It Took 215 Hours to Hand Sew a Victorian BERRY DRESS

- Turn myself into a Victorian embodiment of a berry? Why not!
Some of you have been following along with this historical fashion series, my hand sewing adventures of creating this four part Berry Dress. This might be a little confusing if this is your first time on the channel - but it's much like it sounds.. I love berries and so I wanted to make an entire historical fashion hand sewn ensemble inspired by them!
Before I show the grand reveal of the entire historical ensemble, I wanted to take you along one more journey, the construction of the final piece, the bodice.
This bodice is an 1860s style simple darted bodice which could be worn for either daywear or by the mid-1860s, for more formal wear. I paired it up with a gorgeous antique collar and a vintage brooch that looks just like a bunch of berries!
The entire ensemble took around 215 hours to hand sew, with the bodice taking around 70 hours. During my first year of sewing, I was really just trying to figure out how to make things work, but now since it's past that first year I am focusing my time mainly on perfecting fit, which is an ongoing thing for so many dressmakers.
I want to extend a big thanks to Lauren of VirtuousCourtesan for answering many of my fit questions. Be sure to go and follow her on Instagram if you love looking at gorgeous handmade garments:

Thanks so much for watching! I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year (full of sewing, if you sew 😊)
I say 250 hours in the video, but really mean *215* hours. I must have been tired whilst I was recording!
Its absolutely gorgeous, I can see this getting worn a lot by you.
@@RychaardRyder thank you!! It’s definitely going to get worn a lot 😊
Young lady, this is a delightful channel. What I like best is how there are no gimmicks or antics. You give very good information about historical garments and your filming is measured and intricate. You should have 100000 followers! But, I hope you will retain the integrity of your channel as you are a breath of fresh air!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it😊 I will need to bring in sponsors at some point (ethical ones of course) as I don’t get paid any money from my videos on TH-cam, and in order to keep my quality up and continue posting, I’d like to stop working 2 full time jobs for the pay of only one 😅
we’ve been “patient”??? vasi u completed this so quickly!!!! and to such a high degree of quality. not only am i in awe of this stunning 4 piece ensemble, but your outros are getting increasingly impressive. this one was so captivating and cinematic, i’m envious. overall wonderful job and a great project to end the year with. i can’t wait for what ever else you have in store for the coming year!!!🥰💓
Hahaha thank you so much Jae 😊 And thanks for noticing the outros always! They're the most exciting part to edit, film, plan, and colour grade usually. I have a few really fun projects already planned for 2022 and I'm excited for you to see them 💕
Oh Vasi, your berry dress makes you look like you just time traveled right out of a Victorian dream. This dress is just so beautiful on you, and I love all of the accessories you have chosen to wear with it. Cheers, my dear! I, personally, am so excited to see what's up next 😁
Thank you so much Sami!! 😊 The next sewing project I'll be releasing is a little more on the practical/simple side, and then I have something fun and a bit abstract planned for later in 2022 😉
Same!! So excited to see what’s next.
This turned out _berry_ nicely. A very _tasteful_ ensemble. 😁
Lol 😂 thank you!!
So glad to find someone who loves the Victorian Era too, it's hard to find good videos and movies like this, subscribing!!😍
Oh what a truly wonderful craftsperson
you are and so beautiful
Thank you!
Lovely results! Might I suggest trying petersham ribbon for future projects instead of grosgrain? They look very similar, but the difference is in the ribbon edges. Grosgrain has a sealed edge, while petersham has a scalloped edge that is woven in with the rest of the ribbon. Because of this edge difference, petersham goes around curved edges much more easily. Thanks for sharing this entire project with us!! Happy sewing!
Thank you!
It’s interesting because I used the grosgrain due to an instruction by Janet Arnold in PofF2 for an 1890 walking suit, where the original had grosgrain. Petersham makes way more sense, as you suggest, but I’m curious as to why the original dressmaker of the walking suit from 1890 chose to use grosgrain for that. I guess the mystery will continue! I’ll definitely have a go though at using petersham in the future as I’ve had a lot of success with them as stay tapes. Thanks for the tip 😊
@@VBirchwood Grosgrain is great for things like stay tape, because it's a straight edge and because the sealed edge of the grosgrain adds stability. For curvy things (like a neckline that needs to curve around your neck, yet lay flat against your shoulders) petersham wins. Petersham is often harder to find, but I think you would find it's usefulness pleasing if you gave it a try. I use both in tandem, but not interchangeably. =D
I definitely see what you mean 😊 those scalloped edges help a ton. I just wonder why the dressmaker from the 1890s reversed the use and used petersham for stay tape and grosgrain for binding hahaha
you look so beautiful. I just love the way you make the styles of dresses and capes your own. They are unique to you.
Thanks so much! 🥰
Absolutely stunning! This is just so nice to look at visually. Modern garments just can't compare.
Thank you so much!! Historical garments certainly have their charm 😊
Beautiful!
Thank you 😊
Wow this turned out so pretty 🍓♥️! And I love the part with you in the woods by the stream, very romantic and fitting. And not too short, ( some TH-camrs make frustratingly short reveals of the finished garments) Here I enjoyed having time to properly see all the details!
Thanks so much! My favourite type of footage to edit, colour grade, film, etc. is more of the cinematic reveals, so it's often the treat I give myself for all the hard work throughout the rest of the process. And so I'm glad you (and others) enjoy the extended reveals too! I'm a professional singer so I often imagine fashion and video footage to music, so it makes for a fun experience putting all the reveal elements together 😊
Yes yes!!! I could of watched this reveal even longer it was so perfect
Beautiful dress. You should be so proud of your finished project! BTW spelt grosgrain, pronounced growgrain.
Thank you 🥰
Your garments are lovely and I look forward to you strengthening your tailoring skills to obtain the perfect fit.
I'm surprised that we don't see you ironing when you show how you have made your garments. Ironing or pressing (through a damp cloth and *lifting* the iron between applying pressure to each area, not using an ironing movement) will give that extra edge of smartness and accuracy to a garment. Ironing on the wrong side of each seam will open out the seam allowances ready for whatever treatment you next give them, and crisp up the look of the seam on the right side. For curves, use a tailor's ham instead of a flat ironing board. Using an iron will add time, of course, but the improvement in the finished garment is more than worth it.
Happy New Year, and very happy sewing, Vasi! 🥳🍻😅😉
Thank you Katherine!
I do indeed iron and press everything, I just do it off camera as it’s a bit complex to film myself ironing a lot of the time as sometimes I go and complete it in the other room and I have a big lighting set up that I normally film with. I use a tailor’s ham as well as you mention. I typically don’t include every single step in the videos as it can get a bit redundant, so I just try to include the most important bits 😊 wishing you a happy new year!!
@@VBirchwood You are so kind as this Grandma teaches you to suck eggs!
As others have said, the camera work on your videos is lovely, too. You make the most of the beautiful natural settings and I have to watch at least twice to admire the dresses properly and then the scenery!
Happy New Year, dear!
Thanks so much Katherine! 😊
Ну, вылитая Джейн Эйр, браво!!!

Very interesting. Thank you. It was nice to see the extants.
Thanks for watching 😊
Just so gorgeous!

Beautiful ❤️! Happy New Year and Blessings to All!
Thank you Lisa! Happy new year 🥰
What a beautiful accomplishment! It looks great, and you look so natural in it.
Thank you so much!
Wow! The ensemble is beautiful and the cinematic reveal is chef's kiss!
Thank you Natalie! 😊
Excellent work! I do believe you get better with every filming. You have a wonderful sense of lighting from all of that photography. We really live and wait for this kind of quality. Thank you for caring and taking the time with it. I just wish you had a million views! You deserve that. I can also tell now that you live in the UK with all that moss! I live in OR where we have a similar climate. But more coniferous trees; most of the deciduous trees are imports. The color combo actually works well, all in all, just amazing, really. On par with the other amazing costubers.
Thanks so much A. R.! I actually lived in OR for a short while, and I love how similar the climate here in the UK is to it 😊We even get similar old growth forests. Before moving to the UK I lived in Iceland for almost 5 years, and big, old trees are one of the things I missed the most!
I really appreciate all of the compliments!
Wonderful dress, so much work, but it is stunning! I love this colour!
Thank you very much 😊
Really beautiful, love that color dance the light does on the loden silk, feel the energy of that huge tree and history it has seen in a historical garment that it may just have seen a similar silhouette before in it’s time in the forest. I really have no idea how old the tree is but that’s where my mind goes during the montage at the end.
Thanks so much Suzanne! I believe it was you in the skirt construction video who asked to see the dress spinning, so that's specifically why I got that shot for this video 😊I might be getting some detail here wrong as it was a while ago and a lot has happened in December haha. The tree is old-growth so I'm guessing quite old and someone in the 1860s could very well have stood by it! Quite amazing to think about.
This was a very educational video! For some reason, bodices scare me even more than corsets.
Also, _wow_ the final dress is _soooooo_ pretty!!! Congratulations on finishing the project! Your work definitely paid off!
Thanks so much Luna!
That makes perfect sense since bodices are seen on the outside and at least with corsets, any mistakes are hidden under clothing. Bodices are definitely a very overwhelming garment!
I have been enjoying hand sewing my own dress along with you! But I'm not finished yet, I guess I will have to rewatch the series!
Awww how lovely! What type of dress are you making? Thanks for watching (and rewatching 😊)
@@VBirchwood I'm working on a 1878 dress to mimic Jane from Disney's Tarzan. I'm really enjoying watching you, keep it up! And hope you have a great new year ahead!
Ah awesome! That sounds like so much fun. Thanks so much for watching 😊
This was such a pleasure to watch. An absolute pleasure. This is beautiful Vasi just absolutely beautiful. ❤️
Thank you Drew ❤️❤️❤️
Hello,
I am in absolute awe of the amazing work that you have done! I enjoyed watching your Berry dress being created. It was for me, more like watching a film at the cinema , rather than a TH-cam video on my tablet. The colors you chose are so beautiful, and have such richness and movement , even a bright freshness befitting your berry theme! Your talent for hand sewing is growing rapidly. I have been watching, and learning a great deal from you since your first video. I had appreciated your teaching style from the beginning and I am very grateful that you didn't loose that quality as you became so adept with hand sewing. I also had commented early on that the thoughtfulness you had towards inclusiveness was such a lovely thing to see these days. You are sensitive towards people without being pretentious. In both being thoughtful that not all people would be able to afford a bunch of sewing notions, and you didn't have to in order to learn and sew with you. As well as you are very welcoming towards everyone. I also appreciate your tenderness towards our beautiful planet. I would just like to say thank you for all of that. Our world and it's inhabitants are in great need of kindness, thoughtfulness ,teaching of good things and of learning. You are doing these things with just beautifully!
With sincerity, Audri

Hi Audri!
Thank you so much for all the compliments and incredibly lovely comment. I really appreciate your viewership and support (from the very beginning). I'm glad as well that you enjoyed watching this video so much!
Yours, etc.
Vasi
This is a masterpiece. Not only the beautiful garment you made (which is spectacular in construction and color), but the style of filming and how educational this is. I learned so much and at the same time I am blown away by the beauty of this video. You are so talented and I can't wait to see what you make in 2022. С новым годом! 💐
Thank you so much Царевна Мария 😊 с Новым годом!
You achieve the most amazing projects! I do love and prefer hand sewing but you excel abundantly in this skill. Never mind having sewn for only over a year, I think it's in your blood! The dress is so detailed and so pretty! Inspiration for us all who love sewing!
Thank you very much Mel! 😊 I think my grandmother is very proud (she’s the long-time sewer in my family)
@@VBirchwood That's so cool to hear! I learned to sew one day in an elementary school activity.
My great aunt taught me to crochet. I love making doilies. 😊🌹
So gorgeous, and the silk is yummy lol. This is a very impressive project!
Thanks so much Reina! I took a chance on the silk not really knowing what it'd be like in real life, but it was a pleasant surprise! 😊
Absolutely delightful outfit!
Congratulations on getting it all done so well!
Your filming and editing are consistently smooth & lovely. The reveal/outro is breathtakingly beautiful!
Might you consider, please, posting a photo of one of the buttons on TH-cam as well? (Unless of course nobody else is curious, but not on Instagram)
I appreciate the effort you put into clear speech.
Thanks so much Catherine! The next garment construction video I'll be posting pairs up with the base layers of the Berry Dress actually, so I'll definitely be sure to show off the buttons here then 😊
@@VBirchwood I, the curious,thank you😁
It always amazes me that you've only been sewing for such a short amount of time. This outfit is exquisite and its been fun following along! I can't wait to see what you do in 2022!
Thanks so much Sara! Wishing you a happy 2022 😊
Funny how you made an autumnal-coloured suit in the spring earlier this year, and have now completed a summer-themed ensemble... in the winter 😂
Anyway. Your patience, dedication and creativity are deeply inspiring, and I hope this channel will be around for many more years 🤗
Hahahaha my seasons are all flipped around 😂 at least it’s in line with the Southern Hemisphere I suppose!
Thanks so much Alicia 😊
I love this outfit, especially the colors. Great work.
Thank you Michelle! 😊
Can’t believe you sewed this all by hand. And are self-taught. You’re so impressive! Love watching your videos, even though I don’t wear historical fashion, I am a history fan and love all the fashion and accessories. Also, I think it’s pronounced “grow-grain” (the S is silent) , no shade we are always learning, and maybe this is pronounced differently around the world
WOW ! BRAVO ! Insane progress for such a short period of time ! You should be VERY proud of yourself !
Thank you very much Margaret! I'm feeling very proud today (though tired 😊)
This looks magnificent, V! All the contrasting colours turned out so beautiful and the attention to detail is amazing. Following your berry dress journey has been super helpful as well, as I am currently making my first dress from the same-ish period (it's from a pattern for 1840 to 1860s wrapper dress), also fully by hand :)
Thanks so much Gildedgitta! Oooo that sounds like a very fun project! Send me an email or DM on Instagram if you need any help or support 😊Happy sewing!

Oh my, this is how I wish women would dress today, I know it’s old fashioned to say, but I do. You are extremely skilful and the dress is beautiful, and if I may, so are you wearing it.
I personally don’t feel I’d enjoy dressing like this if I didn’t have the choice to. And so I think being able to choose what we want to wear is the most important because then it allows us to empower ourselves with clothing that makes us feel authentic etc. Thanks for the compliments!

That is really beautiful. I absolutely love the vivid colors and the way they contrast and compliment each other!
Thank you! 😊
Wow! It's amazing! Glad to hear you learned new things, too! That's what I love about this, creating a garment and learning new techniques
Thank you Fiona! Absolutely, each new garment presents new opportunities for learning fresh techniques, especially during the first few years of sewing where things are a lot more novice.
Stunning project and the reveal was such a beautiful "story". As someone who also has sensory issues I appreciate the little tips you include for why certain decisions assist you with that. Happy New Year!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊 Happy New Year!
What a perfect way to end the year! This project has been so fun to follow, and it honestly suprised me many times. I never doubted your abilities in the slightest, but the end result is more stunning than I could have imagined. You're so talented and creative, not just with sewing, but filming and editing as well. Following your growth over the year has been a joy and here's to hoping the new year will bring lots of new ideas and projects to fruition.
Awww thank you so much Maia! I really appreciate your words so much. Can you believe the channel wi be 1 year old on the 21st of January? It feels both like an incredibly long time and short time. The end result is stunning and you can really see the dedication and time put in to it!
Thank you Watson Melon! 😊
It's so beautiful and the little details are so fun! And I can't believe you sewed the entire thing by hand, too.
Thank you Judy! I'm so scared of electric sewing machines (they're loud!), and I just find hand sewing so much more relaxing. Plus it's kind of fun to test one's patience 😂
Absolutely stunning! You have done a wonderful job and I look forward to more. The fact you have used just a needle and thread, time, perseverance, and patience to make such art reminds us of the importance of taking time to create beauty in our world.
Thanks so much Naomi! ❤️ It's definitely important to remember to create art and things that bring us joy 😊
I guess I started at the end of this story. I’ll have to go back and learn the rest, because I love this ensemble! The colors are beautiful inside and out!
Thank you so much!! I hope you enjoy watching the entire series 🥰
Just wow...wow so pretty wow all your own hand sewing wow wow love the colours wow you did that yourself. Amazing 💗
Thank you so much 😊
Great work❤❤
BEAUTIFUL work!
This is just stunning! What a glorious achievement! I can't really express myself better than Jae Kent has already! And your cinematography is rather wonderful too! When you wear your silks do you get especially careful with how you hold yourself? Or do you just act normally? Also, how do you find silk to wear? I've heard it's not especially breathable.
Thank you Sarah!! 💕 I think I treat silk like any other fabric, but that’s also because I find deadstock silk for around £12 a metre (AmoThreads!) so it ends up being about the price of any other fabric like wool or linen. Because of that I think I’m less afraid to get it dirty haha. Lightweight silks are comfortable in summer, but silk taffeta is more appropriate for under 16-18 degree days I’d say. So most of the year for us in the U.K. 😄
This looks fantastic. It was great to follow along on this wonderful journey and the reveal was amazing. You look like you just stepped out of the period
Thanks so much Katarína! 😊
So interesting and the bodice looks absolutely beautiful- a phenomenal job xx

All the very best of the new year. And, agreed, it's a little frightening at how fast it arrived this time around. Sigh. We live in interesting time. In the meantime, Cheers. We'll at least be muddling through it all in clothing that fits and makes us all look spectacular.

Thanks so much Susie! And thanks for the grosgrain pronunciation note 😊 I'll be sure to use it for future videos!
I personally find so authentic and lovely the way Vasi pronounces certain words: "grosgrein" (which I would pronounce the same way despite knowing that comes from the french and it actually sounds like xD) or "silèsia" (which would be my natural form too instead of the "sailija" i hear so often).
I am not at all intending to make an argument out of my purposefully feigned ignorance, and I agree that accurate wording and pronunciation are always preferable (though less genuine ^^)
@@slaithwaiteseamstress7122 Of course, there is nothing wrong with pronouncing it differently. I always feel bad about correcting pronunciation; I don’t want to seem judgmental. I just know that if I were making a video, I would want to know. ❤️
@@susiecarson You didn't seem judgmental at all to me! 😊Please don't feel bad, correcting is never a bad thing (on the contrary, it shows care and interest) and there's always an assertive/sensitive way to approach it :) I hope my observation did not offend you! ♥

Wow Vasi, that turned out so beautifully. Absolutely gorgeous😍 that is definitely something to be proud of. I just love the way the swiss waist accents everything. I'm going to get that pattern after I finish paying my bills and mortgage. After seeing the way it just complements the whole ensemble in have a couple of ideas of what I want to do with it. I really love the place collar you chose to go with the bodice it just completes the look perfectly. Might I suggest a thimble for your finger since you do so much hand sewing. It might help save your finger. I never uses one myself until recently and it totally helps. I have whip stitched many skirt hems since and it don't kill my finger in the process. Anyways congratulations on finishing the berry dress. Just an time for the new year. Hopefully 2022 will bring some sort of sense of sanity back to the world and things will mellow out and not be another repeat of the last two years. Wishing you a happy and safe New Year ❤️
Thank you very much DesertRose! 💕 Definitely make the Swiss waist, it's such a nice accessory to have and very versatile. I am actually using a thimble in most of the video, just a few shots where I went from pinning to sewing and forgot to put the thimble back on, whoops 😅 I mainly just have a tendency to push the needle through with the thimble when it's a struggle to get it through without one, so it's kind of there when I need it ready to go 😊 Wishing you a safe and prosperous New Year!!
Lovely! Will make a note to go back to see the journey. Tip grosgrain has a silent s . 😉🇨🇦
Hope you enjoy the series! A few other people mentioned this as well when I first posted the video 5-6 months ago, so I pronounce it differently now 😂

The dress looks stunning on you. Well worth every stitch. Excellent boning technique. Nice videography throughout.
I'm so glad you didn't slip and fall on the muddy bank. How did you get the boots clean again ?
Thank you so much! The muddy bank wasn't too slippery thankfully, just messy. I used a damp cloth and also waited for the mud to dry a bit to flake most of it off 😊 They're all clean now!
It seems more 1830’s to me maybe because of the length of the dress
I can understand that! Shorter 1860s dresses though did exist. I’ve seen a number of extant photographs
@@VBirchwood anyway it is as pretty as a picture

The dress is lovely. I love the colors. Also, I should like to respectfully correct your pronunciation of the word "grosgrain". It's a common word to mispronounce as it is a borrowed word from the 19th century French word, "grogram" meaning "coarse grain". (How it got applied to a textile is beyond me. Maybe the texture of the weave of the ribbon reminded people of coarse ground grain.) Grosgrain is pronounced grow-grain not gross-grain. I understand how one can mispronounce the word as I used to say gross-grain until I was corrected. And occasionally my brain wants to mispronounce it in spite of knowing the correct pronunciation.
Thank you! 😊 and thanks for the correction on the word! I’ve started working to say it mentally as grow-grain now 😉
It’s beautiful! Where can I get the pattern please?
How can someone make skirt big without crinoline??
This has a small crinoline underneath, but I’d recommend cartridge pleating, using a layer of cotton organdie for a stiffening lining, and also layering with multiple petticoats underneath. If you look at my video making the skirt of this ensemble, I used similar techniques there.
Look gorgeous! Where are the boots from? 😍
Thank you 😊 They are American Duchess but I bought them secondhand from someone who bought them years ago, so I believe they have been discontinued unfortunately!
