Hey there! John is developing his own game and plans to document it along the way. To follow his journey, check out his new TH-cam channel here: th-cam.com/channels/BzHdOnlwRvqfHL8vIHWO2g.html :)
No. Freaking. Way. I'm also starting my game development journey after over a month of contemplation (I'm switching career paths). Will definitely be closely following and cheering on!
I was really hesitant about the demon, so got into the albums Damnation and then Pale Communion first. Mikael's clean vocals and the music grew on me quickly. Then I tried the Ghost Reveries album. When the driving bass interlude grabbed me on the second track The Baying of the Hounds I remember thinking "why did I hesitate? this is the best music I've ever heard, all roads have led to this point" lol
🔥🔥❤Opeth❤🔥🔥 When I first heard Opeth I had to start with all clean vocal songs. The music was so good I didn't want to give up on the band, and now I love the 'demon' songs just as much!
I loved the Demon the moment I heard him because unlike most death metal I’d hear up to that point, I could understand him and even hear more nuances and changes in tone and pitch in his growls. Opeth…uh, forever!
Your face while waiting for your brother's reaction to certain parts of the song is a perfect example why I enjoy your channel so much. When I see your videos pop up with a certain song I have a similar reaction, anticipating how you'll respond. You (and your brother) are genuine! Your conversation about The "Demon" growing on you is precisely why I recommended 'Death Whispered A Lullaby' first. Appreciate what Opeth is capable of musically first and the Growl won't be so off putting.
Maybe if you stop to call it demon, but call it a dialogue your brother will feel more relaxed . Try the DraperyFalls song 🎵. Is the best song to make him appreciate growls, or reverie Harlequin Forest. If not growls, go with all stuff Face of Melinda song . Or Harvest or Burden. Kisses 😘
Girl the thing I love ❤️ more here is how much you care that your brother finally convert to understand growls. I love 💕 it!.. and you are right, he is wrong . But he will be convert I bet !.. nice video 📼!.. your favorite parts are also mine girls !.. 🤝 You have to relax more ❤️ Don’t be so nervous 💕 🙏🏼 🎵 just let it flaw and he will get it
Every time I hear this song I’m shocked I don’t revisit it more often lol, even though it’s always been on my ever changing list of top 10 Opeth songs, whenever I listen to it I think damn, what a great fucking song. I had a feeling your brother would have reservations about the growls, I do think some people draw lines regardless of how much they like certain elements of a song. So if he listened to a few Opeth songs and thoroughly enjoyed them musically but the gutturals were a deal breaker, he wouldn’t be the first nor last. I’m just happy that he enjoyed the music, that’s enough of a win for me, but I also don’t have any people in my life who also listen to Opeth so I understand trying to put Opeth on to someone in your life who actually might like them because who doesn’t want that? Lol
The Metalocalypse link is very interesting with this song - time for some trivia: Pickles in Metalocalypse is played live by none other than Gene Hoglan. Now if you were to watch the video for this song by Opeth, Martin Lopez had left the band more or less due to anxiety and Gene Hoglan had covered for him for a couple of shows so was the drummer in the Ghost of Perdition video. Pickles is the drummer.
I don't know what to say to convince this guy that Opeth is a great band. I'll tell my small journey: I was a big proghead, any music later than 1990 was shit lol, then I heard The Drapery Falls by Opeth, and my brain just clicked. It was like my mind just unfolded itself and was forever changed. This was almost 20 years ago. If I have any advice it is to keep an open mind. Maybe Opeth isn't IT, but one band or one song can change a life :)
Nicely done - really enjoying your Opeth reactions. If you haven't had much exposure to death metal, growling is such an 'out there' vocal style that it's difficult for people to get past it. Because Opeth's music is so interesting, it's great watching people delve deeper into their catalogue, going through a journey of disliking the vocal, to tolerating it, to accepting it, then to maybe liking it. It would be hard to imagine the heavy part of 'The Peel' coming in with his clean vocals! So thanks for all the effort in putting your videos together. On a side note, was amazing that your brother picked up on Metalocalypse. It is often thought amongst fans of the show that Toki Wartooth was based on Mikael Akerfeldt!
after seeing both reactions with your brother i think you should listen to "moon above sun below" together. Your brother will probably like it and you can show us how this song has grown on you 😀👍
John is so chill, not bothered. I thought the same about the drums sounding like YYZ in that little part. I was a big Rush fan starting in '80 (?). I feel so old, sometimes. I wasn't here when you first reacted to this song, I don't think. I believe this is my first listen. I still don't love the Demon, but I have come to accept him. Lol! I hope John is invited back for more reactions. I love the brother/sister interaction. : )
Metalocalypse! Lmao it was an adult Swim Show about a fictional band that also happens to be the most profitable business on earth or something despite being a bunch of meat heads. Their music is super dumb but it was super funny in the context of the show. They even had like a "metal opera" style movie.
Just found your channel thru opeth, absolutely love your taste in music and also your charm! I think you would love porcupine tree, let me get you on that train.. start off with "Arriving somewhere but not here" and "fear of a blank planet", maybe "the sound of muzak", ".3" and tell me youre not a fan after those.
It`s funny. In another reaction channel, Lost in Vegas (it is a good one, but your is Nº1), one of the guys said that an Opeth song had a vibe or influence of a Rush song. And they name "YYZ". But the Opeth song they were reacting to was Deliverance. And they did the same thing your brother did: "ta ta ta ta" waving their arms. Maybe John`s next Opeth song should be that one. Or one with not so much demon on it, like The Peel (I still hope you make a reacion with John on that one, without telling him if the Demon is in the song.....if he doesn`t jump off the chair with the Demon in that one, well....I think nothing could do that trick)
I think it's in the syncopation more so than those songs being directly inspired or influenced by YYZ. It's a very typical prog trope, but then again, Rush is a very influential prog band.
Is the "It's never sunny in Barovia" a reference to a D&D premade adventure and the show its always sunny in Philadelphia? Funnily enough I'm doing this campaign right now with some friends.
I couldn't help but laugh with the Metalocalypse comparison. That show is hilarious if you're familiar with metal culture. Also, I know a lot of people hear growling/harsher vocals and automatically hate it, but if you give it enough time it grows on you. I used to hate death and black metal vocals, but now I kind of love them and most of my favorite bands use them to some degree.
Hell yeah! Someone who actually played someone the studio version first instead of a live performance. So much craft missed out in the live versions. The acoustic layering with distorted guitars over the top that can't be replicated live. Hell even just any acoustic guitars since they replace them with a regular guitar which loses a bit of soul for the sake of practicality. Good job. Wish more people would start with the studio versions before jumping into the live versions.
Since you love exploring band histories, you can have a short comprehensive overview about the band in the following link th-cam.com/video/uwXU3imx2rI/w-d-xo.html
Lots of Nordic bands mentioned in this one; Opeth, Dead By April from Sweden and Apocalyptica and Nightwish from Finland. 😀 But we have some other good bands from Sweden you could do some reaction videos of. One would be anything by Katatonia and the other would be anything by Soen. Both have some history with Opeth.
And there is an awesome band from Norway, In The Woods. Although Opeth is my favourite band of all time, i think that Omnio from In The Woods is the best album i´ve ever heard
There is another Norwegian band I can recommend, Ihsahn. Opeth is also the best band I've ever heard and has been so for the last 20 years or so. I remember back in the early 2000's and me thinking they were another goth band, just knowing the name and logo. But one time I decided to watch them at a festival I attended and I was totalt blown away by their talent and the act. Been a fan ever since.
Kitty buddy had the best reaction! I hope he/she got some treats after? How about doing a all kitty reaction next time? Doesn't the presidents of the united states have a song with meowing in it? I love Opeth and your reactions!
It took me a while too. But as mentioned, the compositions are just too good to not be able to overlook the growling sections. I now think of them as a different character in the story.
I enjoy your excitement with sharing this band with others. You should do a new song for both of you. Moonlapse Vertigo and Godheads Lament from Still Life, April Ethereal, When, Amen Corner or Karma from My Arms Your Hearse, In the Mist She was standing, Forest of October, or Apostles in Triumph from their debut Orchid. You should check out some Katatonia though, also Swedish, Mikael sang on their second album, all but 1 song. But Hypnone, Heart set to Divide are newer and a good introduction. I'm sure others have ideas too. I'm pretty sure you would enjoy My Dying Bride too, Dreadful Hours, or Poorest Waltz are good introductions.
Lauren is already considering listening to My Dying Bride.....and The Dreadful Hours is my all time MDB favourite song, I hope if she ever react to that band, she starts with that one
@@fancotasargentina8165 I have a difficult time recommending their songs, I've been a fan since their 1991 ep, and could recommend songs from every album, even though they're all a little different, but I prefer Martin on violin Era, but those are also heavier songs.
Nightwish has the London symphonic orkestra in playback on ghost lovescore. This is 5 guys creating this wall of sound. And Floor the Singer in nightwish is living in Sweden, your brother was not so far of👍

I love the Demon, and while I’m happy to have the music from the Demon, I’m a little sad that he retired. I think I wouldn’t miss him so much if Opeth’s music was a bit heavier. (Still love the band☺️)
Although i love The Demon and miss him a lot, there are a lot of awesome Opeth songs without the Demon up until Watershed....from Heritage onwards, although they are still a superb band, I think they never reached again the beauty of songs like To Bid you Farewell, Face of Melinda, Harvest or A Fair Judgment, to name only a few songs without the Demon
