  • On this episode of Stay Tuned - after sitting for 30 years, my 1974 Street Freak Firebird is up and running! We put together a killer 462 Stroker engine from a 1975 smog engine, cramming it full of the best parts from Butler Performance, and it’s time to see what it can do! It’s a time capsule from 1983, the raddest bass boat flake paint job, velour interior and 8-track player. It’s been a huge amount of work to get to this point but I’m so stoked this thing is a runner!!

    If you want more room for those valve covers, look into a hydroboost setup. They work great and don't take up as much room as a booster, plus no need for vacuum.

They use you up for a few seasons and then leave you out in the cold, Tony found it out, Steve Magnante found it out , they just stabbed Fred from Dirt every day in the back , who was been with them since day dot and the others are going to find it out soon enough too. Hey Tony, good to see you on the Hagerty channel and making progress on the Firebird. Regarding the 400 engines potential for horsepower. If you made 390 crank hp, you can guesstimate the head intake runner cfm with the formula 390/8/.0257 = 190 cfm. If you look on line you will see that stock 1975-79 No. 6X (1975-76 400/455 & 1977-79 400 D-port Date cast: 0185 Grade: 2 Valve sizes: 2.11/1.66 cylinder heads, were shown to flow about 167 cfm at 0.600 inches of valve lift. So the power measured at the dyno was actually very good. Your head porting seems to have helped. Those heads are not going to make the kind of power you were looking for. Most passenger car engines over 450 c.i. struggle with getting enough air through the cylinder heads to make 500+ hp because they were not designed for that purpose. They can't move 350 cfm of air because the motor was not meant to burn the gas needed to mix with all that air and make 500 hp. The stock iron heads, even with your mild porting are going to be holding you back, even with the blower. If you can get flowbench numbers for the head this formula can estimate hp potential, intake cfm X 0.257 X 8 = hp potential. If the head could flow 240 cfm your potential hp is still only about 514 hp, but the dyno testing suggests you are not there.
    A 6-71 blower should be good for about 35% hp gain at about 8 psi on pump gas. With 15 psi and E85 maybe you can make 45% more power. If you want to make more than 600 hp as planned, see what you can do to increase air flow into the cylinders. If you could find a set of 1969-70 NO. 44 Ram Air V Tunnel Port heads with Valve sizes: 2.19/1.77, which are suppose to flow about 233 cfm at .600 lift that would be great! I'm going to guess these are very hard to find and probably as expensive as aftermarket aluminum heads.🙂

    • @hayden6056
      @hayden6056 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if it's butler 6x heads their porting starts at 240cfm and I think they can get close to 300 with everything they can ground out.

    Excellent content! I hate to say it but you need either factory round port Ram Air heads, or Edelbrock aluminum heads to make the numbers you're looking for. The Husbands 72 T/A engine
    dynoed at 480 hp at 5,500 540 peak torque with ported 7F6 heads (280 CFM intake) and a roller version of the factory Ram Air IV camshaft. The big crank mains do keep the revs down.
    The engine looks stock except for the single plane intake. It even made those numbers with the Ram Air exhaust manifolds in place. No headers on that car.

    • @mattspontiacta
      @mattspontiacta ปีที่แล้ว

      The Pontiac factory head is the choking point not just the exhaust port. It’s late 60s technology. Ran great in there day but obsolete by todays standards. The out of the box Edelbrock heads are only good for 260 cfm. This engine or any engine over 400 cubic inches needs 300 plus cfm to make power. A Chevy LS 5.3 head flows around 230cfm and it’s only 327 cubic inches. 455 ci needs 300 cfm plus to make decent hp.

      @@grandmasmalibu - Exactly what I was thinking. If Tony wants to retain the ‘70’s vibe (don’t blame him!) just grind off the manufacture name and paint them to match the engine.

    I have a bone stock 69 Poncho 428 short block, with a Ram Air 3 top end. All factory parts, and 95000 miles on it. Mine did 295 HP and 340 torque on the chassis dyno through a 700R4 that was hurt. I guess I'm doing pretty good. Love the show Tony. Get that blower on there ASAP!!

      @@dipstiksubaru3246 Mine is kind of a low mileage sentimental survivor so I'm leaning toward just working with what I've got for the most part and was hoping not to pull the motor or get in to the bottom end. I was really just trying to compliment them on what it was making. But I wouldn't mind a set of those Butler high perf head templates 😄

    21:10 THANK YOU TONY!! I hate watching people on TH-cam and their terrible Dyno etiquette. Never stand in front or behind the car when its doing a pull! and always stay clear of the rollers at all times. Some people will learn the hard way when a strap breaks or the car blows up and throws something behind it.

    • @StayTunedTA
      @StayTunedTA ปีที่แล้ว

      No sweat, dynes are VERY dangerous and need to be treated with respect. You can absolutely get hurt or even killed in an instant.

    I went from a dialed in factory front disc rear drum vacuum Booster brakes on a manual trans 68 Camaro to a Wilwood full manual master cylinder setup and it stopped better with the Wilwood manual than it ever did with the factory vacuum Booster brakes. I was happy with the factory vacuum setup... the only reason I replaced it was to gain room and incase the engine ever died hooning the car around or at the big end of the track it would stop the same. No regrets.
