Hi Grace! I’ve been watching you for years as you were always one year ahead of my law school/bar taking journey and you have honestly been so helpful, inspirational, and like my law school big sis! I just found out yesterday that I failed the first bar exam I have taken, and immediately found myself rewatching these older videos for comfort. Thank you for being so vulnerable and real about your journey, because failing can feel really lonely (especially through the lens of social media, where your feed is full of others’ celebrations). Today I signed up for the next bar exam and I am feeling very motivated for my second try, with your help and inspiration! 💕

  • @suzannadannaTARDIS

As someone who works in instructional technology, creating learning that is memorable, I'm SO glad you put this out there.
There are numerous studies that have proven that WRITING notes helps you to encode the knowledge better than anything else. Typing does not do it, only writing.
When using flash cards, a good strategy with them is to do a pass of them, putting correct in one pile, the incorrect in a different pile. Once you've gone through them all, pick up the incorrect cards and run through them again, correct in one pile, incorrect in a different pile. Keep doing this, continuing to drill the one you get wrong. It helps you to learn the things you don't know much better that doing all the cards over and over.
You are absolutely correct that the test taker knows *something* about the content. During my master's program, I took a comp exam that contained 4 subject areas, I was convinced I bombed one of them. When I asked the professor (who is now my major professor in my doctoral program) how I did on that topic area, she said '"you clearly understood the theory if not the procedural - and we're more concerned that you understand the reasons WHY we program content the way we do more than 'first you do x, next you do y, then you do z."
In a sense, it's like your advice for the MPTs. You know the process, you know the important components, if you miss a statement, at least you get points for following proper procedures.
Also, whenever possible, study and prepare in an environment that duplicates your test-taking situation. Like you said, you took the multiple choice online, so you didn't bother with the book. Any test takers who will take their Bar at their law school: GO study, write essays, answer multiple choice, outline MPTs IN the lecture hall/gymnasium/classroom where the Bar will be admistered. Duplicating the environment as much as possible greatly improves your ability to recall the information.
Sometimes, all it takes is a moment to close your eyes, breathe, and calmly tell yourself 'I answered this when...' to bring it back.
    Ctrl F is your friend!
Laughing about the 'if you think you failed, you passed.' While I was waiting for my score, I asked one of the professors grading them "what happens if I fail?" and they actually shared with the entire class (since I think 8 of 11 of us in the class had taken it), if you get two sections wrong, you have to take 2 more classes the next semester to retake the comps. If you bomb one, one of us brings you in to the office and asks you questions on the topic area you blew to determine whether you understand it and just had a case of the nerves.
Again, write to encode/paraphrasing reinforces memorization of the information. For me, speaking the information in a two way dialogue with others is even more effective than writing. My suggestion would be to have a study partner, and ask each other questions (like an essay question) and the process of answering, speaking about 'oh, I need to confirm this, the burden of proof is that, legal precedence is blah blah blah' while figuring out what you want to say is a HUGE help overall.
For a strong student, this reinforces things, but it tremendously improves the performance of a weaker student, too.

Negligence: Duty, breach (standard of care), actual causation/proximate causation, and damages. Also, the defenses of assumption of the risk, contributory negligence, and comparative negligence (pure and partial) are incorporated into an essay answer as well. That should cover it.
