LPT for birds: Cover the cage at night and it will cue their internal clocks to sleep; otherwise they might carry on long into the night. As long as a light is burning they think it’s sunny and time to be wide-awake and lively. Yes, they’re quite noisy creatures, always chattering their praise for life and companionship. The pattern of the squares layer out already had the pattern stretched out!! It only called for 2 squares above the neckline, and then connect it to the back!! That’s why your neck line was so low!! I hope this helps

The neckline turned out to be a lovely “sweetheart” shape! Really, very pretty! I wonder if maybe a few rounds around the neck with decreases before you put on the collar would’ve helped. I’m not sure what that would look like but it would make the fit better I think.
I like how you changed it up and added different yarns to make it all cohesive. While I agree the neckline is large it reminds me of a sweetheart cut which is flattering. Great job.
I have this exact book (same yellow hardcover but called The Complete Book of Handicrafts in UK). As a child of 11 in 1973 I confirm we were traumatised by fashions, home decor and serving suggestions for food (ask your grandparents if they have a blue hardcovered recipe book…).
You know, I always said I am never going to use a shawl. But you know what? I was wrong 😅 I actually use a lot of shawls, just not as shawls. I get hot when I sleep but I still feel like I need something covering me (atleast in my midsection) So I started making triangle shawls which allow my legs to fully hang out, but I can wrap my midsection and fold over my arms. Also, I don't suffocate because nothing goes over my fave 😊 I like that you tried this. I've been watching a woman on TH-cam who does "mystery vintage crochet" and all her patterns are from a book that goes from 1840-1970 They are mysteries because her son covers the name of what she is making and cuts out the pictures so she can't see what she is making. It's always really cool to see what ends up being produced! Sometimes a tablecloth, a bedspread, a cape or a little tissue pouch. But everything looks so elegant. I love granny everything, I just don't have a body shape that matches 😂
I have that book! I remember using my birthday book tokens back in 1973! Cover is different, content is the same. It might be a different print edition. Auntie Amy made that and it fitted perfectly. All our clothing sizes changed too, over in the UK. For example, I think size 10 then is like 6/7 now and S/M/L has too; it’s more like XS or XXS to start. The fashion sizing completely changed. Don’t forget, girdles were very common place too so clothing sat very differently. Please, PLEASE don’t give up on vintage; it just needs breaking down a lot and following to the letter without tweaking 🧶🐾😊
had to come back to mention, my mom and i binge watched this show on netflix, Firefly Lane, last week, and it's set in the 70s-2000s (not told chronologically) and one of the main character's moms in the 70s in episode 1 or 2 was WEARING THE VEST!!! I was so shocked we had to pause so i could explain I've seen that vest design before!!
I think this was definitely a win! Certainly for a first attempt. Mine would have been an elaborate collage of wonk 😂 Also, if you haven't thought of it already, you could lay a tea-towel over the squares as a barrier while ironing 😊👍🏽🧶
Riley is adorable, we have a cockatiel named Pepper and a turquoise Conure named Tegid. Somedays they make it a real challenge to crochet and love to play drop the stitch markers on the floor and watch the human pick them up again!
The way you constantly made changes and adapted as you went was great actually and I really like the end result. I love the way it came out and I love that you kept on keeping on and made something nice
I made a poncho from hexagons into a pullover last year through much the same set of difficulties. Things just kept getting worse. I saved that one, but this year’s projects are both in disgrace in the back of the wardrobe. I don’t dare frog them anymore in case they disintegrate and I have no idea how to fix them. Hi. I would never ever iron directly on the granny square itself. I use a damp (kitchen)towel to protect the material. It’s safer. And you will get a nice “blocked” result.
OMG I have an heirloom button tin too! It was my Gran's, then my Mum's and now it's mine. I think one or two of the buttons are older than that though. Fun to look through even when I don't need a button. The cardi is actually pretty cool (and YAYYYY pockets!) and the way you switched things up to accommodate any 'little local difficulties' was awesome. I must confess that I did enjoy the "triangular version of the granny square" - if only there was a word for that! 🤣Riley is adorable and clearly angling for his own channel! 🦜

Let me start my saying, love Riley in your video. I learn to crochet by making a granny square. I've made blankets, a bag, and two sweaters for family. It is more fun if you make your own pattern. You sweater (cardigan) love the colors. I think it came out pretty good for your first time. I never block my squares. I throw the finished piece in the dryer on low setting with a dryer sheet. I have a cat, so it takes care of any cat hairs, it loosens the yarn for a nice drape, and make whatever I made smell good before I get it as a gift. Can wait to see what else you make with granny squares.
My first granny square attempts were at the very start of me learning how to crochet. it was just a couple of granny squares together in a big rectangle and it now functions as a little blanket for the dolls of my niece. As for the neckline. I think you could just finish the row upwards with two more squares on either side and then add ribbing along the entire thing. 1 square wide is plenty of space for the neck.
"Again"? I take it you didn't have a great experience? To be totally honest, I was internally freaking out the whole time I had that iron, worried I was going to screw it all up lol. Luckily, it seemed to work out okay in the end.

I always put some fabric between the iron and what I'm ironing to help prevent any accidental burning. Adds a layer of protection to reduce a lot of worry. Also prevents any iron gunk getting on the work
I can see a granny vest/cardie redo in Riley colours? That would be amazing! BTW, in the book, that mint coloured block - WHY was there a steaming kettle over a cot? Is there a pattern for a scald-proof baby blanket?!? Very perplexed... 🤨 PS: I inherited my grandmother's sewing kit full of notions and buttons. There are many unopened little purchases like zips and pins so now it's more of a time capsule. Nothing Antiques Roadshow-able, but dear to me.

Treble stitch is similar to double crochet except you wrap the yarn around the hook three times and yarn over and pull through one more time. Making a triple stitch instead of a double.
I made a very similar vest. Similar issues with the wide neck. It now sits in the cupboard 😢 Thanks for your thought process - next time i will use your tips and tricks!
motifs are used to make larger projects lol that boring section is going to be useful to make all kinds of projects if you want to venture into making clothes, bags, blankets, etc I love this cardigan! it looks like it's made of poptarts it's perfect

I believe all crocheters have similar fails. I have a v- neck vest made of beautiful yarn but the fit OMG. (Not my only fail.) Perhaps throw a party where everyone wears one of "fails."
Honestly, a crochet fail party sounds like a good time. Just a bunch of us sitting around in ill-fitting clothes, cursing under our breath while frogging our work lol.
It looks super cozy! I worked in care homes for years and years, and especially in the morning when we were first starting it was a little chilly so I'd go grab a cardigan from a residents closet to borrow. The one I borrowed most often was an oversized homemade granny square cardigan, so this brought back some good memories for me =) I miss my old people some days!
The yarn used for the original item, while it may have been the same weight yarn, was made of different materials and therefore had a different stretch property. Acrylics don’t have as much give as more modern yarns with other fiber contents blended in. And, of course, blocking takes care of many woes.

Cheers 😊. The solid colour yarns are all Four Seasons Marvel 8ply from Spotlight but the rainbow variegated yarn was a thrift find and I have no idea what it is.

What do you have so many ends to your granny square? I make mines with a one thread didn't cut at every round... For a firsdt ever attempts of making granny square AND a cardigan, it's a win, really, it's nice and looks cosy and warm. If you didn't like, try to sell it, I'm sure there is people who crave for a cardigan like that :D Nice job !

I always put some fabric between the iron and what I'm ironing to help prevent any accidental burning. Adds a layer of protection to reduce a lot of worry. Also prevents any iron gunk getting on the work

PS: I inherited my grandmother's sewing kit full of notions and buttons. There are many unopened little purchases like zips and pins so now it's more of a time capsule. Nothing Antiques Roadshow-able, but dear to me.

I know!! When I first saw it I was like WTF?! But I think the kettle is supposed to go with the square thing next to the cot, kind of like a kettle coaster. Kind of a poor design choice!

Treble stitch is similar to double crochet except you wrap the yarn around the hook three times and yarn over and pull through one more time. Making a triple stitch instead of a double.
I made a very similar vest. Similar issues with the wide neck. It now sits in the cupboard 😢

motifs are used to make larger projects lol that boring section is going to be useful to make all kinds of projects if you want to venture into making clothes, bags, blankets, etc

I believe all crocheters have similar fails. I have a v- neck vest made of beautiful yarn but the fit OMG. (Not my only fail.) Perhaps throw a party where everyone wears one of "fails."
Honestly, a crochet fail party sounds like a good time. Just a bunch of us sitting around in ill-fitting clothes, cursing under our breath while frogging our work lol.
It looks super cozy! I worked in care homes for years and years, and especially in the morning when we were first starting it was a little chilly so I'd go grab a cardigan from a residents closet to borrow. The one I borrowed most often was an oversized homemade granny square cardigan, so this brought back some good memories for me =) I miss my old people some days!

The yarn used for the original item, while it may have been the same weight yarn, was made of different materials and therefore had a different stretch property. Acrylics don’t have as much give as more modern yarns with other fiber contents blended in. And, of course, blocking takes care of many woes.
All in all you did a good job .

Cheers 😊. The solid colour yarns are all Four Seasons Marvel 8ply from Spotlight but the rainbow variegated yarn was a thrift find and I have no idea what it is.

What do you have so many ends to your granny square? I make mines with a one thread didn't cut at every round...
For a firsdt ever attempts of making granny square AND a cardigan, it's a win, really, it's nice and looks cosy and warm. If you didn't like, try to sell it, I'm sure there is people who crave for a cardigan like that :D Nice job !
Cheers. For these squares I just followed the pattern in the book but if there's a granny square pattern out there where you don't cut the yarn after every round, I need to find it because weaving all those ends in was a pain in the bum lol.

The end result was amazing. The vest would of been cool but what you have really is awesome. How warm is it?
It's decently warm but so far I've only worn it indoors. I'll have to take it outside on a chilly day for a real test.
double crochet and treble are two different stitch types. i call trebles triples because you yarn over twice before inserting
If it's made out of acrylic yarn wash it and warm and dry on warm and it will shrink a little bit like half a size
