Farruca is the best flamenco form for guitarists to start with - it's rhythmically simple and familiar, and generally uses chords you already know. In this guitar lesson, I break down the elements of farruca using the two most common keys of A minor and E minor, and give you common embellishments you can add as you learn this form. Once you can play farruca in these 2 keys, try learning an excerpt from a famous farruca by Sabicas: "Con Salero y Garbo."
*If you want to get the full tabs of the Sabicas farrucas “Con Salero y Garbo” and “Punta y Tacon,”pdfs and play-along practice videos for everything you see in this video as well as access to all my courses, tabs, practice materials and more, become a member of my Versatile Guitarist Academy.
0:01 Farruca intro example in A minor
0:17 What's coming up in this video
0:42 What is a flamenco form and why play Farruca?
1:10 Starting out with the basic chords in A minor
2:39 Adding embellishments to the chords
3:53 Traditional concluding phrase with hammer-ons and pull-offs
4:16 Play through of the whole form with embellishments and concluding phrase
4:40 The more advanced conclusion I played at the beginning of this video
5:32 Similarity between farruca and Argentine tango ("La Cumparsita)
    5:47 Adding the 4-stroke rasgueo
6:34 Farruca in E minor: the basic chords
    7:55 Adding embellishments
8:42 Let's try to play an "actual" farruca from the great flamenco guitar master Sabicas
9:08 Sabicas farruca excerpt from "Con Salero y Garbo" performance with tablature
10:09 Breaking down the Sabicas farruca: 1st section chords

Dear Scott, is a real pleasure to have met you here in TH-cam.
Your tutorial and educational videos are the best.
I've been playing guitar for about 4 years and lately starting with flamenco.
It's been a game changer in the feeling of how I feel and create music.
In just a couple of days your videos have helped me a lot in this, difficult- frustrating yet rewarding world of flamenco 🎉
    Thank you so much.
    Namaste

It always amazes me how much colour sounds nylon string guitars have. Purely acoustic. No battery of effects, amps, electronics. Just you. And your guitar.

Thanks so much scot, i have just been venturing into this area of Furruca with Raseudo and you have helped me clear up a few things, rythum i feel is an essential component to adapting to this style and its many forms. And you've been great in helping me understand that, here in Ireland everything is mostly traditional Cèile music which has its attractions and is nice but there isn't much in the way of spanish guitar music unless you pay for private tuition. I make note of the lessons you teach and you also broaden my understanding of the music table, so, thank you so much for your time and energy.

Presented in a well paced, clear and understandable fashion. I will qualify the “understandable” and say it would be helpful to have some previous exposure to Flamenco. All in all a really nice lesson.

Pretty much for the last 3 months I've been working on the Farruca in Em without any previous experience with picado, and very little rasgueado. The arrastre was just a really nice bonus treat. Now I can move up to some other things. This is a very rich and full video...thx!

This kind of music has fascinated me since childhood.
My neurons start going at the speed of light.
Making improvisation so easy, so natural
Now, I've found a good teacher...
    Will work hard on technique...
Which, I have sadly, been neglectful.

I like that guitar. Were the strings new when this (cool) video was recorded? I actually use a Raimundo Thu Le signature which doesn’t sound at all like the classical guitar its supposed to be, but it is distinctive and closer to the Flamenco sound than a Flamenco (study) guitar I have from the same luthier. So I am looking for a reasonably good one. Yeah that one sounds perfect.
