The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Review - Iterative Sequel or Masterpiece?

  • Breath of the Wild may have been the more influential game (and for many that preferred its simplicity and elegance of design, it will probably remain their preferred one of the pair), but in almost every way, by almost every conceivable metric, Tears of the Kingdom is the better game.
And delivering a follow up to one of the best games ever made that is, somehow, even better? No words are necessary at this point. This game is a masterpiece, and any fan of the medium will do themselves a disservice if they don’t check it out.

I wish more sequels are like TOTK and Saints Row 2 in a sense where the open world is reused with major adjustments+new regions but the bulk of the development is more focused on the game design and fleshing out the world than rebuilding an open world from scratch which takes a massive amount of time, effort and budget from development, think of a game like cyberpunk we all know that there is a potential for it to be a GOAT tier and i think its possible if the sequel reused the open world but the development is more focused on fleshing out the world and the game design aspect.

Just completed my first temple (which was the Wind Temple for me), and it was quite the experience. Just getting to the temple is a quest in and of itself; you simply cannot be afraid of stormy, swirling clouds, lightning, jumping and gliding at mind-boggling, breath-taking heights! (Imagine the Twilight Princess in the air boss battle with Argorok happening much, much, MUCH higher in the stormy clouds) About to proceed to the next quest, working in a couple of side quests along the way, and curious if the remaining boss battles will be just as epic. It will be tough to surpass this one. There's just so much to explore and do, you can veer away from the main storyline at any time to take in some of what else the game offers.

While I love this game, I am worried about the future of zelda games. Botw/Totk were such a hit so does that mean all new zelda games are going to be open world like this? There is legitimate criticism from when botw came out of the open world feeling hollow and empty
There are many, going back to early PS2 days that just have that feeling of passing time, satisfying boredom/curiosity before getting back to main campaign i.e this disconnect between the game and the open world exploration.
Zelda used to be one of the few games imo that struck the right balance where your exploration of its world never felt like a curiosity side quest or something to do in between the main game.

The new mechanics and gameplay is great, but its high is not long lasting as we are still in pretty much the same world with not much difference.
I was expecting a grand large sky island/s with dungeons, a new variety of enemies, and everything else.
It really does feel like a large BotW dlc, like a Minecraft version… but is that what we waited 6 years for? The longest wait for any new Zelda game? Idk man… I expected more.

You just suck at exploring then. This game has a ton of new content compared with BotW. Have you been to the Depths? The underworld is the same size as the surface. They essentially doubled the map and that's without even counting the sky islands. Not to mentions hundreds of caves and wells, some of which are huge. And tons of changes were made to the surface as well. There's also like 3 times as many enemies as in BotW, if not more.
You're right, it doesn't make any sense that this game took 6 years to make. That's an absolute miracle. A game like this with such a huge world, so much content, so much polish, and so many mechanics should've taken a decade to make. And yet they did it in a mere 6 years.
As for the Zelda "formula", well I'm sorry but you'll just have to play the old games if you want that. Formulas are not good for franchises, you have to keep things fresh or your franchise will sink into creative bankruptcy. That's what happened to Pokemon. Be grateful that Nintendo abandoned the formula before it got stale and made something fresh and exciting.

@@MarkHogan994 we already explored the entire world in the first game. I already KNOW what is everywhere. Why would I want to explore the exact same world we’ve already been to. It’s like moving to a new house with the same exact floor mapping as your your old one, just with new furniture. You can explore that since you’re so easily impressed.
We wanted a NEW world on top of this old one. This old Hyrule should’ve been a place you come back to every now and again, not the foundation base area for this game. We should’ve had a new sky island that was like it’s own world. The depths are cool, but is a wasteland of gloom and the odd bokoblin and frog enemy every now and again. It’s hardly a new revelation, however, I’ve not explored it thoroughly yet so I could be wrong.
Regardless, this game feels lazy and it makes no sense as to why this took 6 years. They built the original BotW Hyrule in less time ffs.
Have you played the old Zelda’s? Majoras mask? That’s how you do a sequel. An entirely new world and realm to explore. That took them only a year in 1999.
To wait 6 years for this. You’re Nintendo fanboying. Stop accepting this low tier bs.
When I say formula I’m not saying i want an ocarina of time remaster, but this game is literally abandoning what makes Zelda Zelda when they promised us they’d be bringing back the foundational Zelda elements. Elements such as proper dungeons with mini bosses, keys, a place you’re sort of trapped in and can get lost in. Instead we have colourful divine beasts.
Like bruh we don’t even really have a new world/map to explore. These few little rocks in the sky make this whole sky malarkey they built up feel pointless. Skyward sword had more sky stuff than this.
This is not 6 years worth of development. They built BotW in that time. That game was fantastic. This is a large dlc that I’d have happily taken in 2020/2021, not a full fledged Zelda game.

People throwing out the word masterpiece like it's holloween candy sheesh. This man didn't mention any of the many many negatives of this game. How about the fact that weapon durability is actually worse than before because now not only is every weapon as brittle as before it's actually more brittle than before even with fusion. Fusion doesn't make the weapon more durable than before but just brings it up to what it would have been in the original game. But now you have to actively go out of your way to attach monster parts or the like to make it a viable weapon. The story is not much better at all considering the original story was objectively lacking. The "dungeons" are not much better than before and are cheasable as ever before. How about that now you can't just stockpile arrows of various types but now have to individually fuse every single arrow you wish to use. And navigating all these parts to fuse is soooo combersome and terrible. The combat is just as lack luster as before. I can't believe the still haven't fixed the wonky flurry rush timing as before. Like seriously what where they thinking. Their are many more problems but i swear idk why Nintendo and Zelda games especially get this type of un critical treatment.

The dive feature and map of the sky are amazing but i really think this game is looking more like a DLC to me. The story line gets too basic and boring in betweens. The task that you have to be like a messanger were you have to go back and fourth to purah and a certain guy multiple times is so un inspired. And i don't like the part that they are pretty much telling you/giving the important details and items straight away.. the chasms are pretty much plain . Just a new place but dark. Also, exploring every corners specially the odd ones are no longer rewarding unlike BOTW .. and the Korok puzzles . The one where a korok is separated from his friend.. Super fucking annoying. Another thing. There's no heroes path! in all fairness im in the early stage of the game but this first 5 hours of my gameplay is a NO for me . Not a good sign

As fun as this game is for me so far, I am still feeling the same cynicism that I had before. This game is very derivative of BotW. Even though it obviously has a ton of content and gameplay to get through, it still feels very much like the "DLC" that I felt it might be. Previous Zelda sequels were doing things very differently from their first games (Majoras Mask, Zelda 2, Links Awakening, etc.) This game still consists of the same general narrative of BotW with some slight improvements with the story. This was a bad point for Nintendo to start asking for the $70 price tag.

  • @maniaque37

i played a few hours of tears of the kingdom and there was not much any fighting. adventure and puzzles and such things take too much space. they should make it so we have to encounter more enemies and be forced to fight instead of this avoiding game. you can just move away from enemies and avoid the fighting and they dont come at you much at all and not fighting dont block you from moving ahead. the graphics are very good and the adventure is cool. the game is great but not perfect. i think zelda is somewhat overrated sometimes because i think that whatever game they make in this series , some fanboys will like whatever they do i guess and say its a masterpiece and such stuff. i dont say the game is bad but i say its not perfect and could have more fighting to make it more challenging and interesting. some people also say this game could have simply been a dlc. it does look alot like an expansion from botw.

Nah, you are just in a minority. It’s a shame but it happens to all of us at some Point.
BOTW won game of the year on release which no other zelda game had done.
It was voted best game ever in 2021 on a Japanese national channel. It was selected as best game ever last year in GQ magazine by 200 critiques. You may disagree but some game has to win in the end.
It’s sold more than any other Zelda game. It has faults ‘but what game doesn’t. The fact it continued to get awards years after release shows what a masterpiece is.
It’s fine not to enjoy it yourself as much as everyone else. But it’s immature to try to make poor excuses in order to bolster your experience and make it seem like the majority consensus is wrong, or belittle and yours right. I’m reminded of the flat Earthers.
Developers like those of genshin impact and fynix rising have admitted being inspired by BOTW.

@@qiwjjdj288 it’s geting reviewing bombed by people who clearly haven’t played it, as other great games have been, unfortunately.
But the sales numbers speak for themselves, and people are going crazy for it in real life and social media.
BOTW was voted best game of all time by the public in 2021 on the national NHK channel. This game is even better.
There are many critics who have no love for `Nintendo, don’t need any favours from Nintendo and still gave it top marks. You are portraying the who le journalistic industry as corrupt with Nintendo which is laughably dumb, and so you must be trolling…which is sad.
Face it- you are in the minority and and have to resort to trolling to protect your ego. Grow up soon, it will make dealing with TOTK winning Game of the year much easier this year.
