Call Immediately! Extended Warranty Scam?

  • I get these things in the mail every time I get a new vehicle. This time I decided to call to see what it was all about.
It seems to be a standard sales pitch for an extended warranty for your vehicle. Honestly, I’m not a fan of these warranties. In fact, I’ve covered this topic in previous videos. Look for the link below in the “Related Videos” section.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy my call with the extended warranty company. It was fun.

@@KogeyFox I got a few of these recently for my car. It's a brand new 2023 Subaru Forester. Still under warranty from Subaru. I've only had my car since February so there's no way the warranty would have expired.

I'm so glad you're doing a video on this. It's very important that people are aware of these scams. They've tried to get me couple of time, but I've never fell for it. They just want your money. At end of it all you will be paying so much for less to covered. That line "every situation is different" is one of their favorite lines they use. It even gets worse when you actually try to put in a claim.

Pro tip: most extended warranties, for most products, are scammy. Most defective products break within the year (which is inside the mandatory warranty period in most places), so extended warranties are rarely actually used.

At the shop I worked at as a manager, we got updates (AKA warnings) almost every week on many of these outfits. Almost all of them take so freaking long to pay your shop back it's crazy. Many would string the shop along driving the billing dept crazy.
Owner got tired of it after a while and stopped taking them at all. I'm glad he did.

They get it straight from the state. Here in Florida we have this law...
"it is the policy of this state that all state, county, and municipal records shall at all times be open for a personal inspection by any person.
      - Fla. Stat. sec. 119.01(1) (1995)"

    • @LoveClassicMusic0205
      @LoveClassicMusic0205 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It comes from the state whenever you transfer a title. They sell this information. I bought a used vehicle about 5 years ago in Michigan and I must have gotten about 10 of these in the mail several weeks later. I round filed them all.

Some of those wear and tear items are expensive to replace such as brake linings and collateral damage to rotors caused by worn brake linings, shocks, etc. The cost of accessing a covered part might not be covered. And THEY make the decision if the part is covered or faulty maintenance is the blame.

  • @SmittySmithsonite
    @SmittySmithsonite 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

HAHA! I get those notices all the time. One time they sent a list of repair costs for different systems/parts - I laughed when I saw $3,800 for A/C repair, $1,600 for an alternator, etc.. On an '07 Silverado, you can have the alternator out in literally 5 minutes, lol. Guess that list was designed to scare people into getting the coverage.
Wonder how many people actually pay that? Crazy!!

I appreciate the share Eric, to be honest I had one on a 2008 Hyundai Sonata and it was horrible. Everytime something needs to be replace I got nothing but excuses... it doesn't cover wear and tear components. Then you have to fight to get coverage on components they said was covered under warranty. BTW replacing slave cylinder on my 05 Acura TL was a breeze thanks to one of your older vids. Replacing hydraulics one civic vid... the days when you had longer hair lol

yeah i got an "extended warranty" when i got my 2011 juke. i drove the car 6 months and had to get a repair for the cv axles . they are listed under the coverage took it in and lo and behold i was denied ! reason : the boots were worn . looked into reviews for this place and i saw 1 happy customer. every review was a horror story of denials for the most common things gasket failure , boot wear, metal fatigue etc. one person stated the warranty company had the mechanic dismantle the motor found it was a gasket failure denied coverage . the customer was now on the hook for the tear down diagnostic fees he couldnt afford, lost his car, his job, and ruined his credit . i will NEVER buy an after market " warranty" ever
thanks for bringing up this topic ! it needs heard !

I work for an extended service contract company and he is lying. Pre-existing conditions are never covered and he did not even follow protocol on if we could cover the car or not. People like this make the business upsetting for others. Extended service contract can help as long as it is worth it for you and you do your regular maintenance. I appreciate you being diplomatic about this situation. Keep in mind, fixing a Mini Cooper costs almost as much as it costs to fix a BMW. I thank you for being real about your experience with the person you dealt with. GREATLY appreciated. :)

You also have to watch the fine print on extended warranties like that. I had one from a small scammy type dealership (I didn't realize it when I purchased the vehicle) that when I read the fine print, the policy dictated how much they would spend on specific repairs before totaling the vehicle in which case they would pay out the trade in amount to me and they would keep my vehicle. I went back and canceled that policy. Never bought from that place again either. They sell polished crap! I learned my lesson and learned a little about keeping up my own vehicle when I still young and naive.

My previous truck came with an extended warranty , I had all kind of problems with it...my water pump went out, would have been just under a hundred bucks to change it myself. But thinking I had this great warranty I brought it to the dealer like asked...ended up costing me almost 400 because they only covered the part not anything related..like seals hoses coolant or most expensive labor

ECTG1 I had something similar to that notice on my vehicle. I called them as well, spoke to a rep and was in process of being transferred when I got the feeling that it felt "off". I had just taken my vehicle to dealership to get front passenger seat belt replaced (found that it was under 10 year warranty as all my vehicle seat belts are under said warranty); seat belt was binding in retractable mechanism. I then hung up because it felt like one of many scams. I know in future that I'll just put those mailings in circular file.

Most times it would be better to place the cost of the warranty(monthly) into a bank account as a rainy day/repair fund. If you need it its there. If you don't it could be a down payment on another vehicle or even house repair.

So far, it sounds reasonable. Specially for a Mini. I made bank on a carmax warranty on a used Landrover. At LEAST 10x the warranty amount in two years. It eventually got ran off the road by a logging truck and tore the roof off on a tree stump. THAT, they didn't cover.

In '97, I bought a '92 Dodge Dynasty and paid $1000 for an extended warranty through Chrysler. It paid off big time! They did almost $1600.00 worth of repairs ( new trans and some other smaller work) and all I paid was the $100.00 deductible. I even got a loaner car while they did the trans. They towed it in, repaired it right the first time. I drove that car for another 9 years without issue. I was very satisfied with the Chrysler warranty service.

I just said "I don't have those funds at the current time."
Click. "Um... hello?" They frikkin hung up on me. I guess because I mentioned I didn't have the $500 they wanted. So much for helping the customer. After that, I realized it was a scam.

I am sure that there are a lot of automotive technicians who will not work on your vehicle if you are utilizing this as a form of insurance.

A good question to ask them, "How do you determine a pre-existing condition? Do i have to go to a shop to get it looked at or do you just take my word for it?"

Another problem is that when you purchase the warranty and when you need to use it they charge you a deductible which he never talked about but I am sure is in the fine print. Also they often reject claims for repairs as well for various reasons.

I’ve dealt with some of these companies before and I won’t say all of them but most of them it’s like pulling teeth to get a claim paid I remember one occasion I literally had to hold a customers vehicle an extra day because of non payment by one of these companies they bounced the first check for initial inspection, we got the charge back for that check on the the morning of the day the customer was to pick up the vehicle (we had the vehicle a couple weeks for the repairs) the second check was declined by the check guarantee service at the time of pickup the poor customer unexpectedly had to come up with a little over $3k out of pocket to get his vehicle back. I don’t know if the customer ever got his money reimbursed to him by that warranty company.

I get similar in the mail conveniently made to look like a check...any warranty not bought from your dealer or directly from your auto company will probably be difficult to implement when needed. If u live in a city there is a better alternative anyway, It is called public transportation. With so many places providing deliveries now and many medical insurance companies providing transportation to medical appointments a swell as ride share companies when you are in a huge hurry u may WANT a car but in a most cities you rarely NEED a car.

I get calls almost daily regarding the warranty on my car. The car is a 1992 740 Volvo with over 400K miles that I have owned for several years and is well past any factory warranty. I think they send these in the mail and call anyone that has a current vehicle registration.

I get calls all the time for my 2013 Kia Sorento. Telling me that my vehicle warranty is about to expire, and that I had been mailed a final notice. LOL. Ok now I took the car to my local dealer for some recall work, and an oil change. FYI when you go to some dealer ships. The dealer see that your car is out of warranty they give your information, or sell it to these there’d party company’s. I called the dealer to ask them why I am getting these calls. I was told that they have to submit the information of the warranty expiration to the database by law. So they did so with out informing me.

I can honestly say we are dead honest and if it's covered item then we pay out no quibbles.
Only thing is that the warranties are expensive to purchase to start with

Donald Ellett same for my '01 Blazer. Been the best vehicle I've ever owned by far. So much that I replaced the engine 4 years ago after I sucked up a couple of gallons of H2O into the K&N filter during a flood instead of buying a new one. The ironic part about that is my Blazer still had full coverage insurance so it was totaled, I bought it for $200 and had $3900 to fix it with.

Omg I applied to work for something about coverage I thought it was an insurance call center . I quit after my first day. We WERE THIS SCAM SHIT! The pitch was this -> “ Hi my name is Jo from Dealer Processing calling regarding your (VEHICLE YR MAKE MODEL) because our files indicate you have yet to reinstate your factory warranty , you have been mailed several final notices and this is your Final Courtesy Call” and unfortunately some people do fall for it and pay 😳 so I was Scam Likely, for a day. It was the worst experience ever tbh.

This actually sounds a lot more legitimate than I had thought it was. They actually know something about cars and the guy you were talking to was fairly professional in his demeanor.
I'm not going to be purchasing coverage from them, but I can see how it provides a useful service for people that have trouble managing their finances for large future repairs.

after the original warranty expired on a car I had, I took out one of these only mine didn't cost $4500 I think it was $1600 with a $100 deductible and there was a waiting period of about a month, in order for any warranty coverage you had to make sure your car was maintained with regular oil changes and show proof of receipts I never used it and after I traded the car in i received a small portion of the money I had paid them but I had to send proof that I traded the car in.

I've gotten a lot of notices for stuff like this and immediately knew it was bullcrap (at least in my case) because it was about my "2008 BMW 328i" or something like that and that was simply hilarious. I've never had *any* vehicle in my name so obviously their sources aren't always the most accurate. They were trying to take my money for a vehicle that I've never even been around.
Yea, a beemer. And the newest vehicle that has ever been a part of my household was a 2001 Lincoln!

Thanks for the info. I just got a notification in the mail and was confused because when I bought my new car no one at the dealership said anything about activating any kind of warranty. Since this is something extra on top of the warranty I got with the new vehicle. I will file the documents away as garage. Did he say he get this information from the DMV. I guess everyone selling our information to make money
