Holmes cried after the match. It was just for hype. Ali could lose. Berbick was hitting him awful hard but not Holmes. Ali knew he wasn't able to be in the ring. He should have not boxed
The hell was holmes and berbick suppose to do. They didn't make Ali fight. He got in the ring. They both fought to win. Blame Ali team. For putting him in the ring.
There's so much to say about Tyson that I think a couple of important things get neglected. His defense was always disciplined; hands always up. He was smart and patient about when to come in against much taller opponents with a longer reach. I think he must have been very coachable.
Well coached but also there is something inhuman about him, which gave him an advantage. You can tell he is operating with different software by listening to him talk. He's like a new prototype we didn't know a person could be. He's an inspiration for everyone to develop their own style. It's like Peter Thiel says, "competition is for losers". When you perfect your own thing you have a ten X advantage.
He was breed by Cus D’amato to thinking he is the best, reading books about the world best warrior, raised like an Italian gentleman, listened to every word Cus had to say, he was his father that turned him into the most destructive killing machine god ever created
Marion Knight right on. Mike Tyson on this night would have beaten ANYONE. he could have gone down as the greatest ever had he stayed with Kevin Rooney.
Prime George Foreman knocks out this version of Mike Tyson and the Muhammad Ali that beat George Foreman in 1974 would've had a 50/50 chance with this version of Mike Tyson.
Mike Tyson would have been the indisputable best heavyweight boxer of all time if Cus D'Amato would have lived at least 5 more years, time for Mike to mature and avoid the consequences of his poor decisions. Non the less he was boxing gold and deservingly belongs as one of its greatest contenders. Tyson was a fucking Roman Gladiator and no other boxer in history gave you that sensation of being in the Roman Colosseum watching gladiators fight to the death like Tyson.
I remember watching either Trevor Berbick or Pinklon Thomas on a late night talk show and the host asked him about his strategy in the fight. And, the fighter answers: “I let him get a head shot in so I could show him that I could take it.” Yeah...great strategy...how’d that work out for ya. Both boxers, I believe were KO’d within 2 or 3 rounds. After the James “Bonecrusher” Smith fight, on another late night talk show the host asked Smith about the fight and Smith answered that nothing works with Tyson. He has so much power that if he punches during in a clinch it still does serious damage to your mid-section.
Mike’s real secret weapon wasn’t Cus, it was Kevin Rooney. If he stayed with another 5 years with Rooney, he would have remained undefeated. Regardless, he’s the best heavyweight of all time.
Yes, also noticed that, his speed isn't human. Its unbeliveble... power of punches, always combinations. Inside the ring at prime the best boxer ever. when he is right no one who ever lived or will live could ever beat him in fair boxing match, perfect Defence and ofense and just MEAN intensions hahaha.
It's not "reaction time" man. It's hard work of training sequences over and over and knowing and building anticipation and natural instinct of the incoming hit. This was all he did and prepared for, and is somewhat invalidating to the training to a degree
Respect I was born in 1978. Great to meet someone that grew up with Tyson as a kid. It was incredible. That's why people of our generation love Mike Tyson he was a great Champion.

Coming back to watch this for the first time after watching so many podcasts with the new mike Tyson. If I grew up watching this mike I would never guess he would turn into the enlightened man he is today
Notice at 2-43, he throws that kidney punch. The power and accuracy hitting that part of the body not only knocked the wind right out of you but it was right where the nerves controlling leg balance are. Most of his knock outs was preceded by this vicious move. Guy wasn't just brutal, he was surgical as well.
This intro is absolutely key 🔑 Tyson while not short per say always used being shorter to his advantage. He boxed very strategically and that leverage and torque helped him have incredible accuracy and power. Not to mention his feet and head speed allowed him to be defensive.
Tyson was one of the most powerful punchers, but in terms of technique, he had the BEST ever. It showed just what a great teacher and father figure Cus was to him. Once he was gone, so was the skills he developed in his fighter.
MatthewDaSmitdog Incorrect. Mike achieved everything after Cus died. This fight is a year after Cus’s death. He went on to reign for years after this. His downfall was when Kevin Rooney left his camp. Rooney finished the work Cus started.

Along with Ali vs Williams and a few others, this must be the cream of heavyweight boxing performances.Berbick must have been deluded to think he could overpower Mike.

Man, Berbick was REALLY GOOD and SUPER TOUGH. He ate so many shots that would have ended other guys- and he was still throwing bombs. Tyson was just GREAT
Mike is a monster even if he’s not the greatest fighter from a static standpoint in my opinion 86 Mike is unbeatable vs anyone u pick ,mikes run was short and he didn’t get the lasting long term prime compared to most boxers but 86 mike was pure perfection
Based on my skill set, natural style and attributes as a fighter, I feel most in common with those fighters who when facing Tyson run away lots. This always seems to me to be eminently sensible as a strategy, capitalising as it does on the kind of situation creation where one gets hit as little as possible by him.
It looks like he spent the majority of the fight measuring the distance between him and Trevor, and closing the gap. Didn’t look worried about his defence as much, more focused on landing his hits. Mike punches must have been extremely nasty in his prime that he was so confident relying on them during such an important fight against a great fighter like Trevor.
Despite Berbick's height and reach advantage, Tyson was able to score huge punches that wore the champ down. Tyson was SO fast in his early career with the ability to follow up on hits he landed on his opponents. His raw strength and speed were difficult for anyone to defend against.
I remember watching Tyson fights in 80s when I was a kid and it always felt like Tyson was a big heavyweight even though he's only like 5'11. He fought a guy who's 6'2-6'5 but once the fight started, Tyson just look as big as his opponent because he closed the gap so quickly and throwing punches from all angles.
It was so amazing that back then if you began heating up your microwave popcorn at the start of the match tyson would knock out his opponent before the microwave beeped.
In fact, i admire Berbick for bearing so crazy puching... until 1:27 at 2nd round... that savage hit leaves him like a zombie around the ring. That was a no-return point. There will be no one ever like Tyson in his peak. Incredible defence, great agility and hitting like a truck 😵
