Kuwait has so many street cats & purebreds. Here’s why-and how to help!

  • Kuwait has no animal shelter, leading to a widespread issue of cats being dumped outdoors. Individual rescuers are stepping in to help these cats, who are often Persian, Scottish fold, British shorthair, and Arabian mau, and typically seeking homes for them abroad. Thank you Laila (@rescueforwinston) and Mona (@mcclq8) for sharing your stories, and for all you do to help cats.

They seem like wonderful cats. As a long-time feline rescue volunteer with chronic health problems, I would love one. I need an affectionate baby to love when I’m stuck in bed. My Burmese just passed away at 19…he was the cat I was closest to in life. A constant cuddle companion! I’ve had two random bred cats just like that, though. I adopted them as seniors, so I didn’t know them as long but they bonded very closely with me. Both looked like they had British Shorthair in them. Big bones…big teddy bears! I guess I felt closest to the Burmese because he followed me to every room, and advocated for my needs with my carer, when I was ill. He would not eat until I was fed.

May God continue to blessvand protect you for the most noble work that you both are doing for these darling furry angels. So sad to know know that people just dump their cats and kittens at a different environment just because they have decided not to keep them any more. I have a Kuwaiti kitty. He's a purebred Scottish Fold, brought to the US by the South Texas Persian Rescue, operating out of San Antonio, Texas (they've Adlai brought over lots of mixed kitties from there). He is the sweetest, most loving cat I have ever met. He took a long time to understand what laps were, but now he never wants to get out of them. My life wouldn't be the same without him, and I can't recommend these sweet children enough.

We’re starting to have a similar situation here in Saudi Arabia. Many people adopted cats during the pandemic due to boredom and not being able to go out, and now that life is back to normal they’re claiming they’re way too busy to take care of them so they throw them out.
My mom and I try bringing food to those cats especially in our neighborhood, there were usually 3-5 cats but these last few weeks the numbers are increasing and I think we see over 12 cats just in our neighborhood. Really heartbreaking to see

breeders and purebred cats aren't the problem of overpopulation. It is all the alley cats, that owners refuse to spay or neuter and then let them roam the streets, or just dump them in the streets per this video. Look at ALL these cats---99% random bred, not purebred. The Arabian Mau breed she talks about, not purebreds either. A purebred is a cat that you KNOW several generations of it's ancestry. Boy there are a lot of eye infections in all those cat 😢 I really liked that smoke/tabby young male cat and the one she pointed out as an Arabian Mau---they looked fairly healthy.

I took her to the vet she's clean and healthy, and I am in the process of getting her all her vaccines. She has long fur and is pure white, probably wasn't a street cat for too long she was 5 months old. I heard some rescue organizations here are trying the TNR strategy I hope it works

I get that times can be hard, but in my opinion, that’s no excuse to not at least find a good home, or just don’t get a pet at all if you know your situation could become precarious in the future unless you aren’t all in. So, most people either put the cats in a cat hotel which costs about 30 USD per day or they have to sell them or release them outside. It is a very sad situation.

We’d hold free cat shows to reward good care and socialization of random bred cats, after the education series. I’ve seen kids and parents grow so much in their relationships with animals! I also do feline rescue. People dump cats near farms and in cities, thinking they’ll find shelter and a food source. They live painfully, and die horribly. Statistics in the 2000s said if we each adopted 3 cats, we would solve the problem. I know it’s not an opinion for everyone but, if it is, please adopt! ❤️‍🩹

Sending dumped cats overseas to be adopted is not an impactful change. It is shifting the burden onto other countries (in this instance, America), where additional animals (cats in this instance) must be euthanized because the American didn’t adopt a cat from the shelter down the road, but from Kuwait instead!
p.s. I know this sounds mean, and I am not intending that. It’s just that we must all wake up and realize that globalization does not solve anything, it just shifts the misery away from one country onto another, at the expense of the animals, and allows our leaders to remain unaccountable for helping solve pet overpopulation.
