it can actually be read as self projection, that he tried to make himself out to be a monster, both in his and others eyes, cause that is how he feels about himself.
@@chriswihuluI like that idea. He chose not to object to his father forcing him to sgo abroad, and then stayed away longer than expected and now he has tremendous feelings of guilt. Could be read both as life taking an unfortunate path for both of them but also that he in the end chose to go and ultimatly stay away even if he now regrets it.
@@Alexander-kc8oq Well, he didn’t really study abroad. Anime misinterpreted the events. What really happened was that his father, who was his superior, told him to go on a military campaign. And we all know what happens if a military officer disobeys direct orders from the higher ups. So really, he had no choice in the matter.
The thing is that the source material included a lot of subtle hints that it is effectively impossible for a courtesan to be either assaulted or to become pregnant against her wishes at a high ranking brothel. There are security systems in place against both. The anime cut a good part of these to keep up the pacing which means that you have to really pay attention to get the hints that remain that things were not what they seemed.
Spoiler answer Because the granny did not want him seeing her . She kept him away from her . She didn’t trust him because her pregnancy almost destroyed her business. & left with no word from him , so she thought he knocked her up and abandoned her.
1:28 Call me immature but I just can’t get over both of them being like “I want to play Go/Chess.” Like was it THAT bad or are they just that obsessed. Either way I’m petty and laughed. Edit = spelling mistake. I wrote “I’m PRETTY and laughed” instead of “I’m PETTY and laughed.”
It isn't in this scene, but could anyone explain what the fingers that Lakan received meant? Was that her announcing her sickness? Or pregnancy, since she sent Maomao's too? I get the general feeling but I was wondering about the exact signification. There was so much information to be read between the lines in this episode, I feel like I couldn't follow it all😭 Absolutely loved the episode though!!!
In extreme measures, courtesans would cut off their fingers as an act of love. Some would even commit suicide with their lovers if they can't be together.
You know how people would make promises to each other through a pinkie swear? I think there’s also the tradition of lovers pinkies being connected by a red string of fate. The night they slept together, they made a promise. although he didn’t get the hint that she wanted to lower her price for him and was pregnant and waiting for him to buy her out. Basically, by sending him her severed pinkie finger, she was cursing him for breaking their promise to be together. It also alludes to a lovers suicide.
honestly she got both from both. She has her mother's beauty with her father's cat (or fox) like behaviour, and she got her mother's cunning with her father's analytical mind.

OK I take back the very bad things I said earlier about Lakan like traitor should be poisoned. I was mislead by his cutscenes where he appeared cold blooded, and Maomao’s death gazes whatever. 💀 He is an autistic savant, but he’s also a fool, a self centered dead beat Dad who abandoned Fengxian for 3 years, never answered her mail or attempted to contact her; she lost her favored status because she bore his child, was abused, got the clap, and went insane; Maomao lost her mom, and lived a life of hardship.
Aban-he was literally sent off for military duties by his father, who was his superior _and_ someone who hated him. Do you know what happens if you don’t answer a summon for military duties?
I mean, it looks more like his only mistake was conceiving Maomao; everything else was just bad circumstances. Lakan didn't want to be gone as long as he was - didn't even want to go in the first place, and the letters Fengxian sent him don't appear to have been forwarded. So to the brothel staff it looked like he just ruined her and then walked away. I wonder if he even knows Fengxian is still alive... all we were shown in that he got sent her fingers. It'd be even more tragic if he assumed she was dead and that's why he never bought her out after returning. Meanwhile Maomao was raised on the narrative that he's the worst and was actively kept from him. I have to wonder why Luomen didn't sort that mess out.
@@Narifamenhonestly I still wonder why luomen didn't try to build up a relationship between maomao and her father unless he was of the opinion that being raised by himself was the better option
@@Moocow2003he probably didn't want her to be used and wanted Mao Mao to grow up independent. Her mom was used as a courtesan with no actual self autonomy. Lakan is part of an Imperial system, and he would have raised Mao Mao to play politics or even enter the rear palace as a courtesan.
Considering that his only form of entertainment and his passion at the time was playing go and shogi…they bonded over interests. That’s a pretty common way how love starts.
@@kziila0244 It wasn't taken as criticism, but why do you feel the need to "explain" their love to an obvious joke? Again, this is my experience in the discussion around this show. No matter what, people feel the need to come in and "explain" or "correct" people. Even if it's a joke. Even if the people barely know more than the basics of the stuff they are discussing. It's weird, because I have not seen it anywhere else.
Considering the "bet" that was made at the beginning, her saying she wants to play another game of Go, which she was better than him at, was another way of saying she wanted some more of that joystick
Unrelated but can somebody explain how Paul who at first avoids heading south because of his vision where there are lots of people suffering and dying after he gains control immediately went full Lisan al gaib and go on war for revenge and control? It's supposed to happen over a longer period but after drinking the water of life he sees all possible paths and realizes him being the chosen one was the best path. He couldn't be reluctant anymore and had to embrace the role.

I assumed from Lakans conversations with Jinshi that MaoMao was potneitally a product of r*** and that is what forced her mother to take on customers and caused MaoMaos resentment of him. This gives a more intersting depth to Lakans character though.
it can actually be read as self projection, that he tried to make himself out to be a monster, both in his and others eyes, cause that is how he feels about himself.
@@Alexander-kc8oq
Well, he didn’t really study abroad.
@@kziila0244Thats a really weird thing to manage to misrepresent.
Tragedy. Another element of great storytelling. I love this anime. Season 2!!
Awesome The Apothecary Diaries Video.
I don't get why didn't Lakan buy out Fengxian after he returned 3 years later
Spoiler answer
Because the granny did not want him seeing her .
She kept him away from her .
She didn’t trust him because her pregnancy almost destroyed her business.
& left with no word from him , so she thought he knocked her up and abandoned her.
He does not even know that she is alive. The anime cut a few things in its explanation and the translation did not help either.
It was also Fengxian's request To granny that he should not see her.
The writers were good, make me think Lakan was evil, and a crazy villain..🤦🏽♀️they did a really good job😂😅
Does anyone know the name of that lullaby? I love listening to it.
@@g.d.2059 @samspotz8r8s Wow I had no idea, thank you for explaining! I understand everyone's reactions much better now
If this took place in modern times
Fengxian: I want to play Nintendo
Lakan: I was thinking of playing Sega
She took a gamble and didn't communicate and ended up paying the price
Now my only goal is to ruin my lover's life then run away and regret it all my life
Fantastic series with good story.
And that how her parents met and were she was convinced
Me, discovering Lakan wasn’t a grapeist s**tbag after all: “Perhaps I treated you too harshly.”
The Alternative title for this is "How I met your Mother"
Those who knows the plot-😢
Those seeing first time - 👀😏
So glad this didn't turn out how they were making it at first! Still bittersweet but at least it wasn't THAT!
This backstory is so sad…
what I dont understand is, why did lakan said that she made her price go down?
Because she wanted Lakan to buy her out because she loved him.
Therefore sleeping with him.
So Maomao inherited her Mother's beauty and her father's smarts.
Dunno why people keep saying this like her mother was a half-wit only good for her looks. Did people already forget she kept beating Lakan in games?
More like her mother looks and her fathers eyes. Both of her parents were intelligent
@@sapphyrusBoth are smart. She beat him in Go while he beat her chess.
honestly she got both from both. She has her mother's beauty with her father's cat (or fox) like behaviour, and she got her mother's cunning with her father's analytical mind.
I just want them to be happy 😭
Can someone explain everything ?? I tried to undersand where it did go wrong 😭😭(also its because my englsih isn't very good ;-;)
What is on that maid's head?
morale of the story, don't take advice from someone who looks like a boardgame piece
I love Anime
I’m way behind on new anime again
Okay, but who won that game of Go?
She did. Lakan never wins at Go
Idk what’s happening but is that a lady with a sign for a head?
The guy telling the story can’t recognize faces so he sees everyone as shogi/go pieces, until he met this woman who he can recognize
Ngl black was gonna win in the GO game I saw his gameplay😂
Edit:I am actually talking about the gameplay no joke I wasn't talking about bro rizzing her up with his game he won the game of GO and you could also say he won her heart also........my nerdiness kicked in that why I'm probably still single😂
buddy, I don't think a single person in this world asked... I'm with you on that though, I know only the basics and yes, I too, am single.
this is also how I was conceived
Gee i wonder 🤔
I wanna know the lubally nameeee
An actual tragedy.
Superhero origin story
I may have missed this, but what was Fengxian's illness? Was this explained in the episode?
Syphilis (caught after this scene, when she had to start taking dubious customers to make enough money to survive)
Anyone going to ask why meimei has a lollipop head?
It makes sense in the episode. Lakan has face blindness and later in life he started viewing people as game pieces he can use in his plans. It does kinda look goofy though
With people that aren't important to him, he is able to distinguish between men and women, by seeing them as Black and White Go stones, respectively.
Where Luffy tho ?
Nice🎉🎉🎉
They skipped the good part
The show literlly gaslights you into hating him. And it makes some scense notnmake sense. Like why does Maomao seem to fear him the whole show and hide from him if he is actully a chill dude
Will be explained next episode, I think.
@@Narifamen
It will probably be explained in the next episode. The tale of this couple actually ends in a bittersweet note in the LN.

😢😢😢 sad past
How bad does the guy have to be if she only thinks about playing Go?
Considering that his only form of entertainment and his passion at the time was playing go and shogi…they bonded over interests. That’s a pretty common way how love starts.
@@kziila0244
I swear, people in the Apothecary discussions can't understand a joke. And I am not even sure why. The series is full of jokes.
@@Modie
It wasn’t a criticism towards you.
@@kziila0244
It wasn't taken as criticism, but why do you feel the need to "explain" their love to an obvious joke?
Like i get that he drinks the water of life and realize that he is a Harkonnen but don't understand why it changes his personality to such extreme dark turns.
It's supposed to happen over a longer period but after drinking the water of life he sees all possible paths and realizes him being the chosen one was the best path. He couldn't be reluctant anymore and had to embrace the role.
Hello there! :D
