    Lol, in the 2600 version of Rampage Ralph's name has an exclamation point, like the programmers were touting the fact that you could play him on the Atari and not the NES.

    I love that Atari had the audacity in their advertising to act as if they could compete head-to-head with the NES, even claiming superiority, as in "who wants to play with a robot?"

    More apt comparison between versions on both Atari 2600 and 5200... or even 7800. Considering that Atari themselves used the upgraded Pac-Man on 5200 to sell the new system.

      Iraijus one has to bear in mind that the two consoles are a generation apart from each other. Also the Atari VCS/2600 was a fairly early second generation home video game console. Thus it's not likely to compare/contrast all that favorably to the third generation Nintendo NES, but it's games were mostly good for their time.

    Donkey Kong (as well as Jr and many other arcade ports) were made for the 2600 by Coleco, not Nintendo, as you stated. Nintendo was exclusively an arcade manufacturer at the time.

    I had a lot of the Nintendo games for Atari, well, Donkey Kong, DK Jr., and Mario Bros. I think Mario Bros. was a silver label game and my copy of DKJ was a red lable, but I think that was a re-release from the Coleco version. By the way, it did have three levels for DKJ (omitting the one with the spring board and the dive-bomning bird) - the DK cart did only have the two stages. They were all kind of rough but I played them all - I mean, it's what I had, right? Man, when that NES came out I was blown away!

      @thorstenguenther 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nuntendo licensed the cinsole rights to Coleco, and the home computer rights to Atari, to be precise. So Atari wrote the 400/800 vesions of Donkey Kong, Donkey.Kong Junior and Mario Bros.

  • @Trusteft
    @Trusteft 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    While I never played most of these games on the 2600 or NES, I think the 2600 did a good job in most of them. Even Rampage. I mean, even had the helicopters flying in the background. That's attention to detail! Which yes the buildings lacked, but I am sure it was as fun.

  • @BBfanfun
    @BBfanfun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    i liked the Atari but geeze , NES just does it all better.
    A fair comparison would be 5200/7800.
    maybe Intellivision (for color) or Colecovision ?
    the SMS vs NES has been done a billion times over, but it's kinda inevitable ?

    • @StoneWT
      @StoneWT 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I was shocked when I saw YT videos and bought some Atari 2600 collections. I loved the games at the time, but they are just god awful nowadays. I felt ripped off when I saw how the Intellivision and Colecovision systems were clearly superior. Atari could have reigned supreme if they had gotten off their lazy arse and introduced the 5200 a year or two earlier and made it compatible with the 2600. That and focus more on games with longer experiences for the home instead of just arcade-like games. The NES was the clear winner in that department.

    • @lazarushernandez5827
      @lazarushernandez5827 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StoneWT It was usually Intellivision and Colecovision who would respectively release their titles on other consoles and whether it was intentional and/or limitations of other hardware, their consoles version always looked better ( I don't recall many Intellivision games going to Colecovision however). They both had 2600 adapters as well, inviting those users to migrate.
      Who knows what they were thinking back then. The 5200 could have definitely been released earlier than it was (1982), as it pretty much had Atari 400/800 computer parts underneath (and yet wasn't compatible them either); the VCS came out in 1977 while the 800 showed up in 1979. I'm guessing Intellivsion (which came out in 1979) didn't make a huge dent into the 2600s market share. I do know that at the time their console and home computer branches were separate entities and console licenses didn't transfer to computers and vice versa (for example at the time Coleco had the Nintendo license for console ports of Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, while AtariSoft held the computer license for those).
      I chalk it up to console makers not knowing how long they should support a console/platform before phasing it out, not quite realizing the importance of exclusives or IPs (some did, Coleco never ported it's games to the similarly powerful 5200), and other lessons that we take for granted nowadays, a lot of uncharted territory back then.

The Master System version might have better "graphics" (subjective) it did not look as good or arcade correct as the Nes.

    Cool showcase of games, Sir Riggs. I never owned an Atari but recognize some of the games from the C64 and IBM DOS days of gaming.
    Along those lines as a curiosity you should check out the DOS 3D reimagining of Pac-Man called 3-Demon. It was actually an awesome primitive game (and a little creepy to seven year old me!)

    Donkey Kong JR for the 2600 actually has 3 screens. But it still sucks because it gives no points for jumping over enemies and no fruit to drop on enemies. I hate the Atari 2600 Donkey Kong as well. If Coleco had added just one more screen on Donkey Kong, I would've been happier.

    It's funny to look at this and all, but to ridicule and make fun of the 'Graphics' is just a Why? The NES was at least a generation after the Atari 2600. Of course the graphics are going to be better. It would be like saying lets looks at the NES graphics compared to the SNES.
    A better comparative would have been the Coleco or Commodore 64 vs the NES. I just gave you a future episode. Your Welcome ;)

    The name of the clip is maybe a little bit missleading....
    Technically these titles are not "NES Games". These Games are clearly Arcade Games - ported for both consoles.

    I remember when my dad went to buy our Atari. It was an upgrade to the Coleco and Intellivision, which I had been playing. And when I got home with my mom, my dad, a man who never played a video game in his life before or since, was sitting there on the floor playing Pole Position for like two hours straight, refusing to give up the controller.

    I dont understand why china dont make atari 2600 console. They only make NES, SNES, Famicom and Genesis console. And gameboy too.

  • @wisteela

    Klax was indeed the last game released in Europe.
    Space Invaders was on the Famicom only. I think it was because they thought it was too old to release for the NES.

    I first played that pac-man on Atari at my uncles house. I enjoyed it even if I thought it was weird. Odd they use the sound effects for that in a lot of tv shows. Atari DK was worse though imho.

    You got Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-man, but forgot Jr. Pac-Man
    Defender II on Atari (Also called Stargate) is very good with a second controller, as you have smart bombs, warp, and invincibility mapped to the fire, up and down buttons of the second joystick. Lots of people made their own 3 button foot pedal for this. I personally made my own arcade joystick with the 3 buttons added in.

    Karateka, Q-Bert, Superman...does that one count though? Pipe Drean, Gauntlet, Frontline, Ghostbusters, Galaga, Othello, Spyhunter...there are other titles as well but I think they are completely different games though. Ghostbusters and a few others I mentioned might actually fall into that category too.

    I think it's unfair to compare the NES to the atari 2600. A more fair comparison would be the atari 7800. There are some very good ports on that system. Joust, Ms. Pac man, and Xenophobe just to name a few. Some, in my opinion, are better than their NES counterparts.

  • @john2001plus

    NES Donkey Kong is terrible. The timing for jumps was way off. The 2600 version was unplayable. From what I can tell, the NES version of Donkey Kong Jr. and Mario Brothers are good.

    Some of the games that were on both I enjoyed on the Atari so I skipped the NES versions of them and don't regret it. Two being Popeye and Defender. I have very fond memories of them. I actually might have had the world record of Defender because one day I was in a zone and didn't stop playing it because I wasn't dying so I went all the way to level 100 and I guess it just starts you back over to level 1 after 99. I gave up after getting there but my score was probably so high and back then there was no way to record it but I should of took a picture cause now no one would ever believe me. lol

    A lot of people say the Atari 2600 version of Pac Man was trash, which, yeah, it's a pretty shabby looking port... but I think it's the most Atari 2600-ish game there is. The simple look and more simple game design, the sounds, it reeks of that true essence of Atari gaming. I freakin' love it.

    Its become a fad to rip games like E.T. or the original Atari 2600 Pacman but back in the day everyone would crowd around the TV to play Pacman. So many movies use the sound effects from the original Pacman.
