HI FRIENDS!!! Welcome back to Party at Kat's (aka my 2nd channel!). Today, I'm going to talk about all the things I learned in the woods. As I'm sure you guys know (because I feel like I talk about it 24/7) I just finished up a run of INTO THE WOODS. We performed for the last 3 months, but we were cast in November. I've been playing and learning about Rapunzel for the last 5 months-- so I thought I'd share some of the things I've learned along the way. :)

That saying you quoted is from the Bible and it's known as the Serenity Prayer and it's actually a bit longer that. That's my favorite prayer because it got me through a lot like school, bullies and the death of my parents. It a good quote for life in general.

I love this prayer, and the fact that you just shared it with so many people. Even if you don't believe in a God, it is applicable to so many situations and it helps me so much. Thanks for sharing this😊
I did a Broadway workshop some time ago with Krystal Joy Brown who is currently Eliza in Hamilton and she taught me this and it has been super helpful! There are some things in theatre that you just have no control over, but you should try your hardest to change the things you do! 😊🤍

The part about suddenly having a big group of friends after having none/very few hit me so hard cause that was completely my experience before I came to college. Suddenly having friends after mostly being alone for so long really does make you appreciate them more. In any case, loved this video and very much appreciated and related to the advice ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

I’m pretty much like you, wanting to make everyone feel involved and making sure everyone is happy. It does sting when the people you offer your kindness to just abuse it. I've done into the woods!! It was so much fun!!! I played Jack's Mother and my best friend played Milky White!!! So much fun and I was so happy that we got to do it together!

I really needed that “dont let the show run you” kinda thing because I do that EVERY SHOW IM IN !! And its really really bad when my shows run for a month or so lmao.
I'm the same way as you with the kindness thing. I talked to my counselor about it, and she said that it's okay for me to be kind and caring, but I need to have boundaries. For me, this is difficult because I love being the person who makes people feel great because I know what it's like to be the one left out, and it's hard even when I know I'm doing it for people who wouldn't do the same for me

really enjoyed this video. Sometimes it can be easy for me to feel like Kat is perfect because she's so bubbly and nice, but it was really nice hearing her talk about her flaws and then i remember that everyone is still human💗💞
I've had to learn the lesson of not freaking out over the small stuff the hard way, whenever something goes wrong (either with a show or with life in general) I would beat myself up over it for weeks (sometimes longer) I'm gonna have to write out that saying you mentioned and keep it with me.
P.s a tip for all the actors, please be kind to the crew for the show you're in. I'm currently working as a dresser for a production of beauty and the beast, and it's really appreciated when the cast members do even the simplest things like remembering your name or even noticing you exist. We're not saying you have to be our new best friend or anything like that. But we all prefere working with people who treat us with respect. A simple thank you gose a long way.

I know exactly what you mean when you were talking about the whole "I'm a pure an innocent disney princess" and about people taking advantage of that, because I'm exactly the same way. Also Katherine I love that you embrace that disney princess side, you're just a very sweet, kind and lovable human being! You're just the best :)

so i’m in a sorta arts-dry community (due to a lack of funding, sports emphasis, etc., yanno. the usual.) and as a result i haven’t had a lot of access to really meaningful mentorship in theatre- so your wisdom as a performer, and person in general, means the world!! watching your stuff feels like sitting down with a smart, experienced friend who knows the ropes and wants to help you along, too. thanks for this video and everything else.

How did you make friends with the other cast? I'm in The Little Mermaid right now and my friends are in the other cast and I know one person in my cast and I'm not good with talking to people. So do you have any tips to make friends with my cast of strangers?
It's definitely a little awkward at first, but start with people you're sitting next to or walking into rehearsal with. Just start making small talk--ask them about their day!
I'm shy too. My advices are really bad and don't laugh, ok? But baking cookies or something like that works for me xD (not very heavy like SUPER CHOCO CAKE)

AHH today is opening for night for the musical I’m in, Cinderella!! I’m sooo pumped
On that first point, most of the kids in my community children’s theatre are younger than me (is 16) and with eighteen performances (six shows a week) plus tech week and dress rehearsals, a lot of kids burn out fast, especially the younger ones or the ones newer to theatre. We are told to give 110% for every show and many of the kids will last the first week then get tired and burned out, sometimes even not doing another show at the theatre after their first show (this happened to the sweetest eight year old who, along with me, got a lead role for an intense show her first time and with the intensity of the process plus drama and bullying, she was discouraged from ever acting again
I completely agree with everything you said in this video! I just finished a production recently and I cannot express how stressful some of the people were and how negative they were and I stopped hanging around those people and all my friends thought I was being stupid and dramatic (I can be dramatic so I don't blame them) But even though my best friends didn't support my decision I was so much happier and eventually they came around and realised what I had. I am a person who wants to involve everyone and the amount of times I was taken advantage of and just being able to realise that not everyone is thinks the same way you do is crucial in life. Being able to step back and remove yourself from the situation and just think is one of the best things I have learned in my life! Love your vids! X

this was so helpful. i have an audition in less then a week with a company i’ve never worked with before. i’m nervous, if i land the role, about fitting in and working with the cast. this relieved so much anxiety!

Heya! When you find yourself buying your next wig, I recommend using Arda Wigs. They have soooo many options to choose from that are reasonably priced and high quality. They also have a wide variety of lacefronts that are also decently priced. They also don’t start to fall apart the minute you start brushing them, which is great compared to amazon wigs!
omg i feel the SAME way!! i'm a sophomore in highschool and i've never rlly done theatre before but i thought i'd give it a shot to audition for our schools musical and i made it!! but then i realized i didn't know anyone in the musical but once i stopped just sitting by myself and wishing i had someone i just went up to someone and just started talking, and now i have amazing friends from theatre for doing something i wasn't even sure i would make!!
I am so, so grateful for your videos. I'm currently studying theatre in college, and have been feeling a bit unsure of my journey and the environment here. Watching you work as hard as you do and seeing your love for theatre reassures me that my dream isn't dumb, and that I get out what I put into it. I soooo get a lot of what your saying. Sometimes advice (of any kind) is meant to prompt or simulate some sort of emotion towards an understanding. I'm not sure if that made sense but I guess what I'm trying to say is that you can understand something from afar but you can only ever feel what it's like to live IN those ideas if you never go out chasing those moments to know what it's like to live those ideas. This especially applies to me with social anxiety and it's really nice to see that I can relate to you in this way. It makes all the difference when you're willing to throw yourself at people and know that either way you will be ok. Possibly even better. Beautiful as ever, sorry for the word vomit of a comment. i’m so happy and proud hearing all the things you’ve learned. i don’t have anywhere to do theatre near me but i do sing with a wonderful group of people in more casual performances, and it’s honestly opened me up so much. like you, i’ve always been afraid of doing things out of my comfort zone and talking to new people, but i now have this wonderful group of friends that i’m still getting to know and i’m just proud of myself for finally taking charge and making these friends.
I’m actually playing Elle in legally blonde currently, and I definitely couldn’t have gotten this role without watching your amazingly helpful videos :)

omg Kat, I feel the difficulty in not having your life taken over by theatre. I broke my foot badly last year and just had my foot reconstructed so now I can't do any theatre, and it's so hard learning to cope
Thank you Katherine.. I loved how open you were in this video! I do so many of the things you mentioned, like giving too much and not wanting to realise that people take advantage of that. However I'm also trying to do the opposite of what you said about saying yes and going out with firiends, old and new. I have always had a problem with saying no, I'm always giving too much of my time for others and even though I don't like it and even though I'm afraid my friends will like get offended if i continue saying no, i feel like i have to, to get some work done and get my life in check

as a fellow only child, i can totally relate to you. I have trouble making new friends, but after i did my last production at school, i found myself talking to more and more new people. I really hope i can make even more friends soon!
So interesting!! I loved listening to this..! I honestly had to stop the video, after your comment of 'be a generous scene partner'... I'm in a show at the moment (Peter/Wendy), and I really had to think of myself as an actor, and how/ if at all (!) I set up my fellow actors generously, or coordinate so they are the focus... Aah - something I will consider for sure! Xx (Equally, hearing of how you 'keep it fresh' - this is exactly the kind of wisdom/advice I was needing... I love Peter Pan/ Peter/Wendy so much, so it's kinda hard when you want to perfect everything and just 'press play' for your personal performance, when I could/should really be listening) A ramble! I really loved this video! It was a good reminder for me about a lot of things. Something that I really loved was the part about making friends. As a high schooler with very few friends it's nice to hear about someone college age being able to make really good friends with people. I keep holding onto the hope that things will get better and be different for me once I get out of high school. It was awesome to hear that things are going well for you now!

I was Rapunzel last year - my school mucked up an order for our set, instead of buying wood chip for the forest floor they somehow managed to order a mixture of wood chip and manure. As you can imagine, being thrown to the floor by the witch wasn't too pleasant - although I did have a soft landing!
I love this! I'm sure it'll be a while before I need to use some of these in a theatre setting, but I'm sure I can apply most of these to everyday life! I'm so happy you made a second channel, it's so great so far!!!
I also relate sooooo much about the only child stuff, its not easy for me to make friends either.

I was in a play called Trojan Women where I did the whole thing crawling on the floor. Originally I didn't have knee pads but then they gave me some. Even with the knee pads I still got bruises. It was totally worth it, but stage floors are hard! This is all excellent advice.
LOVE this video, these are tips I really needed to hear before I get into a new show! like I just moved to a brand new area, and I totally relate to making friends and stuff. it’s tough, but when you’re forced to be in that uncomfy position, it can really stretch you and help you grow. and like you said, it can bring you to some of the best people you never knew you needed. 💕

It’s the opposite for me... when I was a kid I was almost too extroverted and people get annoyed 😂 So now I’m much shyer and tend to leave them human alone 🤷🏻♂️
