Yes, the magi were likely protoges of Daniel. There is also the speculation that Daniel left the gifts as an inheritance for the Messiah. He had no heirs, having been made a eunuch when he was brought in captivity to Babylon. Having served under several kings he would likely have been very wealthy by the time he died. Pliny writes of magi in Chaldea, Ethiopia, Armenia, Gaul, and Egypt. Only Chaldea was east of Palestine, so it is the only attested area that fits. And yes, Jerusalem would have been in quite an uproar with their arrival there.
Just curious: all this makes sense but wondering now ... with all the treasures and gifts given, how did Joseph travel by night to Egypt with all of the treasures?

Both him and Mary had several other children which also had children! Both after their deaths faded into the background of history! Around 300 AD religious men began to elevate Mary in attempt to deify her by 430 AD a religious sect established the Catholic Church and made her the focus and Jesus was a secondary person. Neither Joseph or Mary wanted such attention. To some degree King James scholars played along with eliminating Joseph from the story! But Jesus had several brothers and sisters only His four brothers are named. Mary and Joseph left Israel for Egypt for two years then returned it was at least three years before the second child would be born so Joseph was with Mary at least 15 years after the return to Nazareth but his focus was working and providing for the family
