at the same time one of the most distinctive and recognizable. For a hugely recognizable star to play another massive star itself was difficult but the way he played the motives of that character is pure genius. You can make multiple guesses to what the character is thinking at any point and all of it could be right or wrong
This is based on the real story of MGR(played by Mohanlal) and Karunannidhi ( played by Prakash raj)(Father of the ruling Chief Minister Stalin) , founders of the main political parties (ADMK and DMK) in Tamil Nadu.
Aishwarya plays Jayalalitha, the ex CM of Tamil Nadu. Kangana played jayalalitha in the recent movie thalaivi.

When the film came out I remember Mani Ratnam saying he will never work with Mohanlal again because his performance was so amazing he forgets to say "cut" during the shoot or he's then left struggling to make some big decisions in the editing room. Btw Tabu is pronounced "Ta-bu" and not "Taboo" 😀

The only legendary Mani Rathnam movie you have not seen is “Kannathil Mutthamittal”. Read up on Sri Lanka conflict before watching it. It has Prakash Raj in it in a small role. Will expose you to Nandita Das as well who is in the movie “Earth” with Aamir khan.
I like the fact that you are doing some research on movie you are reviewing. Most Tamil audience rejected this fillm theatrically primarily due to the censor cuts which impacted negatively the true depth of the stories of the both of these legendary politician that people were expecting..

The gradual change in character, or rather a very natural "character arc", that you guys were talking about is something I cherish when I watch grounded dramas! This is one of the reasons why "Godfather" is what it is! The transformation of Michael Corleone was so sudden when looked through a grand and wide picture, but so subtle and naturally gradual in its minutiae, that we never got bothered by it!
The same is the case with other great pieces of cinema/TV, like the transformation of Walter White into Heisenberg in Breaking Bad, or the transformation of Mohan Bhargav in Swades.
In order to attain the level of that subtle greatness, the writing overall, and especially for the character, needs to be so rich that none of the actions of the protagonist should seem "out of character"! This is the reason why Faisal from Gangs of Wasseypur is one of our favorites, while the actions of some of our cherished characters in GoT's last season is something we hate!

But having said that the top 3 actors of India is Kamalhassan,Mammootty and Mohanlal,handsdown. No2 place can switch according to whether you are Mammootty fan or Mohanlal. For me both are of same. You need to understand 3of them together the most national awards for best actor,and they have proven their acting plus they are super stars as well. And thats very rare.

@@Sunny-sc5vq Its not. I didnt say other regions there are good actors too but not on their level. You take up your favourite actor and compare with these 3 guys works. Just google search on images of the roles by these 3 you will get what Im talking. Other proof Kamal Hassan 4national awards,Mammootty 3 and Mohanlal 2. If there was no North Indian lobbying Mammootty would have got 4th but instead got Vicky Kaushal and Ayushman. The most number of national award nomination is Mammootty near about 40times. Just look at the data. Mohanlal too should have got more. Nasseruddin,Nawazzudin,Pankaj Tripathi etc are great actors but not par on their level. Just do a comparison research.

Prakash Raj is one of those actors who can play any role you throw at him. You guys have already reacted to his videos. He was the cop who was torturing Vikram in Anniyan (the split personality fight scene) and he's in Bhag Milkha Bhag as well. Can't recall what other videos or movies you've seen him in.

Tabu and Aishwarya just knocked it out of the park again later on in a yr 2000 tamil movie kandukodein kandukondein - yet another movie that is a must watch for the adapted story line from Jane Austen’s novel “sensibility” where they are at their absolute best, backed by A.R.R’s magical score!
And another movie of Maniratnam that according to me is either above or at least on par with Iruvar, Bombay and Roja - kannathil mutthamittal!

There is this little known Tamil film starring Prakash Raj called Sometimes on Netflix. It is one of the first regional films that I checked out on OTT. I really think more people should see it.

And its is notable that there is no similar frame(cinematography) in the whole movie.

It's a real life story three ex-chief minister of Tamil Nadu (prakash Raj, mohanlal, Aishwarya) in this movie who have done so much to the state. People have so much love for them if maniratnam had portrayed wrongly any one of them they would have burned maniratnam house. Maniratnam had lot of guts to make this film knowing the risk.
All Round work Direction, Screenplay, storyline , BGM cinematography, Editing,Art Direction.. sound design , Dialogues...😑👍👍👍💯
Aishwarya Rai was first booked for "Minsaara kanavu" and that was suppose to be her debut but she opted out of it for Mani Rathnam's Iruvar.

A comprehensive review of the film. Happy that you people had good subtitle and enjoyed the movie. Though this story is based on three powerfull politicians of tamilnadu, it didn't dramatised the incidents. Also it portrayed the emotions realistically as much as possible on screen, yet created a powerful impact on the viewers.
Great review. Prakash Raj (original name is Prakash Rai; Yes, same surname as Aishwarya as both are 'bunt', a caste of people from Mangalore) is a thespian. He is one of the greatest actors even as we cannot consider him in the same league as Mohanlal. A multilingual great actor who can carry any role with ease....

This movie is based on the lives of real life politicians of Tamil Nadu. Prakash Raj character is based on the late Chief Minister "Kalaignar" Karunanidhi, father of current CM MK Stalin. Karunanidhi was a screenplay writer known for his firebrand dialogues. In fact his name was used on posters to attract crowds.
Mohanlal's Character was based on the life of M.G.Ramachandran, another late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, popularly known as M.G.R. He was the Super star of late 50s, 60s and 70s.
Both were members of the political party DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam). Later when Kalaignar became the CM, he and MGR had a falling out, after MGR asked for a ministerial post but refused to quit acting.
Aaishwaryai Rai character is based on J.Jayalalitha, who became CM after MGR's death. But Rathnam killed her off in the movie because he didn't want to incur the wrath of JJ as she was known for "bloody retribution". She later was sentenced to prison twice in corruption cases and died under mysterious circumstances.

Korbin was right in pronouncing mohanlal's name correctly.rick's pronunciation is wrong.maniratnam is one of the great director in india who changed the flow of a movie,a pleasant change in movie making.a completely different genre which was embraced by us with open arms.his movies r more humane and realistic.😁

IMHO even after following you guys for 3 years, I still would NOT recommend Iruvar to you. In fact, I wouldn't recommend it to even Indians who don't know MGR and Karunanidhi (including mannerisms), and importantly, who don't know/understand Tamizh + the political context....critical aspects to understand (and hence appreciate) this film.
Totally agreed, it's unlike any commercial movie. It needs a lot of historical knowledge and cultural gripping to understand the essence of the movie rather it seems mundane
But without the historical background they r appreciative, imagine their level of appreciation if they knew

I never knew that you have so much hatred/dislike for anything South Indian particularly Tamil 🤨. i am not a South Indian, I'm a Bengali but I am deeply offended by that So bye bye to your channel. If you like Bollywood so much, who are nothing but copycats, it shows you have a crappy taste regarding music, Cinema and art and culture in general. Indian culture is never depicted in Bollywood films which the South Indian films do and you also don't have a clue about how much hatred and anger that is there among the Indians over Bollywood currently. Bollywood is dying and will be wiped out in near future.

Of course this is one of mohanlals good performance..but trust me he has done much more better acting in many other movies all of which are great... 'sadayam' should be a must watch film if you ask me which is his best performance.
