I love Mr. Hillberry's videos. I paid to take instructions from an artist and quit after a month. The videos are exactly what I was looking for and I'm anxiously awaiting my order to get started.
Now this is what I call a lesson. When I see how it's done I learn better to do it myself. I don't have a liking in video tutorials where the process is explained. Show me is how I learn and enjoy the most.

All those years at art school... I wish TH-cam videos were available back in the very early 90’s - great video. Knowing what the tools are and techniques is invaluable. Thank you :)
CrumplyPizza I think artists should always strive for "better" artwork than their reference. That doesn't always mean more realistic. Once you get good enough with your techniques and understanding of light, it opens a whole new world - rather than just copying a photo.
You have such an artistic talent! Your art should belong in a museum or something. When you're copying a photo, I could usually never tell the difference! I hope I can be as good as you one day! So glad I came across your channel.
Purchased your tutorial, and I am learning a lot already! I was in the middle of a commissioned drawing of a horse, and I began adding charcoal after watching tutorials, and I can already see a huge difference!
+Nancy Mabry I'm glad you are enjoying the tutorials. I've seen my techniques make an amazing difference in people's artwork. I'm so happy it help you.
This is absolutely amazing. It always fascinates me how adding the smallest amounts of graphite can manipulate a shape and make it appear to lift off the page. I have two incredible artists in my family line, my cousin and my great-grandfather. I always thought they had some sort of superpower that enabled them to create life-like drawings and paintings. The more I learn about--and practice--drawing, the more I realize that their main superpower was patience and technical skill. It takes a LOT of patience it to develop this level of skill. JD, I'd love to know if you always had a lot of patience and you applied it to drawing or if drawing helped you developed patience. This is my biggest weakness. I love to draw, but I always feel like I need to finish a drawing i 1 or 2 sessions.
Hi Jeff, I don't think I have any more patience than anyone else. People get impatient when they aren't enjoying the activity. You have to train yourself to enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Some people call this "getting in the zone". When time flies by as you are drawing you can go for hours and it feels like minutes. Sometimes it helps to do drawing exercises that don't result in a finished drawing. Try practicing getting gradual values from dark to light. That way, there isn't a real destination so it forces you to enjoy the act of putting pencil to paper.
the only tutorial on internet which actually helped me to improve instantly.. all other just keep telling me techniques i know already! ... I subscribed!
I'm going to go out on a limb here and claim that I learned more from this tutorial than I have from any other speed drawing on YT. Hello sir! Firstly I would like to thank you endlessly for your generosity of sharing your very special talent on here with very detailed videos and so many tips, secondly, I'd like to say that you are one of the reasons that I will work hard and take time to draw :) so have a good day and please carry on!
I haven't seen this tutorial for a while, but I appreciate it even more now than before! I've learnt a lot from the J.D. Hillberry tutorials, and I always find new great tips when I revisit the clips! Thanks :D
I'm sitting over here for the longest time going up in values from H-8B... still not getting the portraits to look just right... then I see this guy using the 9XXB BY ITSELF and getting these results. Thank you for the tip(s)!!
I used to back away from drawing faces as it intimidated me, that's why I stuck to landscapes. Now, I feel with the right tools..I could give it a go! Fantastic job!

I always try to keep tow things in mind; First, it's only a piece of paper with some graphite on it and secondly, I can learn more from my mistakes than my successes.
Thanks, Matthias! I think the goal for realistic pencil artists should be to improve upon the reference material they are using. We can leave out distracting elements and enhance other areas to create our own version of the subject.
Wow! All these tips are actually very very helpful! I always have problem with having obvious pencil strokes on my portraits, using stumps and bamboo blender will definitely help. Thank you so much for taking time to do this!
Man you're great! love the way you explained the tools. watched the whole video without getting bored. Lastly, gotta listen with rapt attetion to your suggestions too!
I've never thought to use measuring tools before. I always eyeball it (no pun intended), and my drawings seem to be pretty hit and miss. I only draw very occasionally and as a hobby, no real formal lessons, so this is very encouraging. Thank you!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. There are many different ways of using the measuring tools also. You can "eyeball" some key features first, then use the measuring tools to check to see how accurate you are. This will help you learn to be much more accurate at eyeballing it if you choose to continue to do it that way. Or, you can take some precise measurements to start with like I did in this drawing. There are no rules in art. YOU are the one that gets to choose how you create YOUR artwork.

Mate I've been watching your vids today and you are awesome. I hope you don't own a camera because you just don't need the damn thing. I have seen a few people who draw on the internet, that are somewhere on the scale in your league and you guys just blow me away every time I see what you guys can do. I love art in any form so do photography and its certainly my passion in life, but to be able to create something as detailed as a photo, with your own hands and skill, is truly a gift. Hi Helen. I'm glad you are enjoying my videos. As far as drawing very small faces, I suggest you try to leave the very small highlight white rather than erase it.
