A company named Hanpin makes the "guts" for a lot of these turntables. If you noticed the return mechanism underneath the platter is identical to one another. They've actually been producing this same design for several decades now albeit with minor changes like button placement etc... The platters are basically unchanged as well. If you noticed the underside of the Sony platter had a strobe ring. Even though it's useless on that model, there was a Pioneer version that did utilize the strobe function. There was a Aiwa model that was also similar. The newest model of the Sony is still the same on the inside... Sorry to be long winded. Just thought I'd share some of my "nerdness"! 😂
yours is one of a couple of videos bashing this model for all the wrong and ignorant reasons and all of you dont seem to know what you are talking about, if you paid 400$ for it, you got screwed, that's on you. second its a fully MANULA tt. third, the placement of the switch? really? have you seen where apple placed the power switch on their new mac mini? this is fine, you turn it on leave it. fourth. nucular? fr? you can get it for 250$.
I have one exactly like this and don’t know how to operate it. Do I need to get only speakers to connect it to and it’s ready ? Thanks
Interesting - looks like I'll have to pick one up...
There is an elliptical stylus upgrade from audio technica them selves
True! Good call.
Yamaha is a diverse manufacturer Audio Live and studio equipment Musical instruments Motorcycle Off road equipment Marine equipment Anything they put their logo on is well engineered and offer longevity
I agree. They tend to play closer to quality than getting too tied up aesthetics. I’ve had a Yamaha motorcycle, trombone, stereo, piano, canned tomatoes… those were delicious
I've always wondered about this issue--which sounds better. Rarely covered topic in hifi. I find a similar issue with dacs v. cd players of this era. The improvement seems marginal between 90's era Denon cd player and smsl dac. Thanks!
You nailed it. I love listening to editorials and dialog but it’s so hard to gauge “how does it sound”. I picked Marantz as the benchmark because their sound is fairly consistent throughout the last 50 years (with a few exceptions). Most people have heard a Marantz…. I hope! So, this serves as a reference, anchor and gauge… however you want to say it. Man, I’m listening to one of the upcoming receivers and holy crap! I can’t believe I picked this thing up for 200 clams…
I had a very similar model to this Yamaha back in the late 90's. The reason was I was moving up to dolby digital from a pro-logic Denon Receiver that I absolutely loved. I had a 7 model which put out 100 watts for around $700 new at the time. But I believe the R line of models by Yamaha were the low end units that were sold in the big box retailers of the day. I actually bought mine at a furniture retailer, lol, back when that was a thing. If you check on the net, I don't think you will see many reviews for the R series because most reviews went to the upscale lines that they had. These were largely ignored. Anyway long story short, I immediately disliked the sound compared to my Denon. It really sounded artificial to me, compared to the Denon. Clean and a good bottom end, but just thin and lifeless to me. I found the dialogue intelligibility for movies quite a downgrade as well. It had all the DSP modes that Yamaha was really pushing at the time. They were completely useless and sounded terrible. Sometimes I used the Jazz DSP for some music but mostly I kept them off. I think after a year and a bit I realized I had made a mistake and went back to a higher end Denon. I sold it to a friend who took it off my hands for 50 bucks. But I was glad to see it go. They aren't terrible receivers by any stretch but they are the cheaper built ones. Its evident in the weight of them. The DSP modes are useless, but the sound is clean and punchy I just never found them to sound that musical. At 120 bucks for 130 watts you can't go wrong and they aren't bad for home theater. But the one I had turned me off Yamaha amps for life. I never went back.
I have some Denons coming up… stay tuned… you may like what I have to say…
I have had a Yamaha amp since the 70s and I love them. The only one that has broke I fried trying to vacuum dust out of it. Leave the dust, the Yammy will run forever. I have an A-S801 now and it absolutely cranks
Stay tuned… I have a few more yammies in the mix… one is an absolute tank…
🎛😵💫
Wait for the next one… lol
it's weird but best of the best for sound are Harman Kardon late 70's amp HK 503 and HK 505 and Harman Kardon from the 80's HK385i or HK ps650
Stay tuned… HK is coming up… I there are several models
I have the same unit with the same problem.
I had a tuned Yamaha AX-570 which had nearly all parts exchanged for really good ones but I didn't like the sound. The NAD 3020 ran circles around it soundwise.
Ohhhhh…. Yes, an NAD is in this series… stay tuned.
I'm sure the Yamaha sounds great. (Until you need to fix it)
It’s been my experience that Yamaha’s last forever
@bigmacfullerton7870If it was true, everyone would ONLY buy Yamaha equipment.
@@brunoprimas1483 Not everyone is as smart as we are.
I have a VT 320 but it seems the RCA cable isn’t working anymore as it won’t play even though it rotates just fine
Picked up the Luxman RX-101 (suckface) for $5. It does power up but not investigated it more, yet. I'm sure it'll be an investment but could not pass up at that price. Thanks for encouragement in your video that it'll be worth it!
I've tried the other budget preamps that audiophiles rave about (art dj pre II and ifi audio zen) but they sounded like they were putting the records through a digital filter.....not very appealing to me.....the rolls is super clean and natural sounding. I've had it for a couple years now with a couple edifier speakers and a fluance table and I doubt you could find a better sounding setup for the price.
The Sony AV-880 (1986) is a departure from the pretty knobs and toggle switches. The VFD, an FM spectrum display, a GREEN push button, 100 + WPC, front panel inputs, and an MC/MM phono stage should keep my brother happy - I gave him the unit.
Dude!!!! You nailed it! Literally have the brother and sister of that queued up!
@@kappandrew1 I could have trained my lazy cat (Fritz) to run the machine (no knobs). Oh,well what the hell - just subbed.
You did something wrong when you registered. The recording with Pioneer is much quieter and it has a lot on hiss . However, the Pioneer sounded much more detailed and smooth .
Good feedback. I’ve been using a pretty high-end PC and components for recording, including dedicated audio boards in the PC itself. When I start the recording, I let the unit warm up for 5 minutes. The outputs from the back go through a reducer and into the PC. I use a 500 Hz signal and dial the amp/receiver to 75 dB, allowing the measurement to settle until it’s steady. Once everything is stable, I begin playing the songs. I follow this same procedure when listening to the units on the playlist. So, the lacking volume is likely the unit’s ability to maintain a flat volume across the sound spectrum. This isn’t bad, just the way they designed it. In short, the Marantz is probably just louder at 500 Hz. Again… just the manufacture’s preference in designing the unit.
I think what beats the Marantz hands down is the TWIN power HK series. 430 and 730. Great sound. POWERFUL low end, good separation-way more power than their power rating. Clean and satisfying. And way CHEAPER! Plus? People LOVE these with Klipsch speakers because the sound so tube-like. Want a great cheap vintage system? A pair of Dynaco A25s and an HK 430 Add a vintage TT of your choice.
Brother… I’m honest I goodness filming the HK 430 and the Marantz next. Listened to them together yesterday. Stay tuned! Oh, on the dynaco… you’re the third person this week to mention them. I need to get a pair again. It’s been a few years. Thanks for the comment!!!!!
That’s way newer than 91’ lol the first ones had cassette
I have an sl-5 and sl-7. Both work great. Had to replace the tonearm belt on the sl-5 and stylii on both but otherwise they are great. Love them.
Great video. What about a Mac 1900 vs the Marantz?
That’s a good idea!!! I need to find one now!
Great looking unit - would love to come across a 7065 in good condition!
Hi, Really enjoyed this video. How about a Technics against the Marantz?
Stay tuned… got a darn good one coming up!
Really …. How do they put the power switch in the back ? And not even semi-automatic - You’re 1000% correct, these were very poor design decisions by someone that should be fired.
Hello there. Try Sansui 881 vs Marantz .. cheers from North Baja México
Trying to source one now… I’ve got a 2000x and 5000x. One of those may have to do. 🫤
Latest Find .. Tubular Bells Slow-Speed Master A+ 4 a 🦌 at a Rummage Sale 😃
Thanks for this video! I’m just now cleaning up mine, after 20 years of not using. What needle, I mean stylus, would you recommend buying, reasonably priced, to replace the one that came with the turntable 50 years ago.
I had a Sony with really wild resonance once. Might still actually
I know a guy who had that exact same issue… he went to his doctor, got some pills, and now his bedroom life is back on track! Gotta play that love music without resonating…
I do similar mods to any vintage auto turntable with plastic chasis Nice job nice video
You are awesome! The plastic fantastic players are good… they just need some extra goodies.
@kappandrew1 I have Infront of me a Sansui FR-D3 vintage semi-auto DD turntable with plastic chasis.... I've done a very similar job under the plastic plinth with lead tape No feedback even in very loud volumes
The difference in spin down on a belt drive unit is irrelevant. The motor stops the platter stops. The difference is negligible in both instances and down to experimental error. Those units are junk. You know it, and I know it.
You are the god of all spin, oh mighty one! Thank you for gracing my humble video with your profound wisdom. Without your expert opinion, I would have been lost in the land of junk turntables forever. It must take real courage to fight the battle of belt drives from behind a keyboard-truly, you’re the Karen of quality control we all needed but never asked for! We are all so lucky you are here to save us!!! Good god… get a life.
The Marantz 2230 is the best sounding of the line because it does not have a protection circuit that strangles dynamics. The 2230 has great impact and decay of drums cymbals, piano key being struck or a guitar string being plucked for example.
Stay tuned… I’ve got some solid challengers coming up that are stupid cheap. (But they might be a bit ugly.)
Hey long shot but i found one of these at a thrift store and theres no tone arm missing. will any tone arm do or should i look for something specific?
I'm looking at a 2230 0n eBay sold(11/03/24) for$385.00 with a wood cabinet, not the prettiest wood cabinet(but a little work?) plus 16 bids on it so it looks legit. I don't count any sold items that don't show or have a single bid. I just looked at specs and noticed the 9100 integrated amp has twice the power rating of the Marantz. Are they in the same condition? One of my local repair shops , 'Stereo Rehab', only does full restorations down to the screws and fuse holders because he doesn't want to waste time on piecemeal repairs that will comeback with another issue. Personally, I don't care one way or another as I think most of these vintage receivers like Marantz and Mcintosh sound like a a bunch of homogenized mono mush. But I did notice a slight, better dynamics and upper frequency clarity with the Marantz. So there.
Mehhhh… yeah, this is true but look at how quickly those “low price” versions sold. Most often, anything south of $500 sells immediately. So, unless you’re hanging out on eBay all the time… you ain’t gonna get one for that price.
@@kappandrew1 Sure because they're low price. You seem to miss the point; myself, I could care less about vintage Receivers but I do know a little about eBay since I live near one of the largest mail order specialty audio and record outfits in the world and know a few of the sales staff and how they use eBay and what's real and not real on the site. You can put something up at any price you like but it's what it actually sells for that counts. Plus new products like Outlaws Receiver (2160?) annihilate those antiques; More neutral sound, better bass, better adjustments, a powerful amp stage that lead to a clearer view into the soundstage width, height, depth, breadth of sound, not to mention 21st century convenience features not to mention a very nice tuner. I replaced my Esoteric components with one of these at a 25th or 30th of the price for a month before giving it to a friend for a house warming gift. Was it as good as the Esoteric stuff? No, but it kept me engaged with the music and that's saying a lot. Hell it was even pretty good with MC phono cartridges on its own.
No, amps don't have a sound, IF they are working properly, and not overdriven. Also, comparing a recever to an integrated amp, is foolish.
My mom said you are just a bully and need a hobby.
@len9518 I can say absolute certainty, all amplifiers have their own sonic characters. I have owned and listened to so meny.
There must be some kind of signal in the brain of some people, when they see the center of a cone speaker that says, when activated, push me! I see it all the time and I always think, why do people do that? Probably kids but sometimes I wonder.😂
Original cartridge?
Very nice stereo
Hey, I have just bought one of this. I switched it on, and apparently all buttons are working and etc, however I’m not getting a clear sound. The sound is very “dirty”, especially when the music have more bass. Any idea what might be causing it? Could it be the cables running from the amp to the speakers?
I had a 2230, Marantz made back then (1970's) were indestructible and sounded great, I loved it. I should have bought more power though.2270 min... When the Chinese built Marantz came out a lot later, the material quality went to hell. Engineering was still done in the US & was great, but not the build. Still the sound quality was excellent.
Just saved one of these from getting trashed 9/10 condition. I’m hyped to test it out
I got one of these. It’s trash. All my records sound like they’re underwater. How are these even allowed to be sold? My gawd…. *facepalm*
Got one 3 days ago with an issue that it was playing for 5 mins. For 500$.When I got it it played 2 times and suddenly stopped. After taking apart found a transistor that was gone and replaced it. Now sound great.
My older brother still has his, original purchase from 50 years ago. And still going strong driving JBL's.
lots of favorite cds here
Excellent review of this unit! I have both an Onkyo TX-65 & an Onkyo TX-85. By far, the TX-85 is my choice, but by watching this video, I learned how to use the Dynamic Bass Expander. Thanks for this! Also thanks for your assessing some capacitors --- I don't know have to automatically replace them because of age.
I have the main belts now. And service lit soon. Does it use more belts?
While not perfect. The angle is still essentially 0° off at any given time . Compared to a pivoting arm it is juust a very small fraction of a degree off. Where as the pivoting arm is perfect in two places and upto more than a degree off depending on where it is on the record. Most importantly the linear tracking arm is very close to perfect every where, including the last track that is also highly compressed where the incorrect angle has a greater influence with elliptical and advanced shape stylus. The TP4 p-mount system also assures a correctly mounted cartridge and tracking force. If thr cartridge is TP4 compliant the the dimensions and mass are standardized. I personally would be careful about any type oil and solvents used on the Teflon slide bearig for the tone arm . The bearings are usually designed to be used "dry" . They have specific " oils" in the material to keep it conditioned. So you don't want to put the wrong kind of oil into it and the wrong solvents that may draw the conditioning oils out. My SL-7 has never been serviced and the arm is still tracking properly. It will eventually need a new belt and possibly the gear lube replaced with once again a lubricant that is made for plastic. Judging from how much that is involved in getting at the motor/platter bearing I suspect that thoes were a type of bearing that doesn't get traditional lubricant like a bronze oil bushing the lubricant is part of the bronze formula. So some of these do require periodic mantainence of the platter bearing and the correct oil should be used.
this helps. I love Rhapsody in Blue
