    Dear JCM
First of all, thank you so much for your excellent crafted videos of Led Zeppelin! Your work is nothing but astonishing and I really appreciate it! Since I discovered your channel I’m always excited watching a new video!

I’m a huge concert fan and when I like a band (or singer) I always look for live recordings ever since I was a young teenager! Though I like well produced studion versions of songs, I only admire bands (or singers) when they are able to generated a special atmosphere/excitment in concert. I don’t exspect them to replicate their studion versions as so many do, no, I like when the interact with the crowd and improvise with their songs or even rearrange them completely.
Though many don’t appreciate the ‘77 tour of Led Zeppelin that much, it’s setlist-wise my favorite tour and in my opinion so much better than the one from ‘75 (Robert’s voice & the setlist).
The ‘77 tour-setlist has so much to offer! From the very exciting opener TSRTS to the into of The Rover for Sick Again, Nobody's Fault but Mine, No Quarter (what a musical journey!) of course, the acoustic set, Kashmir, Achilles Last Stand, Stairway to Heaven (yes, I still like it very much after hearing it hundres of times) and last but not least the great finale. I listened to almost all available recordings (audio and footage) of the 77 tour.
Unfortunately, born in 1972, I wasn’t able to attend a Led Zeppelin concert and missed the whole 70s concert period. What a great rock music decade! Therefore I appreciate all the work & effort of countless people for preserving those recordings and making them available for a wide range of people. It always feels like a trip with a time machine and closing your eyes while listening those live-recordings you get the feeling of actually attending that very concert.
Now I’m awaiting your final episode of «The Making of 6 Nights at The Forum 1977» with great anticipation!
Wish you all the best & keep on rockin'!
    Pascal

I was lucky enough to see Zep in 77’ in San Diego! Obviously that tour had more ups and downs than any other Zep tour by far. JCM says Bonham was off the night I saw them but it was so LOUD I wouldn’t have known one way or the other. I remember many things about that show even though I was only 20 at the time. As the years go by I treasure the fact that I was lucky enough to see them!!

@JCM - Led Zeppelin Stores THANK YOU! This series has special meaning to me, I was at the second night, in really good seats, the best show I have ever seen! I could never understand why people said the '77 tour was terrible. I'm happy you picked the second night as the best of the six nights in LA!

What was so good about Zeppelin was that no two shows are the same, they always pushed hard to explore all the possibilities within the framework of the studio songs. I always felt their studio compositions were ideas for exploration when they played live.......they were one of the few bands that dared to take their songs to new heights live....Great series and here we have these shows showing they could deliver, they were such amazing musicians and really exercised their musical intelligence and ability to keep things fresh and interesting.
These are the best 1977 shows they did, the standout for me was the 25th....

Just wanted to send a thanks to you for making these videos. I found your channel a few months ago by chance, right around the time I began having a bad bout of anxiety and panic attacks. These series have been a great distraction for me, and a very entertaining and informative way for me to relax and reconnect with my love for music, specifically this band. I got into Zeppelin around the same age that you did, and they have always been a mainstay in my personal taste as not only a listener, but a player. It’s great to find people who really get it and come at this stuff with the level of enthusiasm and appreciation you do (the American Psycho pics you insert from time to time are hilarious and spot on 😂). You truly do justice to the history and intrigue of such a prolific group. Thanks for all your hard work, and keep it coming!

Great again, JCM. What a crazy tour 1977 was. Possibly the blueprint of how not to do it in terms of excess and the sheer number and dates and the length of the shows. The band must have been exhausted. It's a miracle Page got through all of it. The man looked sick again and again and again. This tour was good and bad, but is endlessly fascinating to me. As John Paul Jones said "“Even at our very worst, we were better than most people." The greatest band ever.

I've commented on other zeppelin videos all over the internet to say if you're not listening to the bootlegs and hearing all of the versions of this band you're not actually getting a complete understanding of led zeppelin at all. I have a book that details their every concert. And it lists which ones have been bootlegged and says which ones are good and I've checked them out and made favorites and they are incredible. This was when giants walked the earth.

I was at this show. It was my first night to see Zeppelin on this run… It was shocking how 80% of the magic was gone from the previous show I saw in San Diego in 1975. Even Plant mocked the crowd’s relative indifference during the It’ll Be Me encore “Oh wow, they’re recording again!” having grown accustomed to the thunderous ovations they received after every song during their previous tour.

    Hi Jose!
Even though I’m self-employed (sort of). I too, get a little depressed on Sunday evenings. However, one particular Sunday night in June of 1977, my local FM radio rock station aired a *Led Zeppelin Special* featuring a then brand-new interview with Jimmy Page!
Earlier in that month of June in 1977, my teacher & school class took a field trip to an amusement park, and the girl from kindergarten that I mentioned last week (the one that I most had a huge crush on) blew my mind - again...by wearing an indelibly, über-sexy, butterfly sleeve Kelly Green mini dress - à la English actress, Jenny Agutter (as her character, Jessica 6) in the 1976 motion picture: *Logan’s Run* directed by Michael Anderson. The film also co-starred Michael York and 1970s sex symbol, Farrah Fawcett. 🎡🎞🍃
I do regret not showing up for the last day of school - I was busy...(selfish really) listening to Led Zeppelin non-stop and staying up all night gazing at the stars with my high-power binoculars.
In between albums, when changing LPs - for fun, I would have the AM radio tuner playing in the background and would hear Elvis Presley singing. When I’m not listening to Led Zeppelin, you can usually find me listening to Steely Dan - I had rather diverse and sophisticated tastes - even at the age of 12. LOL!
PS: I don’t know if you can see it the same as I do from where you are in the southern hemisphere, but up here in the northern half - if you look up towards the north-eastern sky in the month of June, you will see - and please pardon the pun - an astronomical amount of stars in the sky! It is truly overwhelming! 🔭🌌🛸🛰🌠

    Hi Jose,
Led Zeppelin performing complete shows on twelve nights in June 1977 - for me, represents the 1970s to the max...if you count and include the six Madison Square Garden shows in New York - and speaking of which - check this out, Jose:
The first night in New York, 7 June 1977 is a performance for the ages that aims for the stars...and that sound - like OMG! - just listen to Jonesy play his Alembic electric bass guitar as he plucks the low E string during the intro to ‘The Rover’ as the song segues into ‘Sick Again’ - HOLY JAMAIS VU, BATMAN! 🦸
A little bit of trivia: Anita Pallenberg was in attendance that night along with her hubby Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones! Anita was a huge fan of the band, and I remember reading an article about her raving how great the show was in Rolling Stone magazine.
I always prefer to listen to the raw soundboard aka audio mixing console-sourced recordings of Led Zeppelin, because that gets you as close musically to the band as possible - plus, the bass, drums & percussion usually have the best fidelity with great live dynamic range and impact. 🎛🎚🎧
At any rate, here is the link:

'77 was such a special year and your vids are SO DAMN GOOD. Can I ask some how-to questions? Your harmony analysis is so impressive... assume you know the studio track cuz yr a guitarist, but how are you clocking the exact variations in the show? Do you play along til it sounds right, bounce it off friends, run it thru an app, and/or …? What's the process for sorting out all their spontaneous variations? Not to mention the comparisons to past performances, that's gotta be hours upon hours of intense work. The mind boggles at how long these eps take, what number would you put on it in terms of average hours?
BTW you should run it all by Jimmy, Bob, and Jonesy, they would love this.
Audience boots can be rough on the ear, us intermediate fans would love if you put the song title up during your show analysis, I personally miss several sets of comments just figuring out if it's the same song or not. "Anything but" is opposite of "All but," English is wack af. Kashmir is in 6/4 not 4/4 (two vids now!). Steven Seagal joke had me howling, keep the jokes coming! (PS I have that PF '77 Boston Garden boot on vinyl it's sooo tasty)

@JCM, I've read that Led Zeppelin performed a grand total of about 600 concerts. If accurate, this means that just this 6 night stand in LA stood up as a staggering (if you think about it) 1% of ALL their performances. Also, when you consider that the first 4 years were very tour heavy, the years from '72 through '80 featured only about 200 shows. Further considering that most of their early shows were done in small venues, it's possible that more fans have witnessed Taylor Swift live than Led Zeppelin! I'm not sure but I'm sure someone will do the math. Witnessing a Zeppelin performance may just be the musical version of winning a Wonka Golden Ticket lol.

The sit down acoustic songs at a live concert is another sign of how ahead of their time Jimmy page and the boys were. Just imagine that first time they played together with "train kept'a rollin" when they actually hesrd how good they were and saying, "man, we are going to make millions" then they all laughed saying "yeah right, ha ha"
But Jimmy was thinking yes, yes we are!.

37:30 - That "Layla" bit was awesome. Also reminiscent of "Sultans of Swing" and possibly "Expresso Love" also by Dire Straits. Wish they would have jammed it out a little more. Always wish they did more "minor funk". I also especially liked the touring map. Nice to see Chicago headline! I realized I just missed Sun King mention Chicago 1977, which was a little like Zep in ways, not having the extraordinary energy they had just a few years earlier. King Biscuit Hour 1974 for example. I love all the other context with other music, and what was happening in general. I will watch this again.

Yeah, it was not perfect, this was 1977 after all, but it's very good. I have a copy of the very bootleg you showed. Sundazed, that one I had to order from Japan. Robert himself has stated about the ‘77 tour that they were “showboating a bit.” Let’s face it, they were senior superheroes now approaching or just about in the latter part of their career at this point. You can just sense it. Critics love to put targets on them with their venom-filled pens but that’s what they get paid for. It’s kinda sick. Keep in mind that Zeppelin were made up of four geniuses who were in a constant state of evolution. The crappy critics couldn’t keep them in a box. Zeppelin always returned, delivered and conquered - sending the would-be journalists home…humbled. These Forum shows would’ve been the perfect ending for this ill-fated outing as we all know the unevenness - sadness of the third and final leg. We can just feel the pressure building…not knowing if Jim would be up to task or not on any given night. The D&A usage was rife and out of control this year and something eventually had to give. They always seemed though to deliver while in LA. At the end of the day…they were still taking chances and had some gas left in the tank at this point…but it was running near E…they’ve achieved everything already…where to go now?

Hi Jose! By a happy coincidence, YT recommended me a post today from a channel I didn't know, the person posted this show from June 27, 1977... recorded by the legendary Mike Millard. I loved it, and was glad to watch this episode next. I can't say which one was better, I usually say that Zeppelin reinvented themselves with each show, that was their magic. Thanks again for the amazing work, bye 👋

I'll never understand that a band with Zep's hefty touring income wouldn't spring for a state-of-the-art FOH sound system a la Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead and Zappa. More times than not you hear from those that saw them live, that it was "very loud" or "muddy, and bludgeoningly loud".

Let's be honest, Jose. TSRTS was good when it was all we had of official live Zep. But years later we got more official live tracks that were FAR better and showed the true sound of the Mighty Zep. PS DOn't think that Fifth of Firth got by me. It didn't ;)

The pieces that made the '77 shows seem excessive were the three showcase songs; No Quarter, Jones, Over the Top for Bonham, and Jimi's effect pedal noodling thing. A show without those three songs would feel much less excessive.

I concur! And toss White Summer….it was usually unfocused and boring compared to 69/70 versions. Scale down NQ to 12-14 minutes like 73. Also, have Plant do all the vocals for Battle Of Evermore….JPJ voice sounded terrible for this glorious song. Cheers

Much of the criticism of 1977 fully justified, solos much too long & self indulgent. Punk revolution under way in London & they should have realised times they were a changin'... Page (as per EVH) regularly played erratically. RP, JB, JPJ not as committed as previously (probably fed up with JP unreliability) and it shows in the performances. Destroyer bootleg truly dire (as with many of the shows). Great video series Jose. Many thanks

    72 A tier, 73 S tier, 75 B tier and 77 C tier. Kinda a toss up in some respects between 75 or 77.
There a a few things that really make up for the long uninspired solos. Healthy plant, monstrous bonzo but a stumbling page and playing over each other isn’t my fave. 75 was closer to 73 level but with a sick plant and stumbling page here and there .
