I was there. First encore I can ever remember at Newport. The normally subdued crowd was crazy! Was walking away at the end of his set when he came back out for Slow Train!

    (G) "Losing and old love ( ___ ) starting a new life"
what chord is he dropping to there? Is it some alteration of a G7 ?

Definitely a version of G7. I think he's playing the F on the D string instead of the high E string. He does this quite a bit actually.

Archie - since your comment starts with "(G)" I'll assume you're playing it either in B (with Capo 4) or just playing the song in G (which I like to do sometimes). Yes - right after "love" it goes to the G7 as a passing chord to the C.

Do any of the other band members get a chance to do a lead vocal or is it always Billy? And a bass solo?

Billy Failing, the banjo player does sing on occasion. The band is very good, however, Billy is the major driving force behind the amazing creativity and unique style of their music. Billy used to perform with Don Julin. If you have a chance check out Little Maggie with the two of them. Billy was about 23/24 at the time. I think there was quite a bit of conflict because Don ran the show- he was older and more experienced, however Billy was a break out talent and needed to branch out. I think that experience shaped Billy in such a way that he runs the show and things pretty much revolve around him. The other players have plenty of musical solos, but it’s Billy’s show.

That must have been annoying for the band to try and play that with the audience messing up the beat with their clapping.

I would imagine it's nothing but a pure blessing to have a crowd clapping along like that even if it's a bit off.

I was there. Great vibes all around, band included. I say whenever you’re moved by great live music to clap, shout, dance, scream, fart, whatever, then go for it! To suggest that Billy and the band were somehow irritated by clapping mid-song misses the point entirely and is just weird and anti rock ‘n roll.

  • @scottsweetmusic

Tbh that clapping …. Audiences shouldn’t do it, not everyone can clap timely. You can see BS pushing his IEM in further too

Camera man sucks at his job. Doesn't know the difference between a banjo and a mandolin.
