    Of all the photography channels I watch, yours is the best regarding the actual teaching. It's not made complicated, it's clear, practical and I just get it with your style of teaching. I don't know if you are a teacher professionally but you have a great, and I mean this in a sincere way, slightly goofy delivery, but I love it.

    I am very sure that even the folks in Fujifilm won’t know how much you know about their camera. Your videos are very useful to me as a new Fuji user. Thanks for all the effort you put in. Looking forward for more.

    Another great video! This is a really good thing to enable if you're starting out to get a visual indicator of how DoF changes in various conditions. Enable it, go out and move, change settings, and get a real time indicator of how you can change the look of your shots without having to take a load and review them later.
    It also reinforces how Fuji could do with overhauling their menus. The three things required to enable/change how the DoF scale performs are in three separate places! Surely they can all be grouped together given they're likely all going to be set/changed together?

    Another excellent tip. I have enabled both AF and MF depth scales on my X-Pro2, X-T2, X-T3 and X-T4. The best part of your videos is how clear you make the explanations. Many thanks.

    I am a young freelance videographer for a certain small company here in the Philippines. I have almost zero knowledge about Fujifilm except for the brand, of course it is popular, yet not affordable. All I use are devices that my boss let me use (Sony a6000, Canon 60D, and Sony a6300 if I am lucky enough). I am saving up to buy a 2nd hand XT200 (big amount for a youngster like me) because I was watching a lot of videos about it and just a week ago, I found your channel. I watched a lot and learned a lot from you but I realized that you're mostly on good tier cameras. I hope you will do reviews and lessons on the low-end of the market. I am not in good terms with my boss (dude even wants to decide on what camera I buy) and is about to leave the company, and I badly need tips to start. Thank you. So much love for your channel. 🙏🏻💖

    Thank you for all of your videos. They are making my life so much easier. Anyway and interestingly enough, I wasn't able to the DoF scale when I tried to set it up. As it ends up, I had the screen icon set to large and that was preventing the scale from showing up. Once I retirned to the standard size icon, the scale appeared.

    Thanks for this vlog Chris, I have just purchased an xt4 and am in the process of setting it up to match my xt3 and completely forgot about the depth of field indicator. You just saved me a lot of time searching through menus looking to activate this. I managed to get an xt4 at a really good price. I had resisted buying it thinking it was not a big enough upgrade from xt3, but wow was I wrong, ibis has transformed my older non ois lenses, the battery life is made in heaven, focus seems to be snappier, flippy screen and there is more !

    Great video! I really love this feature and (having come of age when film and manual focus rings were the only options) do use it constantly when manually focusing. Still, I also find it useful with autofocus to get a decent indication of what distances/objects are in sharp focus vs. those areas in the frame more likely to render.. wait for it.. CIRCLES OF CONFUSION.

    Hi Chris, I'm a newcomer to Fujifilm and recently purchased the XT4 with the 16-80 kit lens along with the 35mm f2. I have been following your videos and am grateful for the way you present them, very useful for me as a new user. I followed your instructions for the depth of field settings but can not seem to make them show in the viewfinder/screen. Is there a setting I have previously made that would not be compatible with the settings for depth of field to show? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
    Kind regards,

    Thanks again for a very informative video. I could not see the distance scale until Large Indicators were turned off, did I miss that point. Also yes it works on my XT4 when in manual mode but although the distance indicators appear in the LCD/EVF in S or C there is no distance mark or blue depth showing. It doesn't seem to matter whether the AF box is checked in Display Custom settings or not. Any thoughts? I do enjoy you channel which been a great help since I moved over to Fuji. Thanks again.

    Thanks for the explanation. A topic not really close to this, but I think you have a good answer. I have not found any video of yours that explained it at least? Full frame vs crop, what does it actually mean, and why does it matter for me? AND on lenses that are for cropped cameras they also say this is equivalent to... and then a higher mm after that. Does it really mean that you get in closer with a lens for a cropped camera or what is this. Might be a video there:)

    Just to confirm, the depth of field distance being registered is the distance between the sensor of the camera and the in-focus item, not the distance from the end of the lens to the in-focus item, correct?

  • @martincoward512
    @martincoward512 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    OK, after some more work I see the problem. I have set up my XT4 to use "back button" focus. This produces the desired result in Manual but if the shutter release focus (half press) is set to off so focus lock is only set by the back button then it doesn't work with mode S or C. To see the focus point and depth of field you have to set the shutter release to focus on (for half press).

  • @TheCogitech
    @TheCogitech ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a slight correction. The difference between film and pixel basis has much more to do with image size and viewing distance, rather than prints vs. screen viewing. It just happens to be true that typical print sizes are relatively small compared to the huge monitors that we use today, and we have a bad habit of pixel peeping. Smaller JPEGs on Instagram, etc. are more comparable to prints in this respect. In other words, there are definitely certain situations in which film basis DoF may be appropriate in the digital realm. There may also be situations when pixel basis may be more appropriate for some print work (such as extremely large, hi resolution prints).

    DoF display (blue bar) does not appear if focus is decoupled from shutter (half-press), as in BBF. In BBF, pressing the AF on assigned button doesn’t cause blue DoF to turn on. Compromise, compromise. (Wish all lenses had the old printed DoF scale.)

  • @ben_blair
    @ben_blair 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi... I watch and enjoy your videos but I wanted to point out something you may have got wrong here. When you described "film" vs "pixel" basis for depth of field you described the pixel basis as being for "screen viewing." Actually this is incorrect. Film basis is what the eye sees either in a print or on a screen. It means the photo is acceptably sharp for that entire focal depth/range. "Pixel basis" on the other hand, describes what it would actually mean if you were to zoom in and pixel peep the image - that is the range that will be totally crisp, sharp, and in focus even under magnification at the "pixel" level. This is why that focal depth is much shallower than in the "film" setting because the latter describes acceptable sharpness for viewing purposes (as in a print or screen) whereas "pixel basis" is the actual depth of field that is completely in focus when enlarged and viewed right down to the actual pixel level. Hope that helps and keep up the great work!

    Well, I watched several times, but have not been able to see this DOF indicator appear. Is it possible that the X-S10 is missing this feature ? I have set up AF using tips from your other videos and all good on that end.... I even tried to set up the "preview depth of Field" p 85 of the User manual to the FN dial, was not able to find PDoF as a button option.

    • @davidbrumbaugh704

      well, um, i noodled about until trying manual focus mode that there is was. Sigh.. Reminds me of a course in expert systems, where there are leaps in the details that an expert provides, because they just make logic jumps that the less indoctrinated can't quite duplicate.

    Great video. Thanks for digging into this function of Fuji camera.
    However, I do find that the depth of field(Dof) scale to be "very incorrect"! I have X-H2 with XF27mm R WR F2.8 , both with latest firmware. I set the aperture at 8.0, focus distance at 3 meters, this should give me about a total of 6.8 meter Dof, things from 1.8 meter to 8.6 meter should be mostly in acceptable focus. But on the X-H2 Dof scale, the blue Dof scale would only give me about 1 meter Dof, roughly from 3 meter to 4 meter. Even if I set the aperture to 16.0, the X-H2 blue scale would only give me 2 meter Dof, from 3 meter to 5 meter. This is not acceptable. Also, the white distance indicator is not reliable.
    Lots of disscusion about this issue on Reddit, and 95% of the users suggest this function to be "turned off", because it's so incorrect.

  • @jacob.munkhammar

    Thanks for a great channel!
    On the topic of depth of field: I am struggling to find a way to use the focus peaking (I use red) to show DOF. While focusing, manually or with back button, the aperture always stays wide open. The aperture is not activated until you half-press the exposure-button - and at that moment the focus peaking turns off. I find this annoying, and somewhat pointless. After all, I want to check the focus *with* the chosen aperture. Preferably *while* I adjust focus and aperture. Is there a way to fix this? (PS. My eyesight isn’t what I could wish for, so for practical reasons, I rely heavily on focus peaking. I use the X-T3 and X-E2.)

    • @jacob.munkhammar
