I had one of these players back in the 80’s but mines had the darkened half plastic cover and I think note as a Technics SL-6 and loved it. I just got one off eBay and for $99. plus $22. to ship from another close by city in California and hope it works and preparing to expect some adjustments bc it’s a 40 year old unit.
I also got the Sony PS-Q3 that i always wanted for its cool factor bc it’s a he size of 35% of the record and the rest of the record spins outside the unit.
Yeah, many of these Technic compact vintage tt I’ve seen used had covers that had scratches or had a frosty look to them. I’m glad to know about the cord damaging it and that you can also buff the clear covers to make them look clean again.
Yeah, they put a lot of engineering and thought into these units and of they did that now, it would 10x more to create.

Hello. I have an SL-5 I obtained at a yard sale. I don't have speakers to hook it to, but I did want to try to turn it on and place a record on it to do a basic test. It seemed to me like the needle moves across the record too fast.. the needle moves fairly slowly across a record when it plays it.... Do you happen to know what might be going on here? Many thanks.

I really like this machine. The one thing I don't like is I have to be very careful not to scrape the top of the record against the sharp bottom of the lid when putting the record on and off the spindle. Other than that it's a fantastic player and sounds better than some very much more expensive modern decks.

@@ColetteO_ I'm not sure If I understand. the tonearm will move faster when if you move it across with the buttons or when it returns at the end of a side, when it is playing the tonearm advances according to the tracking circuitry. If you want to watch the tonearm drive in action, here is a vid of a SL-J33 playing, the drive mechanism for these Technics are all the same: th-cam.com/video/kbv4xVtgPYU/w-d-xo.html

@@mescko I put a record on the turntable and then I pressed the 'START' button. The needle lowers down onto the beginning of the record, but it glides across the record at a faster rate than a needle moves when it is normally playing a record. I watched the video you sent (thank you for that). Why did the tonearm move across to almost the middle of the record before it began playing? My tonearm moves like it did in the video, but it never slows down to play a song on the record. It just glides across at that faster pace and then returns back to its resting spot. Does that make sense? Anything I can do to fix it?

hello, if your not familiar with these, they have small a small rubber belt that goes bad and the turntable will have erratic action. Also has a rod that the stylus(needle) travels on that gets gummy from old grease. The center sleeve bearing may need a drop or two of oil.. Best to take it to someone who can do a basic service. If your adept, there are many how to videos on YT! good luck @@ColetteO_

I installed a new cartridge. The tone arm goes down but doesn't start on some records and retracts to starting position. Not always. But when it does start properly, it eventually starts to skip on every record. It may be the third or fourth track but will do so on every record. Help!!

the arm slides along a rail and has an up and down pivot, both may be cracked due to the plastic shrinking over a brass fitting, they can be fixed

I just got one from eBay and the needle is broken (no needle and just a cartridge). So I’m trying to figure out how to get the needle and cartridge off? I pulled on both the needle and cartridge and didn’t want to break . Then I see a round knob and I loosen and not sure if that gets the cartridge off?
Also, since I can’t get the cartridge off, I looked on eBay and not sure if they are interchangeable from brand to brand or have to stick with the same brand ? Or just change out the whole cartridge. But still, how do you get the cartridge off?

These tables used (and pioneered) the T4P cartridge system. The 'knob' is the head of a screw that makes sure the cartridge stays in. Unscrew it/pull it out, the the cartridge then pulls out of the end of the tonearm. These were originally fitted with Technics own cartridge. It will be a P22 or P23, maybe a P24, there were several in this line, they all use the same stylus, and are readily available in the aftermarket, from inexpensive conical up to line contact or even the JICO SAS. for the best sound, get the best one you can afford. The T4P system is standardized, any p-mount cartridge with the T4P logo will work, that's the beauty of the T4P cartridge.

Can anyone recommend what speakers/amplifier/cables I need for this player? Got the record player, power cable, ground cable but nothing else.
