Cycled 5,000 miles my 1st year of retirement. Joined a golf league that work travel had prevented. Actually have seen our net worth INCREASE nearly each year in retirement, thanks to no debt and years of dedicated investing with my FA Dianne Sarah Olson who made me a million after giving her a sum of one hundred and eighty thousand to start. I agree a strategy is important. With only 10 years or less to retirement ...a 50/50 strategy of stocks (thru index etfs) and fixed income (mm funds and bonds) is safe and the current high fixed returns are good. If the interest rates start falling...moving more into stocks would make sense. In stocks it is important to keep about 20% in international and rest in domestic.

I do agree with the idea of being more heavily weighted in equities even as I get older. That said, having lived through several major market downturns I do derive comfort in having significant reserves that have no exposure to market volatility. I have read on the topic of index investing and have been in those funds for many years, but I also believe that if you have the time to scope out low cost managed funds you could do better there long term. There are a lot of books on investment strategies. If you haven't taken the time to do it I would recommend checking them out. Well worth the time invested.

I was advised to diversify my portfolio among several assets such as stocks and bonds since this can protect my inherited portfolio of about $2.5m. I’m used to just buying and holding assets which doesn’t seem applicable to the current rollercoaster market plus inflation is catching up with my portfolio. I’m really worried about survival after retirement.

True, I mostly just buy and hold stocks, but my portfolio has been mostly in the red for quite awhile now. Unfortunately to be able to make good gains, you’ll need to be consistent and restructure your portfolio frequently.

I’m a Travel-Nurse, and my job doesn’t permit me the time to properly analyze my holdings/evaluate stocks myself, so I’ve had a fiduciary " Julie Anne Hoover " actively restructuring my portfolio for the past 5 years now to match the present market condition and that’s how I’ve been able to stay afloat, knowing when to buy and sell…maybe you should do the same.

For first-time investors, it cannot be stressed enough how important it is to invest hard-earned money in the stock market rather than a bank where interest is guaranteed! The market appears out of control, the times are unpredictable, and the banks are deteriorating. Could there be a chance for a boomer like me? I'm working on a rough estimate of $5M for retirement, and I have a healthy six figures saved up for this. I'm almost 60.

Do you have a pension? Will your spouse still be working five years after you retire? Will you have a big social security check? Do you intend to have a part time side gig after retirement. Will your Uncle Joe be leaving you $250K? Do you live in Des Moines or do you live in New York City? Do you have 2 or 3 years in cash to ride out a big downturn in the market? I retired at 55, but all above, except Uncle, applied to me and I had $1.2 million 100% in the S&P 500 and so I let it stay as I could ride out a downturn. Now at 64, I have $3.3 million and have been withdrawing $54K the last four years. Never tried to time the market or move around from bonds to stock. Just kept contributing every paycheck in the S&P500. Best of Luck!
