From one member to another, this was one of the best hauls I have seen in ages, Jon: some very desirable LPs. Loved seeing the library albums. Great stuff.
Well, these things rarely happen to me, Alan. I still don’t know whether to believe your Charity Shop exploits. Ha. Vinyl Douche Sam just uploaded a video showing what my usual trips to Goodwill look like. Was very pleased to find these albums. I might explore some more of what was up in storage. In the spirit of your recent chat video, I might discover something I enjoy. Cheers ✌🏻
Pretty amazing stuff Jon. Like an early Christmas present for you. I’m still on the hunt for that Jaco too, I picked up word of mouth last week at the salvation and some George Harrison box sets. Great to see you doing well. Went to another thrift and they were dumping records in the trash they let me grab the ones they were going to dump still need to go through them all. We’ve been purging my kids toys this year. We’ve put a lot away on bags so we can alternate them. Crazy wild how many toys I’ve bought him over the years. Recently watched the Toys that made us with my son the first episode. So many memories… I’ve rambled enough, take care Jon… God bless
It was so fun to find these boxes at work and go through them. Couldn’t believe what I was finding there. All the kids’ toys pile up quickly. Sam and I counted his dinosaurs the other day. 34. Some of those suckers are really big, too! He has a dinosaur addiction. My daughter has a baby doll addiction. She’s starting her own orphanage. 😆 Thanks for stopping by the livestream earlier. Hope your 2023 is off to a good start. ✌🏻
I remember reading about 18 Musicians before I listened to it. I heard some good things about it from a few VC members who were showing it. All positive. It was a nice listen. But I thought that maybe some sax or trumpet solos would have made it even better. If I saw that Boston Symphony / Oistrakh-Munch I would have grabbed it too. Not that I know who Oistrakh-Munch are. {smile} But its the Boston Symphony. You can't go wrong. I have the Cantaloupe Island two-fer. >< I would have been very happy with the stuff that you got. I have the Art Ensemble BYG #2. Still looking for #26. The Actuel's originals are getting really hard to find. The Miles, Rudd, etc...You grabbed some very good records Jon. One of the best clickbait vinyl finds videos of the month. Loved it~ Rob/Boston
This will definitely prompt me to actively seek out more Reich, Rob. I’ve streamed a few of his albums over the years, but I never see those in record stores while flipping. The Oistrakh-Munch was a delightful listen. The Rudd has been my favorite new discovery out of this bunch. Always great to hear from you. Hope all is well in Boston. Cheers ✌🏻
Awesome-so happy for you! I wish we could have seen you going through those records and finding these gems. I am imagining “thrilled” means “losing it!” 👍 liking the subtitles; really works with your presentation style. [must say though, I am always up for some cat content].
Hey, Ash. This was fun finding these records. I mean, none of us really need them, but it is really cool when you can stumble across some in a fashion like this. Mr. Subtitles used to be a regular on my channel awhile ago. It’s funny about my cat. You can sometimes see his tail drifting in the background. Occasionally hear a meow, but he never truly gets in front of the camera. Hope all is well. Cheers! ✌🏻
@@TheDigitalGramophone I will keep an eye out for your cat. It will be a bit like a Nessie sighting at the famous Loch! A holy grail for some! Though for me, it is probably a couple of old tires bound together! I am willing to accept that your cat exists however.
Every copy of Water Babies I've ever come across looked to beat to buy. Nice score there. I assume Mr. Subtitles has been locked in a gimp box since like 2019. Good for him getting out.
I’ve just never seen Water Babies in a record store. Would’ve grabbed it by now. Mr. Subtitles came back briefly in 2021(?), but he’s just been busy. I think he grew very tired of THE Vinyl Community. You can’t live stream with subtitles.
Some crazy finds, right?! It was even more strange what they were boxed in with. I hope you’re doing well, sis. I’ve been enjoying your out and about videos lately. 😎 🏀 🌞 Cheers ✌🏻
Well played in the Manchester. Truly a gem among gems. And here I was expecting to see Afro Harping next. Mind blowing to find that Ashby, and a promo no less. Excellent Reich and sweet to see Water Babies. Sure you didn't leave anything behind??? Is the factory available for tours?
It would have made more sense if Afro Harping was in there, too, Dom. Such an odd and random collection of records. I would have to think somebody else went through them over years, but surprised they would leave what I found behind. Factory is not open for tours. Doubt we’ll be handing out golden tickets anytime soon. ✌🏻
Quite the haul. The mind boggles at what you might have found had you looked through them years ago. Still, you did alright! Good to see Mr. Subtitles chiming in here and there. Oh, and if you're going to drive into the water... best to do that in a convertible.
I can pretty much guarantee they have been untouched for at least 25 years. The only ones I missed out on were the ones my coworker grabbed around the same day. I’m not sure if Mr. Subtitles felt this was worth coming out of retirement for, so I’ll pass along that you were glad to see him. Good to hear from you. Cheers! ✌🏻
The better Godard movie. Did you beat up the co-worker leaving to get the better records? Yeah, that Bartok is a must have (have it on CD). The Dorothy Ashby is a score!
No violence was committed obtaining these records. I will definitely stream the Bartok more. Been exploring classical a little bit since this video, but nowhere close to what I would call a deep dive - or even shallow dive. Couldn’t believe the Ashby find. Sandwiched between Manilow and Mantovani. I saw your Richman video posted. Hoping to get to it tonight.
Funny how the classical had been well played, that is rare. I guess we all learned that people work faster listening to classical. When I started with Kmart we had a turntable at the front and every month we got in an album to play. Every 20 minutes someone had to flip the album. Mr subtitles makes it hard to just kind of not pay attention, now you have to watch to see what little quips he may have. Use use to have that Reich, found it for $1
Mr. Subtitles is a bit of prince. He demands far too much attention. I’m sure the Reich was a really cheap record for many years. As were many. Jazz used to be the cheapest. I don’t know what kind of world we’re living in now with some of these record prices. Thanks for hanging, Steve. Good to see you survived that poutine from earlier in the week. ✌🏻
Hi Jon. Not sure how I missed this back in September - is this a symptom of 'the curse of the slightly infrequent uploader??' Incredible bunch of finds found in incredible circumstances...'Water Babies' is one Miles I have yet to hear. Given where you found these records, too bad there was no 'Toys in the Attic'. Cheers, James
Hey James! And I’m just seeing this now! Lol. I’m definitely not showing up in anybody’s algorithm, that’s for sure. You’ll have to do all that silly stuff - clicking the bell and nonsense. Haha! Toys in the Attic! Yes. There was an Aerosmith, but not that one. Cheers, James! ✌🏻
Hi Jon - I have a Thievery Corporation 💿 that has a bonus 📀 of a short film about them where they find a bunch of those records at a thrift shop for .25 cents. People forget Wendy was Walter. I collect classical on the Deutsche Grammaphone label .. Stravinsky & Shostakovich .. my favorites. Guess you get a discount at Cracker Barrel .. I like the grease of Waffle 🧇 House. We just got one in New Mexico & it has a Jukebox with The Cure & Depeche Mode on it. Strange game tonight as fans were hoping Boston would tie the game in the 9th as Judge was due to leadoff. The bye is what matters in the long run. The Braves finally blinked a bit but still have the home games next week. Max & Jacob will be deployed ( if needed ) Cardinals are the sleeper team. ✌️
If I knew more about classical music, I would hyperfocus on DG. I doubt I’ll ever do a deep dive, but I will probably try to stretch out more at some point. Waffle House is my spirit animal, David. Spent many late night hours in Waffle House in my younger years. I talked about it a little when I was invited on John’s channel (6inchpianist319). I never ate that much Cracker Barrel until we had kids. Just makes for an easy place to take them out in suburbia. Judge Watch still in effect. Strider out until the playoffs. I hope he’s ready to go by then. ✌🏻
I've heard of your Pastorius-toting former co-worker, Ted - Ted E Bear, right?🤣 "jokes" aside, these are a pretty phenomenal bunch of freebies Jon. I think in my dreams I'll find an OG 18 musicians in the wild. What role do you see the library music playing in your collection? Gotta make for some fascinating bgm at the least. Ice castles I've never heard of🤔 Godard at the top? Haven't seen that before, very stylish but of cine. Enjoyed this, mon Frere!
I’ll listen to the library records. I do love the covers, but you know how I’m trying to not just hold onto things for the sake of holding onto them. I’ve looked them up on Discogs, and they seem to be somewhat collectible. Had to pay homage to Godard. I wanted to include the traffic scene from Weekend, but there isn’t a good clip available online.
Music always sounds sweeter when it's free...Well, not really, but it certainly helps matters....Does that mean that the more you pay of music the less you will enjoy it? I've not got much to say about the records, I'm sure they're all lovely. I know not what a cracker barrel is. Nice little tribute to Jean-Paul Belmondo. Do actors come any cooler? Polka music? Hmmm? Don't find much of that round these parts. There's a fabulous German film called Schultze Gets the Blues, which is about a retiring miner who plays accordion polka music. His retirement has brought on a kind of late life crisis, and he's fallen out of love with the polka. One night he's listening to the radio, and hears Zydeco music for the first time. From that point on his playing of polkas becomes more and more influenced by Zydeco...Much to the chagrin of his community and racist Father....I won't spoil any more, just in case you fancy seeking it out. So, I might pick up polka records, they're not too far from Tex-Mex. Cheers - Hedley
I’ll send you something on Cracker Barrel. I’m glad I can provide something uniquely American to our cultural exchange, Hedley. You know, if there was some Zydeco in there, I would’ve grabbed it. Those boxes of records aren’t going anywhere, so I might go back to occasionally explore. That documentary sounds fascinating. I don’t get to watch things like that much anymore these days with the little ones taking up my time, energy, and TV. I had to post an homage to Godard to lead off this video. Cheers ✌🏻
Jon, hello Mr. Subtitles welcome back! Steve Carlson likes Polka! Tony Williams is liked by drummers! The wife says that haircut is tight! You have a great barber. Thank you Mr. Subtitles, why does Jon seem overly concerned about the value? Maybe he has misplaced his wallet recently. Show me a bunch of cheap records you love. That invasion of the body snatchers looks cool. Lol we are going to have to turn you into child services, your thought process is very left field and must go out of bounds quite often. You seem more like a Will Ferrell type of elf to me. Happy fall y’all! Say hi to the fam from the Zonkman
Zonkman! I’ll let Mr. Subtitles know you were happy to see him back. Steve Carlson likes everything. I’ll box up some polka for him. I thought the Invasion of the Body Snatchers was worth grabbing. A lot of cheesy soundtracks in those boxes. Who needs Lady In Red? I’ll tell my stylist my haircut has been noticed. Hope all is well friend. Cheers ✌🏻
Wow some quality titles to get for free there Jon. Library music is always interesting to find I think and great covers on those albums. By leaving it for 10 years do you think you picked out a lot of quality records that you would have probably left behind back then? If that's the case it was probably just as well you didn't pick through everything originally and think you were done with them... cheers Dale
You make a wonderful point, Dale. 10 years ago, I definitely would’ve grabbed the Miles and Herbie albums. The Reich, possibly, my reputation alone. But Ashby I had no clue about then, and I would definitely had passed on the Rudd. So, yeah, the timing worked out in the end. Thanks for hanging through this ramble. Hope all is well on your front. Cheers ✌🏻
You are just humble bragging with that Toy Factory talk aren't you. The only thing better would be if you've retired from the Toy Factory, but I suppose that's your primary life goal. And what a darn Hollywood ending with that Grail soundtrack. Oh and Mr. Subtitles being back at work is the cherry on top!
The Toy Factory is a miserable place. No humble brag to be found here. I have a feeling we will start seeing multiple copies of Ice Castles show up in videos across VC land. Cheers, Elliott! ✌🏻
sounds like the timing was just right to go through those records, if you weren't ready for them years ago then so be it.... give that Tony Williams a chance to grow on you, some wicked sh!t.... and you just aquired a modest library section, some very cool titles..... it's well known that toy makers are the most miserable people on earth which is why l tend to believe your toy factory schtick :)
I would have grabbed the Miles, Hancock ten years ago. I would have probably picked up the Reich just because of name. I had no idea who Dorothy Ashby was ten years ago. So, yeah, the timing did work out. It was you that showed a Roswell Rudd album at some point right? I know I said “recently” but I meant back before you took a break. The Tony Williams does have some great stuff, but the guitar is what is hit or miss for me. I’m looking forward to going through the library titles. Sad bastards make for excellent toy makers because they don’t stop to play with the toys. Cheers, Sherv ✌🏻
