    Hello Janice I am one of your French viewers and I enjoyed the chat. I put a comment on one of your earlier vlogs and it might not have come through. I suggested you try to get involved in local activities, meet local people and practice your French. Generally the town halls have lists of local associations (It might be called "Fontainebleau accueil") you might want to become member of , according to your affinities and areas of interest. If you like outdoors, the forest around Fontainebleau is huge and great for gentle hiking, cycling if it is of any interest for you. With the warmer season, there is quite a lot to see in the département de Seine et Marne where you are : the chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte of course, the town of Meaux the chateau de Courances, Blandy les Tours, the banks of the Seine around Thomery, Moret sur Loing, the Jean Cocteau village of Milly la Forêt, which has a small antique sale on the first sunday of the month starting in March.

      Thank you so much for all the suggestions because I am not really sure what is around here. I mean I know what is around here but you know what I mean I’ve not really had a chance to experience what is around here due to the weather. We had about six days of great weather and I had a friend come in to see me so of course that friend wanted to see all of the touristy things that I’ve already seen 5000 times but anyway I am really looking forward to experiencing getting to know my area a little bit better. I don’t hang out with Americans number one that doesn’t interest me at all and I don’t mean that in a bad way but I try to volunteer and there’s so much French around me and then there’s a lot of British around me so most people speak in French sorry most people speak in English. Where I volunteered for the Ukraine people for all the items to go to Poland they all spoke English my stylist speaks French and she’s trying to learn English for me so it’s just fun just really really fun. Now I need some cooperation from the weather. Currently it’s like 42° and raining

    Janice, thank you for doing these videos. I am 73, recently widowed and planning another trip to France. Your videos are fun, educational and positive. To the rude Americans commenting on WWII, I would ask them to visit the American cemeteries of both wars and thank the French men and woman who lovingly and respectively care for those properties.

    When moving to most places, it’s okay to not know the language fluently, but you should have some basics AND a consistent learning schedule. Having an active language learning schedule is key to having a full, less frustrating experience. I love that you’re open to taking adventures, jumping in with both feet. It’s very inspirational for folks of all ages.
    Some people are weird to think they can come to your house and be their tour guide. Best of luck on your journey and thanks for sharing, Janice.

    For me I've noticed while traveling to other countries, that there are "vacationers" and "travelers", the latter being the people that take time to learn about the culture and immerse themselves in the local customs. We have been fortunate enough to be able to spend "slow" time in Italy, Paris, Spain, Greece, Mexico and Turkey. We are Americans and I have at times been embarrassed by fellow Americans behavior in other countries, I understand what you are meaning and took no offense. I wish I could learn languages easily, but I have a hearing problem and it's almost impossible for me. I do learn some words and use them, but then if someone speaks to me in their language, I can't understand them. It's been a struggle at times when we travel, but I do notice that if we just try and use a translator app when really needed we do just fine. We've gotten lost and found our way, we've been in small villages and managed to communicate when no one spoke English (except us), it has a lot to do with attitude, stay open and positive, be kind and patient and that is usually what you will receive in return. Janice you are an inspiration and I admire you for taking this leap and living your best life. And you look marvelous too! I can tell you really care about your health, I will be turning 60 in October and I am inspired by you to stay healthy and not give up on knowing that there are many years ahead for me to live my life in joy.

    Hi Janice, so happy to have discovered your channel! I like it for a few different reasons. First of course because I love Paris. My husband and I didn’t visit Paris until I was 60 and he was 65. We went twice in one year and then we went back another time. He passed away at 71 in September and oh am I glad that we did that. We both loved it! Second, I love what you’re doing at the young senior age of 70. It’s inspiring and you’re my kind of woman! I also get how much fun it is to look as French as possible while you’re there. It’s definitely nothing against the US. We would get tickled when people mistook took us to be from Paris. I am interested in starting a channel and I would love the media kit from Hannah. Again thank you for being you!

Thank you very very much for your kind words and they were very inspiring to me. I’m sorry for your loss of your husband. I too am a widow of almost 10 years. I traveled with my has been quite a bit and one of the places he absolutely hated with France. Go figure!

    I just started watching your videos. I want to thank you for being such an inspiration. I’ve always wanted to move to France ever since I can remember. It all started with Louis XIV and all the beautiful furniture in elementary school. Anyway I’m retired and and I’m 64 and was starting to think it was way too late for me to keep that dream going so I was starting to give up on ever moving there until I saw your first video this morning. I’ve watched several of them
    Throughout the day. Very informative and I totally appreciate all your efforts. I subscribed and I try to remember to like your videos before going on to the next one. I wish you the best. And by the way, I would have never thought you were 70. I thought you were younger than me. Keep up the good work. You may see me in France some day.

I am somewhat relieved about your caution today, concerning travellers staying with you personally or feeling as though they can ask you to be someone’s tour guide. I think you handled it very well. Your personal style truly allows people to feel so comfortable with you that I can see some may feel they could ask you to accommodate such favours. Excellent job. Hi Janice, you are so inspiring. I daydream about retiring to France - Paris especially. After visiting I’m enamored and can’t wait to return. I’m 55 and finishing a battle with cancer (yay!) and you inspire me - you’re so active and healthy and able to follow your dreams. We love our home and it’s daunting, but I do dream of moving to France for a myriad of reasons. My son lives in Hungary. If I could get my daughter to move, my husband and I would sell and go!

    • @JaniceInFrance
      @JaniceInFrance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I don’t know how old your daughter is but I guarantee you had I done this years ago I would’ve just upped her and taken her and listen to her bitch and moan and groan for about 34 months but then she would’ve gotten used to it. But at that time I didn’t have a pension or retirement so I couldn’t have moved because I didn’t have any money coming in so I guess it was just as well that I waited when I waited. Leslie what kind of cancer did you have if you don’t mind and if you don’t want to put it here on the comments you can always email me. I’ve battled breast cancer in 2010 unfortunately did not have to have chemo only had a radiation. I hope you’re doing well and if you ever just want to talk about how you feel about this cancer thing. Please feel free to email me

Kindness and manners go a long way in France even if you don't speak the language. I got my large American suitcase stuck in a turnstile in the subway and a lovely young Paris youth came by and rammed it through. It is one of my favorite memories. I like your content because you are not a 20 something youth with a backpack but provide really good practical advice.

    I enjoy your videos! I chimed in on an earlier episode as I found you because my daughter will be going to the American University in Paris for her masters degree next year and I needed to know what it will be like for her to be all "Emily in Paris"..... I really hope that she is more like Janice in France....🤣 She has 2 degrees French and Law. I am grateful that the school has many resources for her. Covid screwed up her semester abroad during her undergrad - her older sister was able to do a semester in Japan which was life changing. 2 of my favorite place in France are Fontainebleau and Vaux le Vicomte - I hope that you have the opportunity to visit this chateau as it was the blue print for Versailles and share it with all of your viewers. Cheers!

    Been following your channel for a little while and love it, you are so inspiring. Many of us have the dream of packing our bags and moving to another country but you actually did, and not everybody does or is able to. I can't get over how rude some people can be, or that line about WW2. I'm almost offended as I had a German grandmother whose family survived WW2. I have come to realise that there are just as many good people as bad people and it doesn't matter where you come from or what colour your skin is. And there's that saying if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything. Greetings from Australia.

    I have to say this is one of my favorite videos. I think this is a nice format... just a chat with the women friends. BUT that said, I am glad you were pretty clear about your boundaries, because I think some folks out here might take it more literally. There is another young woman who lives in Paris and she has a TH-cam channel, and she did mention arranging a Meet and Greet, but... in very public spaces. But, such face to face meetings I think are better kept private and to natural friendships that arise, either in person or online. So, good for you for setting boundaries and pfft to any of those rude comments. And hurra, thank you!! As an American living abroad, thank you for speaking out about American rudeness abroad and for the personal losses and destruction that has happened in the two world wars fought here, and the need for respect. We expect guests in our American homes to be respectful of ourselves and our homes, yes? So it is natural that those we are visiting also deserve the same. I don't know why that gets forgotten, but thank you for reminding us. It is a lovely thing to be American, and even nicer to be proud when ones fellow Americans behave in a way that is a credit to the American flag and our country and traditions. 😊💕

    I’ve just discovered you on you tube so catching up with all your news and views and I just love what you say and do . Full admiration to you for doing what you wanted to do . I’m 70 Janice and after retiring from civil service many friends thought I was mad to restart new career with a U.K. charity about a year after . I just couldn’t get on with retirement and lock down didn’t help did it lol. I’m really interested in your smoothies and how you make them sorry if you have already shown this I may come across it later. Meantime any advice on your obvious healthy choices of eating is interesting and motivating . Love your apartment too and your wonderful pets ! Hi Janice. Thank you for sharing your new adventure. I love Paris and I’ve being there many times, but can’t commit to live there, yet! Our goal was that when we retire (retired 8/2016), we would rent a small house for three to six months in southern France. Well, my 40-year old daughter who had been trying to have a baby, God blessed her and she got pregnant. To make a long story short, we’ve been helping her while she and her husband work (both doctors). Our granddaughter brought us so much joy. Since I was a career woman I didn’t get to raise my own daughters, this was an opportunity to do so. For now, we will continue to visit Paris and maybe soon (my granddaughter is in school now), we will fulfill our dream. Meanwhile, I will enjoy your videos. Again, thank you. You inspire me. By the way, I am 71 years old.

    Hello Janice, I thoroughly enjoy all your videos and I’m always looking forward to the next one! Please do not second-guess your decision to move to France because there is no time like the present to make our dreams come true, and as we get older, time is at a premium! I’m a little older than you and I have been to Paris three times for short visits, and I have become a total Francophile! I love the sound of the French language although I only know a few words, and I have never been one to learn a language easily, but I’m sure if I spent more time there, I would pick up a few basic words to help me get through the day. Whenever I’m stressed, I picture myself in Paris on a rainy day, walking with my umbrella near the Eiffel tower or enjoying a glass of wine under an awning on the Champs Élysées.
    Please know that I am wishing you much success in this new chapter of your life! Stay happy and healthy and continue to follow your heart!

    Janice, enjoyed your chat very much. Please don’t take this as a negative comment, but when when you stated people cannot stay with you - do you remember the video when you took us grocery shopping and on the street you pointed out the hotel across the street and you made the statement, “if you don’t want to stay with me, we can set you up there and you can have your own privacy.” I think that statement opened up the can of worms for people to be welcomed staying with you. I thought immediately, WOW she’s brave - that could be so dangerous. So now I’m glad to see you’ve set your boundaries.

Though I completely understand and agree with you separating youtube and your life, I would do the same. You have to be careful and protect yourself.
      Another investment opportunity which is in France that doesn’t exist in the US is a Viaget (vee-ah-zjay). This is someone that is older that allows someone to buy their home over time, either while they still live in it or while it is free or unlived in. It’s best for people that have time to wait for their investment to “mature”. It could be something great for your daughter! In most cases it’s a win-win for the retiree/owner and for the investor. You might check into it just to see if it’s for you and your daughter. My husband and I have been on the lookout for an unlived in one (they call it “open/libre”) so we can immediately start using it as a b&b or airbnb, then it practically pays for itself hopefully. It is fine to arrive in a country knowing nothing of the language. I moved to Japan without knowing Japanese. It is easier to learn the language correctly once you are in the country. It takes a lot of studying for years to master a language so the important thing is to keep working at it. Watch TH-cam videos about the language and in the language. Read the newspaper with a dictionary. Keep a notebook and have sections for words and phrases as you learn them and for words you don't know and need to look up. Study your notes on vocabulary, expressions and write them over and over to facilitate remembering them. Listen to the radio and watch TV. Watch the same French movies with English subtitles over and over until you no longer need the subtitles. Study grammar. Take classes. Find a private teacher. Practice writing and have your teacher correct it and study those corrections. Try to make small talk. Do language exchange with a French person. Get involved in a French group that shares your interests. Read children's books. I spent about six hours a day studying Japanese and never got good at it but never lost interest. Imagine if you could not look things up in a dictionary and the writing was not in Roman characters. You're lucky in that regard. Study study study. Have someone help you with your pronunciation. Immerse yourself in this for awhile and enjoy learning to be able to function better in your new home. Some people are lucky enough to be able to listen and imitate and learn a language easily. The rest of us need to work at it. You've got the time so I hope you have the desire and the discipline to keep studying. The payoff will be there.

    Janice, such a great video! Learning the language is so important, it will open more doors for you, as well as bring new and exciting friends into your life. The American Viscountess channel is by a lovely gal who married into the English Aristocracy, she shared in a recent video how she has learned to speak Italian. Excellent tips and tools on how to learn a new language. I hope it is helpful. ☺️

    You are a wondrous bonne vivante :-) I simply adore your sense of etiquette. Truly you can't go wrong if you are polite and respectful, and a lesson worth teaching. Maybe there is a book in it for you? The American in Paris' guide to etiquette in France :-) The fabulous thing about living any where 'different' is the always learning something new. There isn't a day that doesn't go by that I don't learn something about my adopted home. It could be anything - language, culture, admin... (Lord save me from French admin!). Keep well, you and yours.

      Oh I know the French admin I’ve heard can be a real head Turner. Since I’m on a temporary residency I have not had to deal with that yet but hopefully I will get to deal with that next year and I will have enough friends that I can say someone please come with me lol thank you for that bonne vivante! @@JaniceInFrance Oh my Janice, French admin applies to everything that involves any form or paper (real or electronic). Bank accounts, health card, insurance, utilities, rental agreements (if not AirBNB). When we opened our bank account here 10 years ago they literally felled a tree to provide us with an inch thick, twice over (as there were 2 of us on the account we obviously had to have 2 copies, though we lived at the same address) plus! the bank's own copy of the contract. Which we had to initial each page of each copy. Since then the bank has moved more online. Yeah! :-)

      @JaniceInFrance  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pumpjackpiddlewick I know I went the other day to open up an account and the girl told me that they don’t like opening accounts to people that don’t speak French because I could be signing some thing and then come back and tell them that I didn’t know what I was doing because it was another language so in all honesty I don’t really need an account I just kind of wanted one to show that I had an account when I go back and reapply for my long-term visa so needless to say I don’t have one but who knows I may get one before I go back in October. If you have any ideas or tips or tricks about getting an account, I could certainly use them

    • @pumpjackpiddlewick
      @pumpjackpiddlewick 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JaniceInFrance If you have a friend or make an acquaintance that is willing to go with you to the bank I highly recommend it. Yes, the bank is right, it is important to know what you are signing - as there is a lot to sign. There are fees to understand, limits, etc. Banking in France is much more rigorously controlled than in the US. (Debt, or even allowed debt such as credit cards, for one is not even close to the same level here as in the US. There are even monthly spending limits, even if you have a lot of money, and also depends on how you spend - online, cash withdrawal, bank transfers.) So truly helpful to have someone willing to explain as you go through the pages of paperwork.
      Something to be aware of is that many banks outside of the US do not wish to open accounts for Americans. And this is very true in France. This is due to the US tax system, or something called FATCA (have a google of this to see more detail). You have to declare to the IRS even if you live permanently in France, even if you pay taxes here, courtesy of being an American citizen. The Bank is required to supply papers to the IRS *in English* notifying them that they have an American account holder, or if they open an account for you. As you can imagine, this could be a very real headache for them, especially if none of their staff speaks English. Some will simply say they can't open an account for you, others might be nicer about how they say it - like 'because you can't speak/read French...'. So, going to the bank with someone who speaks French, to open an account, is your best option, in case they have to help you fight your corner.
      If you are planning to stay indefinitely, or a very long time, do try to get a bank account. Without it there will be more headaches. Having one will open doors for you. So worth the effort. Good luck. And feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
