Monster 30kg Kingfish Off My Kayak In Auckland Harbour!

  • We made a last minute call to head down to the local kayak fishing spot at 5pm in the evening to hopefully get some dinner. The water at my chosen spot was real shallow, only about 3 meters at low tide with a muddy bottom. Snapper were biting all through the change of light and I managed a total of 4 keepers with the biggest being 53cm before hooking up to something powerful just as the sun went down. The first run pulled 50 meters of drag and towed my kayak and anchor 100 meters across the bay before the fish dived downwards. Fought the fish for a total of about 30 minutes but only managed to record 11 minutes of it. You must be careful when night fishing off a kayak as it is difficult for boats to see you and accidents could happen very easily. The fish ended up being a huge Yellowtail Kingfish rather than a big stingray or shark, which is a pretty rare catch within the Auckland City Harbour, as big kingi s generally prefer deep open water. Was very happy to be able to release the fish without it having any hooks or sinkers still attached to it, unlike what would've happened if the line was to be snapped. Estimated 1.35 meters long and 25-30 kilograms.

    Got to love the fight these fish are capable of,nothing like having that reel screaming and thinking..shit I've got to try and stop this!!.
    Well done on releasing it to fight another day

    • @saltnfreshwaternz1974
      @saltnfreshwaternz1974  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly haha especially on the first couple runs. Was an intense fight trying to prevent him from towing me into any structure or passing boats while not over-tightening the drag! Really wanted to have him up on my lap for a closer look, but decided to remove the hook with the fish in the water after seeing how difficult it would be.

    Excellent job on the fight. Shame you couldn't get him up for a pic. Obviously a very big King and i know how hard it is to drag one up onto a kayak. How long was the fight time ? Pretty insane for in the harbour too !

    • @saltnfreshwaternz1974
      @saltnfreshwaternz1974  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate!! Yes very difficult to safely land such a long fish, especially by dragging up the tail side. Total fight would've been around half an hour - hooked him in 3m of water and got towed out into the channel. Didn't get a chance to mount my gopro until it slowed down so the first half of the fight was not recorded

    Guessing you own a gaff now then. What a great kingi man! That would've been epic enough in daylight let alone in the dark. I was waiting for the monster shark to come up and swallow it hole with all the noise and light🤣😂
