    This is quite helpful. Thank you. So if I didn't want to delete the white margins, I would just need to choose white paper so it wouldn't show up, correct? Thanks!

    • @StevePeel
      @StevePeel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, in theory yes, you could leave the white borders. I have done this with success. But, it’s always important to order a copy as soon as the book is published so that you get to review it within just a couple of days. If you order a proof copy it would usually take much longer.
      That way you can quickly make any alterations you need if you need to. It’s also important to click the Flatten box when downloading the PDF Print. You can see the option in the download settings. This will reduce shadow or outline of objects.

    • @StevePeel
      @StevePeel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wherever your book has a gutter, that is the same gutter margin, and all the other margins remain the same as in the video. If your book opens from the top like a lift-up cover such as a calendar, then both left and right margins can be the same as the right margin in the video. You will only have one gutter margin, no matter which angle your book opens.

    Okay, so I bought Canva today. Now its confusing the heck out of me, especially since going to Amazon. How do we use the templates you gave us? Gee you must think I am thick as 2 twigs. I do not know where to save the template, and I cant use it as there is just a white page, with two long lines and nothing to click to begin.

    • @StevePeel
      @StevePeel  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      :) It's okay if you are looking at pages with lines on either side. They are the margins set out for your book. It's up to you to fill the gap between the lines with whatever you want in the book. I suggest going back over the videos on creating margins, as it show what to do with them too.
      Steve

    Hi Stephen, I just test a cookbook with images for paperback on kdp, and the printing price was scary, what do you suggest I should do? Should reduce the no of images, or get some kind of formating

    • @StevePeel
      @StevePeel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, the price of colour is high. But, I find people are prepared to pay a premium for a premium product.
      Me personally, I stick to premium colour, but I keep the pages at between 90 and 110 pages at 8.5 x 11”. My royalties for a book like that would around $2.50.
      Reducing the number of images will not make any difference. Steve

  • @wildanilsson

    Great video! When I did my book, Amazon required me to add an additional .125 outside my 6*9 format. Did you need that with yours? I already had the margins in the file...

    • @StevePeel
      @StevePeel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Wilda, you caught me at the computer. The only times I have been required to add bleed to a 6x9 manuscript (0.125 on the width / 0.250 on the height) is when I have gone outside the margins designed for no-bleed. I might have gone outside with an image on the inside title page or in other parts of the book, signalling Amazon to issue the rejection. Steve

    • @wildanilsson
      @wildanilsson 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@StevePeel Thanks! My book is with bleed because of photos but I dont get how to adjust the page width to accomodate for the gutter being different on right hand vs left hand page. Or would it suffice to increase "the gutter box" with 0.125 inches? Thanks again 🙏😍

    • @StevePeel
      @StevePeel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately it’s the page size as whole that requires resizing, top and bottom. You could try just adjusting the bottom and see what happens, but I would be surprised. Steve

  • @chefzaycooks5793
    @chefzaycooks5793 ปีที่แล้ว

    i have gone back several times to adjust the font to fit inside the margins but when I upload the manuscript, I keep getting the same error about text being outside of the margins and the gutters being incorrect. what could cause that? could u glance at my pdf file and tell me the problem please

    • @StevePeel
      @StevePeel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on how thick your book is, depends on how wide the margins need to be. First, view your book in the Previewer, so launch Previewer and flick through the pages. If your text touches the dotted lines, you need to adjust your borders to compensate. The previewer is the best judge of that. If you have done that, and all looks good, send me a compressed copy of your PDF so I can receive it in an email. I will delete it once I have viewed it. Steve. stevejohnpeel@yahoo.co.uk

    • @StevePeel
      @StevePeel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. The “white area” - or the area inside the new margins - is the area you need to centre graphics, chapter titles, headings and even page numbers if you want them centred. The “white area” is your canvas 🤙

    Hi Stephen this is such an excellent video - thank you so much - I have a question maybe you can help with. I'm joining my PDFs but because my book has many photos, the pdf's are too large to upload to the joiner - how do I get around this?

    • @StevePeel
      @StevePeel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lynette and thank you. This is often a problem when joining large file-sized PDFs, especially free online apps. It would help if you didn’t compress your PDF to do this, as quality will be lost, as you seem to be already aware of. Breaking the PDF files down to even smaller ones doesn't help either, because the result is a large file many apps can't handle.
      I use ilovepdf.com, which you can use for free within reason online, so that might be worth a try. I have the full version of that app.
      pdfmodifiy.com claims to be able to join large PDFs for free, but I haven't tried it.
      Just out of curiosity, as a result of your message, I attempted to join two copies of one of my books in iLovePDF free. Each consisted of 220 pages, including 70 colour photographs. The file downloaded quickly and perfectly. So that was 440 pages and 140 photos. Unfortunately, that was the maximum I could upload in the free version, as it states it has a limit of 100MB per task, which is strange that it let me upload 112MB. In the full version of iLovePdf, users can process up to 4GB per task, it states, so I tried it.
      I uploaded 5 copies of the book into the full version on my computer, and it merged them in seconds. So that was 1100 pages and 350 photographs.
      I'm not trying to sell you iLovePDF, and I am not affiliated with it in any way, but in future, if you are looking for a new PDF reader and editor, you can't go wrong with it. That said, in the meantime, I can suggest that you keep searching and trying the free online PDF mergers until you find one that works and retains the high quality of your images.
      Steve

      Yes that’s true, however, some would find it harder to set, header and footer, gutter and outside margin, numbering stop, then the alternate page and so on, all using guides and ruler. I supposed it’s whatever suits.
