Make sure you're throwing as much as you possibly can at your retirement and 401K!! It's easy to forget about when you're making all that money. Max out the allotments. You will be happy you did.

    I'm not a lineman, I do telecom. Lots of hours of work isn't that bad when you work with a buddy. Since a lot of my work involves non lethal voltage, you mostly work by yourself during the day, but at night, you work in pairs and for more money. Sometimes I climb, sometimes I'm in a manhole, sometimes I'm in a bucket truck, sometimes I'm in the basement of a huge mall. We take care of the fiber optic nodes and amplifiers and 60/90v power supplies with inverter and batteries and all the associated cabling. This can involve replacement and programming of all related electronic components. I often am in contact with the power companies to report outages or to determine an outage length. I may have to power the telecom equipment out of my truck via an inverter or drop a generator to be refueled by other technicians.
    In some areas, you are in the same union as electrical. Your pay can be similar. You can clear $150k with benefits and take a vehicle home to cut costs.
    Make your money now. Invest it. Don't buy stupid crap now thinking you will invest later. Compound over time will make you a lot more money. You will get injured or worn out over time. You should have investment income by then. When you get stable investment income, pour it on. Whatever you want because you have a retirement package brewing in the background, higher than average salary, investment income and savings. I've gone back to the racetrack and it's fantastic. Hanging out with my childhood friend, not a care in the world. I had a good $2k day last weekend. We call it the unicorn day. Three call outs with shift premium and on call pay. One call out was 45 minutes and then back to bed) I'm buying me some new go fast goodies...

      @@BlueCollarEDU Thanks!. About to do on call 7 days in a row three days off and 5 days on, 3 of them being on call. Since I live in Canada we have Canadian pension and unemployment insurance deducted from our pay but because of how much I made, I've paid them off so now my net pay is higher.
      It's 4AM now. I'm dropping by the office to get the articulated arm boom truck. We're fixing a cable while on early shift premium and I'm going home early. As things get more expensive it doesn't affect me much. Two scheduled pay raises a year. Every pay raise means more money in my pension and more money in the stock purchase program from the company. That's where they get the office people. Lower base salary with higher bonus. Your pension and other financial benefits are based on your salary, but not your bonus. Also, if they add a task or a day to salary office people, they don't pay them any more money. I'm higher base salary with overtime. I take home a vehicle and don't pay for clothing.

I grew up in upstate Ny and when we got his with snow storms and the power went out… the house got cold, seeing a utility truck drive by with the flashing lights was such a joy to see. So the money is crazy.. so I’ve heard but I think helping people is also a cool part of it. Plus the brotherhood (just in school our group is pretty tight nit, I can’t imagine real crews)

    Go ahead and get into the trade for the money. See how that works when it's 120 outside or 15 at night and you've been up for 40 or more hours. It's the respect of the trade and the love of the brother next to you that makes this profession special. You never stop learning in this line of work. It takes a strong and humble hearted person.
    The room for error is extremely small and I've gotten away with my share of mistakes as any honest lineman will tell you.
    This trade deserves more respect than just "come make money" in my humble opinion.
    Now that these fancy new belts prevent falling, everyone wants to be a lineman.

      Well, Vixey, you live in a right to work state. Anotherwords anyone can work there if they want? As a power utility lineman I can only advise what I know? To make the big money as a journeyman you have to get an “A” ticket if you posses the talents to get it? Any Local IBEW union hall can give you that. You’ll need people that work for that Local to vouge for you. Once you sign an “A” ticket there, they will put you on a list of available lineman who can work. As contractors call for union lineman your name will advance up the list until such a time that your phone will ring. The jobs might be in far flung destinations in your state or out of state. It’s up to you to get there on time to go to work. You would be considered a “traveling lineman”. Many travelers are young men & woman not otherwise with a family however that is not uncommon. Many have a big pick up truck to get to remote locations. With a fifth wheel trailer camper they pull behind them. Often you’ll park the trailer at a nearby campground with hook ups until the job is done. Travelers work as many hours a day to get the most money. Your only paid while your working. Don’t expect sick time or vacation. The standard work week can vary. I have heard of 6-10 hour days, 7-12’s & 7-16’s. This is a young man’s job by the way. If your old like me you probably won’t make the cut?
      Power company lineman work for a utility & make a lot less money than a traveler but they have holidays off, vacation, sick time. This job is better for lineman with families. Often you have to start as an apprentice at their schools & advance up to utility lineman. Typical work load is 40 hour weeks with overtime. If you like making top dollar than I would advise you to work as a traveler then.
      This a job with large commitments. If your not able to change with the demands of the job? You won’t make that big coin.

    • @johnclyne6350
      @johnclyne6350 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PLEBEJones A ticket is Journeyman lineman pay scale. Utility lineman such as myself only will get a B ticket.
      Journeyman lineman have a far more complex apprenticeship than a utility lineman. They must complete 1/3 of their apprenticeship building & maintaining transmission lines. One third building & maintaining distribution lines. One third building & maintaining substations. I only have the building & maintaining distribution lines. Hence why I have a B ticket. The union hall will get jobs & they need to fill them with men & woman of different talents. Operating engineers to drive heavy equipment. Helpers to do the heavy grunt work & A ticket lineman. Unless the jobs specify utility “B” lineman I won’t be called up if I sign on their books looking for work?
